Going on holiday in a week
Me and boyfriend said to make it special we will stay in hotel night before and night we arrive home (due to late arrival )
Anyway we decided to stay in double tree and I said I would book going and he would book coming back (we both agreed )
So I book and pay £115
He then tells me last night for the hotel home he has booked premier in £49

Am I being a mug here ?
I said you said to stay at double tree ?
He says I know but this was cheaper

Now I have only booked and pay on arrival
Do I cancel and book a premier inn for night before too?
But I love the room we have it's a runway view and it will be lovely

Aibu ? What do I do ?

I honestly couldn't get worked up about a room either side of a holiday and I'd go with the cheapest.

QuinkWashable · 30/10/2022 14:51

I always go for the on-concourse (or as close to as possible) - I don't care about views (although Bloc has nice ones sometimes).. I will say that I stayed at the Hilton at Heathrow that's in the middle of the carpark (at Gatwick I use Bloc with the kids, or the Yo if I'm alone) and I was AMAZED at how quiet it was given I was literally looking out of the window at people winding up and down the corkscrews into/out of the carpark!

If both hotels are off-concourse, then they're both a pain, and I would base it on how good the breakfast was :D TBH, I think that the premier inn will be fine, the Hilton will be a bit nicer, but not nice enough to worry, and have him pay for one more dinner than you.

QuebecBagnet · 30/10/2022 14:51

Hostel?? I have never seen an ensuite in a hostel

You’re not looking hard enough. I’ve stayed in hostels all over the world and only had en suites. I’m staying in Edinburgh central youth hostel soon and have a private, en suite room.

OP- do what you like. Personally I wouldn’t pay more for a DoubleTree. But if you think the runway view is worth it then do it…..I can get that might be quite nice. But you may have to accept your bf doesn’t think it’s worth the extra which is also ok. Work often put me up in Hilton’s for courses. I genuinely don’t think they’re any better than a Premiere Inn and I’ve actually had nicer Travelodges.

MintyGreenDreams · 30/10/2022 14:53

Yanbu i booked Radisson blu at manchester which was 200.Its liberally attached to the airport by a corridor. If dh had of changed it id have been more than pissed off.

MintyGreenDreams · 30/10/2022 14:53

Literally

If you’re a hotel snob you wouldn’t stay at Hilton properties. They’re just a regular 4-star chain. Nothing remotely special about them.

I mean snob as in I’d never stay at a premier inn, or such like.

Also you are aware the Hilton as a group operate luxury resorts etc. the Waldorf for example

Premier inn breakfast though! Yummy

It really isn't. I'd rather buy a coffee and pastry somewhere.

But I still wouldn't pay that much extra for an airport hotel - the main part of the holiday is once you're away.

Premier Inn breakfasts are dog shit.

Pipsquiggle · 30/10/2022 14:59

If you're coming back late and you'll be knackered from travelling, I would probably just go for the cheaper option and get some kip TBH

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 30/10/2022 15:00

ScarierThanBoo · 30/10/2022 12:24

Tight bastard! Chuck him and go alone, or cancel and claim on your holiday insurance.

OMG I’ve heard it all now 🤣🤣🤣🤣

QuinkWashable · 30/10/2022 15:01

To me, the airport hotel is worth it because I have 2 kids, and it means I can leave at my leisure the afternoon/evening before, rather than have to worry about traffic or strict timetables. I sometimes make the money back anyway, because I can take the stupid-o'clock flights with no problem, since I'm only a short walk to the gate now (especially if they let you check bags the evening before).

It turns the chore of travel, into something that I don't mind (and is sometimes actually quite pleasurable.

WilsonMilson · 30/10/2022 15:03

At the end of a holiday, I’m just glad to get home, I don’t really understand the attraction of another night in a different hotel at that point. Or the night before really, but that’s not the point.

Premier Inn aren’t any worst than a a Double Tree - well apart from that you don’t get a warm cookie! I’d save the money and book the Premier Inn. Well, actually I wouldn’t bother at all and spend the saved money on the actual holiday, but that’s just me.

WilsonMilson · 30/10/2022 15:04

Premier inn breakfast though! Yummy

The fact that someone thinks this makes me a bit depressed. What are you eating the rest of the time if this is ‘yummy’ to you? ☹️

TugboatAnnie · 30/10/2022 15:11

Just halve the total cost. If he baulks at this, he's not for you.

EasterIssland · 30/10/2022 15:22

Unless you agreed on spending a minimum amount of money not sure what the problem is tbh. As long as the room is ok I’d not get worked up with this

OnTheBoardwalk · 30/10/2022 15:24

I absolutely get the reasoning around staying over night before a holiday but coming back do you not just want to get home? How far away is the airport?

how far away from the airport is the premier inn? I bet it’s not close like the Doubletree. Does it have shuttle bus or you relying on getting a taxi to the premier inn. This makes a big difference in my opinion

he's being a tightwad

Worriedpartner1234 · 30/10/2022 15:32

You have paid £66 more. I would be making sure he is spending the £66 in the way of food and drinks on the night you are in the Doubletree.

Orangello · 30/10/2022 15:33

People who are saying that cheaper is fine and yummy breakfast (really? Compared to what?) are really missing the point here.

BF suggested the fancier one. The deal was that OP books one night, he books one night. He, without any discussion, booked something else.

Only reasonable solution is to go 50-50 for both. And keen an eye on other signs of spending other people's money while pinching his own pennies.

MingoDringo · 30/10/2022 15:39

I couldn't get excited about staying at the airport on the way home so would just book a cheapie if I really couldn't just drive home.

Movinghouseatlast · 30/10/2022 15:40

I think this is the right way round, the fancier hotel the night before and a crash pad the night after. But you should be paying 50/50 of the total.

You need to discuss it properly. If he's happy for you to pay more then what is his reasoning for this.

Apropos of nothing I stayed in hotels at least two nights a week for nearly 20 years. Doubletree are always lovely in my experience. I had one of the nicest hotel breakfasts I've ever had in the Edinburgh one. Premier Inn breakfasts are usually just fuel, but they do vary a lot.

So, I’m intrigued. The people who are answering in this way - do you think that’s what the OP is asking? What your preferences would be?

Burgoo · 30/10/2022 15:43

This is a non-issue.

You could have easily paid for a cheaper room. Thats on you OP.

This. I don’t know if it’s a reading comprehension issue or if some people just genuinely don’t care what’s being asked. But ‘I’d prefer the cheaper option’ isn’t at all relevant!
