NYE what do you all do?

And how old are your kids?

Before kids, we'd spend NYE with my dh's family but they live far away and my PIL are divorced now. Through the sleepless years, I didn't give much thought about NYE and we often ended up not celebrating but would have friends over on 1.1. for a long brunch board games etc.

Kids are all preteens and above now and I feel stuck for what to do.

So what do you all do? And do you enjoy it? I find it a bit hard to stay up past 11.30 😂

It’s Hogmanay for me, not NYE. I Clean the house to within an inch of its life as I don’t want to take last years dirt into the next year. Then we celebrate at the bells. On New Year’s Day no cleaning or laundry is fine as it washes away your luck and a life in that year. Superstition aside we just have a drink at the bells, I cry…all good!

TheChosenTwo · 30/10/2022 17:57

Every year for the last 20 years we have gone on a family holiday with dh and his siblings and their kids for the week after Christmas and over new year. It’s grown in numbers now as the nieces and nephews now have partners, some are married with their own dc, it’s the best week. So much food, lots of walks and pub lunches and then a big party on NYE, music, buffet, just a lot of laughing and relaxing. It’s my kids favourite holiday of the year, every year. The Covid New Year’s Eve was terribly flat for us!

Dogsgottabone · 30/10/2022 17:58

I sleep on the sofa while DH and teen DC insist on waiting up for the fireworks on TV. They make me wake up for the fireworks and I force a mouthful of something alcoholic into me and then beg to go to bed while everyone else watches Jools Holland.

Not what you were hoping for OP!

TheChosenTwo · 30/10/2022 17:58

Sorry, my dc are now 18.17 and 11!

Dogsgottabone · 30/10/2022 17:59

Oh and I take the tree down on NYD before anyone else gets up so it's clean and I can put some fresh flowers in a vase.

NotTooOldPaul · 30/10/2022 18:07

We’ve had two very different Hogmanay (New Year) experiences.
For a few years we went to a ceilidh in a local pub and danced into the next year.
We then decided to go away in our caravan and enjoyed the festivities in a town near the caravan site.
(My wife will never let me forget that over the 2018 to 2019 festivities I fell asleep and missed the lot).
This year we plan to go away in the caravan and enjoy a relaxing time away but we will go to the Main Street in the town and dance, watch the fireworks, shake hands with loads of strangers who will then be our friends.

My advice for the OP is do what you and your DH want to do and enjoy it as there will be loads more New Years to enjoy.

NameChangeForARaisin · 30/10/2022 18:08

We've tried to mix it up over the years but have always done something.

Ice skating at Somerset House
Followed by the Fireworks over the Thames.

Edinburgh, staying in hotel and catching train back.

Lake district, walked up to Castlerigg stone circle.

Peak District staying in a YHA castle.

Our fav was the "family party night" in a local hotel, which was full of people from the travelling community, it was an absolute blast! Best party ever.

Sometimes we just get tickets for the local rugby club.

SystemOfAFrowns · 30/10/2022 18:10

Fuck all

never really done ‘NYE’

Fairylightsongs · 30/10/2022 18:11

We always have a party with a group of friends, take it in turns to host. We did last year so someone else doing it this year. We do dinner, then basically drink and dance and have fun, stay up far too late, get up the next day, have a fry up,slob around, play games, a few gentle drinks then head home on the 2nd.

PinkRiceKrispies · 30/10/2022 18:12

Bed early and try to ignore the fireworks and also the envy that others actually celebrate the year gone and look forward to the next.

Mommabear20 · 30/10/2022 18:14

Sleep! 😂
Even pre-kids, it's not a big thing in our house. DH and I were always the ones that offered to work the late/early shifts at work so others could go out.

Yarrawonga · 30/10/2022 18:17

This year will be the local pub until the early hours.

Yup!
same here.
laundry basket has to be empty
open the door at midnight to let the old year out and the new year in.

plus chucking the stewing steak into the slow cooker, ready for the traditional NYD steak pie. Cos it’s not NYD if you don’t have steak pie, is it?

That all sounds fun! I'm definitely not the dancer drinker NYE type (would do this during other nights of he yer though).

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one to go to bed before midnight, but feel I need to up the ante.

icebearforpresident · 30/10/2022 18:24

Not much! We stay up and watch the fireworks and for the last couple of years have let the kids stay up if they want to as well (age 9 & 7). Husband and I have a few drinks and we do a ‘midnight feast’ for the kids (usually just Pringles and some munchies). Usually all in bed by quarter past midnight and hope we get a lie in the next day.

greenhousegal · 30/10/2022 18:26

I find it quite a sad night, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. Every time I hear "Happy New Year" I shiver, as someone we know dies every year really, and troubles don't disappear overnight. Getting hammered doesn't change anything, and it's just another boring flipping day and night. Next day is no different to the one before. I am not depressed, just a bit cynical now that I'm older I suppose.

I like to just go to bed and watch something good that I have saved to watch. + a shedload of chocolate. Now that's great!

Gingernaut · 30/10/2022 18:27

Depending on my shift pattern, I either work or sleep.

Living to work atm...

SocksAndTheCity · 30/10/2022 18:29

I've never really bothered and normally go to bed early after a big dinner and maybe the cinema, but this year I have a ticket for the fireworks over the Thames as they're back on so I'm making a bit more of an effort (and I can walk home from Embankment if needs be).

The cleaning and laundry is something I didn't realise so many people did, but I do that too Halloween Smile

PandaOrLion · 30/10/2022 18:29

Holiday with friends. Lakes, Peaks, Forest of Dean. Usually about 12 adults and various children although we’ve done 40 people before. It’s always chilled and people opt in and out of whatever they want, but it’s always fun.

808Kate1 · 30/10/2022 18:30

Massive clean out during the day, boozy for the bells then the traditional steak pie on the 1st. We don't really go out much any more, crap weather and too expensive for a night you barely remember! So we tend to just drink, eat and watch box sets or (embarrassingly) Jools Holland.

autienotnaughty · 30/10/2022 18:30

Before kids house party or pub with friends. Now usually with in-laws

This sounds nice, I lived in London for many years but have never done the Fireworks over the Thames. I'm guessing it's very, very crowded. Where is good to stand?

Snowpaw · 30/10/2022 18:31

I like to take the opportunity to cook something new or a bit more elaborate than normal. One year I made mayonnaise from scratch, with steak and home made frites. Another year I made pies from scratch and had people over to share them. Other years I've roasted a duck.

BashfulClam · 30/10/2022 18:32

@TrashyPanda steak pie on ne’erday is law up here.

Jellykat · 30/10/2022 18:35

Sit here by myself as i have for the last 7 years, but thats ok i usually watch tv and MN.. kids have flown the nest now but were usually out partying before that.
