Woman shouting at security in ASDA?

Driedpotatochip · 29/10/2022 22:40

Just did a quick late night shop, only one door open and as I was walking in this woman with maybe her son were walking out when their trolley locked.

As they’d blocked one side of the door I had to wait whilst she was screaming at security at how dangerous this was and security were like - there was signs. But she just kept shouting saying she was going to do more than go to customer service.

Was she unreasonable or is locking trolleys ok? I’ve actually never seen it happen before.

Presumably the door is usually an entry rather than exit?

it's crap if people have a lot of shopping & yes it's a bit nasty if you have arthritis or are elderly etc but for the vast majority it's just an annoyance.

shouting seldom gets you anywhere though! Daft woman.

jonesy1999 · 29/10/2022 22:44

Never heard of locking trolleys. What is that? Do you mean the wheels lock if something in the trolley sets off the security alarm?

WonderingWhatNow · 29/10/2022 22:45

The trolley will lock if it’s empty, happened to me recently, anti theft apparently. It did give me a jump but shouting about it is strange!

Bigslippers · 29/10/2022 22:45

What does the trolley locked mean?
Is it a security thing?

Ttbhappy · 29/10/2022 22:45

Toddlers scream and shout when they don't get their own way some people just need to grow up!!

Discovereads · 29/10/2022 22:47

Trolley locks are if you take the trolley out of the shopping area of the supermarket. The wheels lock. And they lock if you try and take a trolley with you to the toilets. That’s why they have signs up not to take the trolleys with you into the toilets. There’s no cctv in the toilets and people used to do this to shoplift food. The woman was being unreasonable.

PAFMO · 29/10/2022 22:48

Our Asda has trolleys that lock once you go over a certain line with them in the carpark as well.

Thesearmsofmine · 29/10/2022 22:48

She was BU but maybe she was just having a shifty day? It would piss me off if it happened and I had shopping to get out to the car(although I wouldn’t shout at people).
Our Asda trolleys lock past a certain point to stop theft.

autastic · 29/10/2022 22:51

This happened to me and I shouted one because I was shocked and the also because I was in pain, it just locked and I was travelling forward and went straight into it and lost my balance and fell onto the metal. I was fucking angry there is no need for it, and as for signs the only one in the Asda I was in, someone was standing in front of it.
As a consequence I don't shop on Asda anymore.
seriously how many trolleys do they really lose?
I didn't carry on shouting as I recovered and I didn't shout at the staff, but I did complain.

mycatisannoying · 29/10/2022 22:52

She sounds like a loon.

No there’s two automatic double doors for both exit and entrance but one was closed. Just added it in to explain why I was stood still watching her - as I physically couldn’t get through the door as too many people were walking out and she was stuck there.

An annoyance? I’ve never had this happen to me ever. I’ve also never seen it done before tonight. She had to get her receipt out so I feel it’s potentially not random checks.

Sorry that happened to you.

There were quite a few signs at a height to warn in this situation, but in reality most people won’t take notice of them - I didn’t.

I didn’t think it was to stop trolleys being stolen. More to physically stop someone leaving the store.

The wheels physically lock so it won’t leave the store entrance. I think it would shock most people.

I don't understand the trolley locked as she was leaving the actual store? Why? Normally you would take a trolley to the car.

Womencanlift · 29/10/2022 23:07

Am I being daft but how do you take your shopping to the car if it doesn’t let you leave the shop with the trolley? I shop in Asda weekly and have never experienced this or seen it happen

AriettyHomily · 29/10/2022 23:09

Trolleys lock in our local store if you take them out of the car park, not at the door

To stop thieves. It doesn’t happen to every trolley.

I worked in a supermarket as a student, we didn’t have this security feature but people would fill up a trolley full of meat (especially turkeys at Christmas) and run out the store.

Or I guess it’s easy to pay for 90% of your shopping and look more legit. Then the locking helps security to check the entire content of the trolley.

Plus I’m not sure security has that much power once you’ve left the store.

Ah yes I have seen that at the edge of the car park but not at the door where security are. That’s just odd

AutumnsCrow · 29/10/2022 23:18

Isn't it the other way round? You have to have left the shop to be done for theft?

Plus, are you saying Security have a special button they press to lock invidivual the trolleys at the exits?

VladmirsPoutine · 29/10/2022 23:22

I sometimes envy people that can do something like that then just casually walk off - I absolutely can not move through life like that at all. I'd be arrested and thrown in jail within the hour. In any case shouting at the security in this instance is completely unreasonable.

PureBlackVoid · 29/10/2022 23:26

I thought the trollies locked at the entrance if they hadn’t been through a checkout area? Magnets get deactivated or something (could be wrong..)

I don’t know babes, I’m not Asda security xx

The trolley locking system is basically that when you come in through the main doors with the trolley it "activates" the trolley lock which is only "deactivated" when you go through the checkout/exit the self scan area, allowing you to exit the store unimpeded. If you don't go through a checkout then when you go through the main doors the trolley will lock as it hasn't gone through the area needed to deactivate it.

It is a loss prevention system as basically it should only lock the trolley if you're trying to leave the store without going through a payment point. If someone fills up a trolley with items then tries to dash out of the store without paying then the trolley will lock at the door and stop them ... They might grab a few items from the trolley as they make a run for it but the store doesn't lose all of the stock.

Obviously there will be innocent people who are affected occasionally - if an individual trolley lock has malfunctioned and not deactivated; if you go to the cafe after shopping then the trolley lock will reset after a certain amount of time; if you just come in for a browse and you don't buy anything etc - but when those trolleys lock then a simple check that you have a receipt/trolley is empty and the security colleague can unlock it manually with a handheld device.

Thank you for the explanation, I was so confused about this Trolley Lock thing.
Makes total sense now.
It's like an extra security thing.

Well this is fascinating stuff.

Sorry if I sounded all interrogatey, @Driedpotatochip. I'm really intrigued by your thread tbh.
