...or would this annoy you too?

It's my birthday next month and my partner suggested going to see a show (live theatre). My favourite show is on at a local venue on the day of my actual birthday, so it all sounded wonderful.

We went online earlier this week to buy the tickets and my partner asked if we could put them on my credit card, and he would transfer me the money. Well, today he transferred me the money just for the 1 ticket (his ticket!). So I have bought my own ticket to a birthday treat which was his idea for me.

AIBU to feel a bit annoyed? Can't work out if he is tight/stingy or both. Or if I am being unreasonable. If money was an issue then I wouldn't think twice - I wouldn't expect him to pay for my ticket if he was struggling. But we live together, split all bills equally 50:50, and every month when he gets paid he spends between £100-£200 on clothes and video games. Last month we went to see a similar show, and I paid for both tickets. Not to be "tit for tat", but ultimately this show we are going to next month was his suggestion as a birthday idea for me..

We both earn a very similar wage.

AIBU or is he?

He is - just say "you said taking me to the show was my birthday gift so how come you expect me to pay for my own ticket"?

Pennepasta29 · 29/10/2022 20:43

Defo cheeky! I'd be having a chat

AnneLovesGilbert · 29/10/2022 20:45

Wtf? Tell him it’s not a bloody gift if you’re paying for it yourself. He’s taking the piss.

VladmirsPoutine · 29/10/2022 20:46

Yes it would annoy me. Ask him what gives?

pilates · 29/10/2022 20:46

Definitely a CF

Dacadactyl · 29/10/2022 20:47

WTAF? I swear to God i would dump him.

Gunpowder · 29/10/2022 20:48

Maybe he got mixed up?

I would say in a jokey way ‘erm, so what kind of a birthday treat do you call this if I’m paying for my own ticket?!’ If he transfers you the money it’s just a mistake, if he doesn’t I would dump him.

AlisonDonut · 29/10/2022 20:50

What the fuck is wrong with these men?

Pointlessuser · 29/10/2022 20:53

Was the ticket actually going to be your birthday present from him or was you just discussing things to actually do on your birthday? Because present yes CF, but just an activity on the day then it makes sense to each pay for your own ticket.

Thanks everyone. Reassuring to hear that I am not BU!

The more I think about it, the more it really bothers me

If it's supposed to be a present from him, then of course he is being unreasonable.
