NYE what do you all do?

And how old are your kids?

Before kids, we'd spend NYE with my dh's family but they live far away and my PIL are divorced now. Through the sleepless years, I didn't give much thought about NYE and we often ended up not celebrating but would have friends over on 1.1. for a long brunch board games etc.

Kids are all preteens and above now and I feel stuck for what to do.

So what do you all do? And do you enjoy it? I find it a bit hard to stay up past 11.30 😂

DH prepares the steak for the steak pie (another who has a traditional new year steak pie). We used to stay up have a drink, big of shortbread and Black bun. These days it's a quick call to the girls then bed usually we'll before midnight.

Passmethecrisps · 30/10/2022 18:36

Small children so typically we would do something during the day of Hogmanay. We have gone to ceilidhs before but they are not really my bag. Locally they do fireworks at 9pm for kids so generally they go to bed after that. DH and I will have some nice nibbles and fizz. It isn’t unusual for me to head to bed. We have a nice dinner on New Year’s Day. Possibly pie

SealSquish · 30/10/2022 18:38

Honestly - nothing!

I don’t have kids but all my friends do. Previously we have had house parties where the kids end up asleep where they fall. Then we realised none of us were that arsed 🤣

Now I tend to get some nice snack bits in, watch a film or something, then watch the fireworks from the upstairs window (up a hill so can see over the whole town). Bed by 12.30.

Also, I like to have the house spotless, ready for a fresh new year. My mums always done it, cleansed and ready for a new start.

Witchcraftandhokum · 30/10/2022 18:48

We sit at home and make desperate but futile attempts to calm our hyperventilating dog thanks to all the selfish bastards with their fireworks.

Lindy2 · 30/10/2022 18:51

In the evening we don't tend do much. We have a few party nibbles out and watch TV until midnight.

During the day though we head to the coast. We'll have a walk on the beach, play in the amusements for a while, eat fish and chips and perhaps do something like crazy golf.

A day by the seaside is our new year's eve family tradition

This sounds nice, I lived in London for many years but have never done the Fireworks over the Thames. I'm guessing it's very, very crowded. Where is good to stand?

Well there are six ticketed areas (I have a Blue ticket which is a head view from the north side of the river near Embankment) but I don't think there's a 'bad' view since it's in the sky. I've never been before, so I'm sure somebody else will know more Halloween Smile

I usually go to see When Harry Met Sally (cheesy, I know) at the Prince Charles on NYE, so I'll either nip home after that, eat and walk back down or have a walk round Soho and Chinatown and eat there before I walk down to Westminster. And yy to steak pie on January 1st 😊

DimplesToadfoot · 30/10/2022 18:57

I stay in with my dog, she's good as gold with the fireworks and if I have to stay with her to keep her that way then I'm happy to, besides she's good company. If my DS asks I might also look after my GD while he goes out partying, she's great company too for a 4yr old, win win

TeddyTed · 30/10/2022 18:57

We are converts to a lunchtime celebration on NYE - we go out to a nice pub or restaurant for a family lunch, then back for some nibbles and fizzy in the evening, plus Jools Holland. We normally just about stay up for midnight. A new tradition that seems to have crept in for NYD is Domino’s pizza for tea 😂

Chikapu · 30/10/2022 18:58

In bed at half ten with a cup of earl grey and a book. I've never really understood the fuss over new year.

blobby10 · 30/10/2022 19:02

I go to bed at normal time, keep my fingers crossed that not too many people have fireworks (bloody stupid thing that only started for the millennium as a special one off thing!!) x tried going to friends for dinner/party a couple of times but it wasn’t for me x full of admiration for anyone who is able to ‘do’ the whole New Year thing- it’s just the same shit different number on the end of the year for me

Shoxfordian · 30/10/2022 19:04

We usually have dinner at home and a few drinks, watch the fireworks and go to bed

AnApparitionQuippedFromDeepInsideACrypt · 30/10/2022 19:05

Not much! We don't have children. The last couple of years we've played Scrabble until midnight, watched the fireworks on telly and then gone to bed.

Hbh17 · 30/10/2022 19:13

Nothing - I don't understand what we are supposed to be celebrating! If anything, NYE is one of the most depressing nights of the year.

HelenWick · 30/10/2022 20:37

When DC were little I used to change the clocks a few times so it was 'midnight' at 9pm. We'd 'party' and watch the NYE fireworks in sydney for a finale. It was so brilliant that when I confessed to DS 18 and DD 16 last year they asked me to do it for all future NYEs 😂😂

Mybumlooksbig · 30/10/2022 22:54

Picky food, Jools Holland and Champagne at home

CoffeeLover90 · 30/10/2022 22:58

I'll be working 😁 I sacrifice NYE off for Christmas eve, happy with that now I'm a parent.
Prior to DS was staying home with picky food, lots of alcohol, stay up until midnight to watch the fireworks then sleep.

Cherryblossoms85 · 30/10/2022 23:03

@HelenWick that's absolutely genius!

Crucible · 30/10/2022 23:10

Batten down the hatches as much as we can as I have a little dog who is terrified of fireworks.

JaceLancs · 30/10/2022 23:48

DC grown up so do their own thing
DP and I have a long-standing NYE arrangement with a friend - we just eat - drink - chat etc and have a chilled evening

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 31/10/2022 01:10

Two teenagers and we get a takeaway (usually Chinese) watch films and then around 11 put the telly on in anticipation of the "Bongs" from Big Ben at midnight 😁

Mentalpiece · 31/10/2022 01:50

I do a buffet for the kids, their spouses and the grandkids at around five in the evening, then once they go home, we put some music on and have a couple of drinks.
Then after opening the front door to let the old year out and the new year in, we go to bed.

SpeckofDustUponMySoul · 31/10/2022 05:47

I used to go out when I was younger, to a pub or club, but don't think I have 'celebrated' since my early 20s.
Nowadays, NYE is the anniversary of the worst day of my life, so I try to ignore it and not get too melancholic.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 31/10/2022 05:49

Usually asleep come midnight but this year I have booked a holiday barn in the middle of nowhere and will celebrate and very quiet one there - bliss.

MrsDThomas · 31/10/2022 05:55

Nothing!

dh rarely drinks. Im not bothered neither. Dd is 20 and doesn’t drink but drives and last year she played taxi to friends and charged them.

dd is 18 so will hopefully be back with uni pals in the city,

ds is 14 and will be on his x box.

well have a chinese or something. NYD is usually a mountain walk for me, alone.

DullAndOvercast · 31/10/2022 05:57

I didn't grow up doing anything on NY eve - but did grow up with tradition of NY dinner next day - Sunday/Christmas lunch and we do that with our kids.

DH grew up with his parents going out to pubs and started going along well before he was legal - so in his 20s he went home and did that - even when I was pg with pfb just having moved to were he was - I stayed home very ill.

Few years we went over with baby and he and his parents went out while I stayed home with kids - couldn't take them out with us even when it was friends house parties and no-one else was willing to stop with them - then that finally stopped we started staying up watch TV and having a drink.

Last year we did cook out with fire pit and few sparklers in garden with teens and the fireworks on telly at midnight - then meal on NY day - all of which I enjoyed.
