Woman shouting at security in ASDA?

Driedpotatochip · 29/10/2022 22:40

Just did a quick late night shop, only one door open and as I was walking in this woman with maybe her son were walking out when their trolley locked.

As they’d blocked one side of the door I had to wait whilst she was screaming at security at how dangerous this was and security were like - there was signs. But she just kept shouting saying she was going to do more than go to customer service.

Was she unreasonable or is locking trolleys ok? I’ve actually never seen it happen before.

This is the first I have heard of this type of cart. I don't believe they have such things here in western Canada yet. It certainly would help with cart theft. I often see carts left in bushes as people walk home with shopping and leave the carts in random places. Some of the stores have coin-operated locking mechanism to deter theft.

I do wonder with self check-out in so many stores; how do they manage theft? I'm sure there are a lot of people not scanning all of their items.

Never heard of locking trolleys. What is that? Do you mean the wheels lock if something in the trolley sets off the security alarm?

Had one the other day!!! Every 2 meters if iust completely stopped and rattled my small children on the seat. It was awful. And the security guard did nothing about it! I had to put it back!!!

I didn't know this could happen either until it happened to me the other day. I'd gone to pick up a large item from the Argos within Sainsburys. I had not other shopping to get but needed the trolley to transport the item. A member of Argos staff was pushing the trolley as it was heavy and offered to help load it into my car. As we went through security the trolley locked as the trolley hadn't been through the Sainsburys checkout area. Even the Argos staff member wasn't aware that it could happen.

The trolley locking system is basically that when you come in through the main doors with the trolley it "activates" the trolley lock which is only "deactivated" when you go through the checkout/exit the self scan area, allowing you to exit the store unimpeded. If you don't go through a checkout then when you go through the main doors the trolley will lock as it hasn't gone through the area needed to deactivate it.

It is a loss prevention system as basically it should only lock the trolley if you're trying to leave the store without going through a payment point. If someone fills up a trolley with items then tries to dash out of the store without paying then the trolley will lock at the door and stop them ... They might grab a few items from the trolley as they make a run for it but the store doesn't lose all of the stock.

Obviously there will be innocent people who are affected occasionally - if an individual trolley lock has malfunctioned and not deactivated; if you go to the cafe after shopping then the trolley lock will reset after a certain amount of time; if you just come in for a browse and you don't buy anything etc - but when those trolleys lock then a simple check that you have a receipt/trolley is empty and the security colleague can unlock it manually with a handheld device.

Well that explains why it happened to me in sainsburys. We’d brought a bed for DS from the Argos inside the supermarket and the trolley wheels locked up in the lobby. I nearly tipped the whole thing over when it stopped so suddenly. Didn’t shout at anyone though, just sent DH to customer services, staff came over, waved a wand at the wheels and off we went

Crikey, never heard of this. Mind you, we probably don't have anything this sophisticated in NI. What happens, though, if you don't have a receipt? I hardly ever take a receipt if asked at either the self checkout or the real living person checkout (unless I'm buying an item which might need to be returned.) How would you prove you had paid if there was a trolley malfunction?

Soubriquet · 30/10/2022 07:03

My trolley did that once. I was quite confused but I didn’t get irate. It’s just a security measure.

It was quickly resolved

I was thinking the same. After reading this thread I have taken a mental note to always take a receipt as I only take one now if I buy something I potentially may return (clothes or home stuff) just incase I get a malfunctioning trolley

Hwory · 30/10/2022 07:13

Asdas my main shop so I’ve had this happen to me. It’s very ubrupt and it hurts.

I’ve also seen a pregnant woman go into the back of her trolley with the receipt in her hand.

Whilst I understand the need for loss prevention I’m glad people are suing. You can’t just injure your paying customers.

CryCeratops · 30/10/2022 07:19

Sainsbury’s have this too.
I’ve had this happen before when I’ve been picking things up from the Argos inside the Sainsbury’s shop with a trolley, and gone straight from the Argos to the car.

Although I’d assumed it must have been the Argos staff not deactivating some security tag on my items rather than me not taking the trolley through the Sainsbury’s checkout! It was all sorted out very quickly by the staff on the door anyway.

PorridgewithQuark · 30/10/2022 07:36

You say she had to get her receipt out - so she had paid and wasn't a shoplifter as she was able to do this?

She was with her son - a child or baby presumably, or was she an older lady with an adult man? I ask because if she had a baby in the trolley seat then the wheels unexpectedly locking with a jolt might well give a parent a fright!

This happened leaving the building to go to the car park and in front of lots of people, so humiliating as well as a shock if she'd done nothing wrong.

Of course she shouldn't have shouted but it's fairly understandable that she was shocked and humiliated as well as very much inconvenienced.

Shouting at staff is always unreasonable and of course makes everything worse.

However her experience sounds unpleasant and if she was frazzled at the end of a long day at work, having just picked up a tired child from chilcare and done a big shop - spending a lot of money in the store - being upset is reasonable!

What happens, though, if you don't have a receipt?

You tell them what till you were at, and they reprint it to check

That was possibly my DP trying to find out where they've hidden the Yeo Kefir yogurt this week. It sets him off.

Ah, fair enough thanks.

A bit of extra stress though I suppose, on top of the sprained wrist and public humiliation😬

Fascinating thread. More glad than ever I almost do the food shopping online.

jellybeanteaparty · 30/10/2022 08:02

This happened to me yesterday at Tesco's.I had been through self check out. They just remote unlocked my wheels and didn't ask to check a receipt. I asked if they wanted to check my shopping but they didn't. I thought it was triggered by me exiting too fast! Glad I know now thanks to the thread.

Yes, a lovely ten minute wait, holding up other people in the queue who are tutting away while it gets sorted out and you tend to your own injuries.

Always say yes to a receipt, kids.

MissPoldark · 30/10/2022 08:06

Never knew this!
i can’t believe they even have this in sainsbury’s where it’s difficult to find a non wonky wheel trolley that will move in a straight line without getting stuck.

@MissPoldark lol. I just said that to my friend!! She's not a MNer, she doesn't believe me that it's a thing!

blippi123 · 30/10/2022 08:19

You wouldn't see this kind of behaviour at Waitrose

ineedakickupthe · 30/10/2022 08:20

Makes sense to stop people from leaving with a lot of stolen goods that might otherwise get away with it. Sadly they probably just move on to smaller stores. Meat and alcohol is constantly being stolen from our local ones.

The students in my halls would take their shopping home resulting in a pile of trolleys in the halls car park. Others would take them back to their student digs. This was over 20 years ago with Safeway. They brought in locking trolleys to stop this from happening.

minou123 · 30/10/2022 08:22

Does anyone else remember when trolleys had those little "break" things on the wheels, like prams/buggies have?

They used to be really useful in the car park. Now, when your loading your shopping in the car, you have to quickly throw your stuff in the boot and catch your trolley before it rolls into the car next to you.

This happened to me, I was 8 months pregnant, exhausted, and pushing out shopping after paying at the tills. It locked as I tried to push out the exit and I rammed my huge belly into it. Was incredibly upset as it hurt and the store security only cared about double checking my receipt. I had to go and get another trolley myself and reload it as they couldn't deactivate it. Ended up going to see my Dr to be sure as the area was so tender. A complaint letter was never responded to. Haven't shopped there since.

Damnautocorrect · 30/10/2022 08:55

This happened to me in lidl. It locked because I hadn’t got into the shop quick enough…. I’d only picked up compost from outside and had a quick look at the plants. I wasn’t long. You’d have no chance of getting a trolley, going to your car and getting your child out, putting child in trolley before you find the trolley locked halfway across a path of cars in the car park.

FayeGovan · 30/10/2022 08:56

The shoplifting going on now would blow your mind. Stores are usually short staffed or understaffed. People are desperate in a way not seen since the war. So shops need to do something. If this woman actually shouted at a security guard i hope he bloody answered her. Thats abuse of staff and not on.
