NYE what do you all do?

And how old are your kids?

Before kids, we'd spend NYE with my dh's family but they live far away and my PIL are divorced now. Through the sleepless years, I didn't give much thought about NYE and we often ended up not celebrating but would have friends over on 1.1. for a long brunch board games etc.

Kids are all preteens and above now and I feel stuck for what to do.

So what do you all do? And do you enjoy it? I find it a bit hard to stay up past 11.30 😂

I'm in Thailand, can't wait.

We usually do "party food" and get drinks in, kids stay up till after midnight and we celebrate mainly indoors or at families. Do fireworks and then crash out in bed around 1. I'm pregnant this year so will probably be in bed by about 8 😂

Go to my parents for steak pie with DH, DS and my bro and his family. Then back to our own houses about 7 or 8pm. Watch bit of TV, get DS to bed and watch more TV and eat snacks. Last year DH and I rang in the bells whilst in the middle of a Fortnite match though 😂 Slight change from usual. Love a bit of Fortnite.

Back in the day I'd go out with my friend to bars but never really enjoyed it as it was always packed, expensive and getting a taxi home was a nightmare.

The past couple of years we've just had a little party at home because of covid. Buffet for dinner and plenty of sweets, music and played games on the switch. This year we'll probably be going to family for a party.

Usually DH and I stay up to watch the fireworks on tv, having put the kids to bed as normal. We might have a drink of something, which, as neither of us are big drinkers, is a special thing for us.
On the 1st we take the tree and decs down, and usually cook something a bit special for dinner, and have a fancy pudding. DH often pops out to get a bunch of flowers as a splash of colour to "replace the tree".

It's my birthday. Before kids we used to go away for a few days, have a nice meal and find something to do for midnight, then our NYD tradition was to go to the art house cinema wherever we were and watch an old film (best one ever was the bicycle thief in Brighton). Since kids we have a tradition of going out for lunch and then to the local Xmas lights thing (eg Kew). Come home and have a takeaway and have a fake new year with kids (fireworks on youtube). Most years we manage to stay up until midnight. NYD we go for a bike ride.

Along with some PP's, I find it a depressing day, although I do like NYD!
My happiest NYE was when TV put on lots of episodes of Shamelss. FINALLY, something other than Jools to watch.. I giggled my way through it, thinking great, someone's finally realised that we don't ALL go out or want to watch Jools.. never happened again. :-(

Order a Chinese to consume with (too much) prosecco after which I tend to fall asleep well before midnight! This year is out first with a baby so likely there will be less prosecco but more chance of me being woken up around midnight!

Used to do family stuff, but since my parents split up (when I was in my mid 20s) I just stay in with DP, get a takeaway, watch a film, have a nice bottle of wine.

It's not worth the aggro picking which parent to celebrate with, so we all just sit on our own instead.

Dragonfly909 · 31/10/2022 11:59

Takeaway and film these days, and hope the toddler stays asleep!

SmokedHaddockChowder · 31/10/2022 12:06

We're 38 and 40, no kids.
A couple of NYEs we've gone to a friends for some drinks. But I think last year we just stayed in the 2 of us, had some fizz and were definitely in bed before 12. We'll probably do that this year too.
We like to get up early on the 1st and do something active to mark the new year - like a half marathon or huge hike.

minipie · 31/10/2022 12:24

We usually have friends over, some years it’s been a small group, last year one couple and their kids who are friends with ours came to stay. Then we take the kids out on NYD. Low key but feels like we’ve done something iyswim.

Hopefully, takeaway with a film and some bedroom activities . Probably not in that order
