£410 for a second (or third) hand, badly stained sofa

Silence0000 · 28/10/2022 16:32

I'm on the hunt for a cheapish sofa to replace my current one which is old and falling apart. I popped into my local BHF charity shop thinking there might be one or two for £200 or under.

£410 for an old, worn and badly stained corner sofa. You'd need to spend about £50 on throws to cover the stains!

AIBU to think that is just ridiculous?

I just knew you were going to say BHF. The electrical goods seem to be good value but the sofas are astronomical

Goldencarp · 28/10/2022 16:44

We have a 3 year old grey leather suite, a 3 seater and a 2 seater. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it and it cost £3k new. I was going to put it on gumtree for about £100. with interest free credit it’s really hard to get rid of 2nd hand sofas. BHF are having a laugh 😂

I left open mouthed. How on earth they expect to sell that is beyond me, especially when there are many places local and online that will sell you a brand new one for that price or less 😐

That's a bargain! I would bite your hand off for it if I had space for a two piece 🥺

Have you looked on Facebook market place ? I know there are all kinds of weirdos on there but sofas (even nice ones) seem to go cheap

we donated a sofa to BHF once and were horrified by the price they put on it too!

WaltzingWaters · 28/10/2022 16:49

We got one (just a 2 seater sofa) in brilliant condition off fb marketplace for £50. Have a look on there!

gamerchick · 28/10/2022 16:51

BHF is up the top for being cheeky fuckers. Selling stuff you can get cheaper for new. I don't even look in there now.

olapexidum · 28/10/2022 16:54

I literally couldn't give away a practically brand new sofa! Nobody wanted the hassle of transporting it!

Yabado · 28/10/2022 16:56

There are a few Facebook pages that are doing new sofas for under £500 with cash on delivery
No idea what the quality is like but most of them have decent recent reviews on Trust Pilot

Roselilly36 · 28/10/2022 16:58

We bought an amazing sofa in BHF recently £180.

AnApparitionQuipped · 28/10/2022 16:58

I got a real leather two-seater sofa in near mint condition for £70 from BHF, but that was about 5 years ago.

OhmygodDont · 28/10/2022 16:59

Definitely check Facebook they all seem to be cheap because it’s the hassle of booking a man with van or hiring a van.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/10/2022 17:01

Yes but you can pick them up for nothing / next to on FB and eBay and freecycle so just do that

I have yes, all I can see is ads for brand new sofas with "FREE" or "£100" on them and then when you enquire the price is actually £600+

I saw a nice one on gumtree this afternoon which I'm pretty sure is a scam as they wanted half of the payment transferred first so I've swerved that aswell.

It was easier finding a sofa when I lived in a tiny little town in the arse end of nowhere than it is here in london 🙈

Do you have a local group? Like a London sellers or south London and stuff. Check those pages.

StoneofDestiny · 28/10/2022 17:09

there are second hand and nearly new sofas going begging on internet sites - nobody seems to want them.

ComtesseDeSpair · 28/10/2022 17:11

I think BHF offer delivery and they’ve cottoned on that what puts people on low incomes off buying from Facebook or Gumtree etc is that they’d have to find and spend more money on hiring a van and man to collect it and often can’t coordinate that with the seller’s availability.

AnApparitionQuipped · 28/10/2022 17:13

Yes, BHF do offer delivery at very reasonable rates as long as you are local.

Silence0000 · 28/10/2022 17:18

I've just had another trawl through fbk marketplace and came across this one, advertised for £190 but uploaded a week ago. I think it's lovely so I've messaged the seller to see If they still have it. Fingers crossed!

Have you looked at your local auction house? Our one regularly has sofas. This week a decent looking 2*2 went for a hammer price of £60.

Silence0000 · 28/10/2022 17:22

I hadn't considered an auction house, never been to one and don't know of any but I'll have a look now and see if there are any local to me.

I have a feeling that sofa I posted above is going to turn out to be one of those false advertisements that display one price then ask for treble it 🤔

I will never donate or buy from them again. 2 delivery men turned up to take some excellent furniture from a friend. Friend has some SN. They insisted she needed to pay them £20 for collection...
I reported them to head office. It was taken seriously but no reimbursement..

MossGrowsFat · 28/10/2022 17:23

We find the more stains the more expensive, I'm also looking for a sofa but have given up looking in charity shops.

Have you seen the weird fb sofas for £87, the seller has lots of sofas on offer and every sofa is £87.

The sofa in the pic is lush

eBay, using a business seller is quite good (obviously check feedback) as they usually offer delivery.
