To wonder what the Masons actually do?

I hear various ideas from “they go for piss ups and fancy dinners” to “ they are a shadowy organisation with bloodthirsty rituals”

but what, do they actually get up to? Anyone know?

NC for this....
My Dad's father was a Mason. Died leaving two very young sons.
They were a very ordinary family and grandmother was left (just before WW2) trying to raise two kids on a clerk's salary.
The Masons paid for my Dad's and his brother's education. So they spent the war getting a good education in a boarding school away from London, where my grandmother knew they were safe.
My Dad remains very grateful for this (though actually, he never did become a Mason himself).

MilliwaysUniverse · 29/10/2022 09:57

My boyfriend wants to join because he is researching his family history and has hit a bit of a block, his dad and other family were Masons and he thinks their records could be useful, but has to be a Mason to access them. He's an unlikely Mason, being a hippy with a Green Party membership!

@audeloquipalam of course my research wasn’t googling it, it was part of my masters in traumatic memory so I did need to be just a little more thorough…I’m saying that this info is well known and available to anyone who can use google. Why are you so oppositional to what I’ve said? What is int that riled?
i have good chats with my Dad about his religion and you have no place to call me a liar.

We're both anonymous strangers arguing on the internet. We can say what we like. You can tell me to fuck off and I can call you a liar.

If you like you can call me a liar too, because she’s right.

TheNosehasit · 29/10/2022 10:11

I have never received charitable assistance from one.

There one I know of who is on youtube a lot for entirely different reasons. His name is David Abel and he and his wife were stuck on a cruise ship for a few weeks in quarantine in Japan when covid first hit.

He's an insufferably arrogant twat (he's English).

It's an elitist society with jobs for the boys. It keeps power within a few privileged.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 29/10/2022 10:13

Raise a lot of money for charity, a place for males to be males, a bit of dressing up. ‘Not a secret society but a society with secrets’ so the saying goes. Like with all groups, some will be wrong uns but my Dad, brothers, nephews and many of their peers are in the masons, so based on their character, I’d say they were mostly good uns. They also look after their own, and the families of deceased masons. Attended the funeral of my Dad’s friend recently, he was high up in the masons and fellow brothers carried his coffin and gave him a noble send off. It was quite touching actually.

Seriously, an intriguing thread and your trying to or it seems your derailing it, what happened to good manners.

SezFrankly · 29/10/2022 10:17

They welcome ladies now too!

The nuts bit seems to be the traditional pomp element. One lad I know said he’s joined recently and it’s a night out once a month. Raise money for charity, have guest speakers, organize dinners etc.

lonelyinyournightmare · 29/10/2022 10:17

Basically they look out for each other, network and do varying amonuts for charity - some do loads, some just a token amount.

A bit like public schools really. Except they let the lower orders join in. I know a few self employed tradespeople who have joined or who are desperate to join. It's the closest they will get to Eton.

SezFrankly · 29/10/2022 10:20

There’s a lot of imaginary nonsense being posted as fact on here 😂😂

What’s the room with the chequered floor all about?

Quite the opposite. The bad language is a direct reference to the way the poster had addressed me in an earlier exchange.

Someone at work is a Mason. He says that they just throw a good dinner.

JanglyBeads · 29/10/2022 11:32

There's a lot of "he says that..", I think it's just", "they do loads of good things so the ritual must just be a game which they enjoy" on here.

But yet many many people from the Pope to Fascist and Communist leaders, via senior police officers, have tried to control or stamp out their influence and activities. (See the links in my previous post).

I wonder why?

PaulaTrilloe · 29/10/2022 12:53

@Bramblejoos it was in between the lockdowns September 2020

Why is it ?

Technical, they are not a secret society as they have a public image, but they may have secrets ect

I prefer transparency. Secrets are secret for a reason.

I prefer transparency. Secrets are secret for a reason.

Which is understandable, but how much information is contained in the intelligence services archives, and mission details etc, of what actually happened vs what officially happened via the papers ect

TheNosehasit · 29/10/2022 14:34

Secrets generally hide a multitude of sins. They cover up corruption, they exploit their power and lies always follow secrecy. Why hide? Why hide? Why hide?

Secrets generally hide a multitude of sins. They cover up corruption, they exploit their power and lies always follow secrecy. Why hide? Why hide? Why hide?

In that case and by that logic, all intelligence services should release all their files of all various historical events ect, to show the truth of what happened and e.g. The Vatican archives etc
