To think JKRowling should be in the House of Lords

She is probably the best selling living author writing in English

She has given a great deal of money to charity

She has conquered the disadvantages of being an unemployed single mother by her own efforts

She is a great role model for women and girls

Awful woman. Outside the single issue echo chamber that MN is fast becoming, most women I know either don’t care about her or actively hold her in contempt for the horrific, divisive rubbish that now appears to be spewing.

Most women you know? What are women?

Brefugee · 29/10/2022 08:26

Don't fool yourselves that the Lords have women's interests at heart. They just want to protect primogeniture.

The one thing i have been hoping for in all this (well, one of them) is that the rules over male primorgeniture are overturned. Failing that, your Legal Gender entitles you to inheritance in the same way as AMAB (!) so that all those older sisters can just declare themselves men and inherit the title. All they have to do is change their name, driving licence and BAM! Bob's your uncle. And Caroline changes her name to Charles and inherits a dukedom.
(I haven't understood why, when the eldest daughter of a king can inherit his title, that doesn't work for Dukes and Earls)

Is this how it works in Scotland? Can transmen inherit male line Scottish titles through self ID alone? I can't seem to find out online.

Why has this been removed from AIBU to here? JKR can't be mentioned outside of the confines of this board? Might as well move her book discussion to here, at this rate. Angry

It's in AIBU.

JanesMom please come back and explain why you think that JKR is an awful woman. If you are going to make a statement like that you should, at the very least, be prepared to explain your thinking.

Isn't it weird that AnApparitionQuipped and I can strongly disagree about something, yet we manage to discuss it without making accusations and threats?

Oh, wait, no, we're the normal ones. It's the ones who refuse to do this, yet claim their way is the right way, who are weird.

I got all excited then when I was quoted, I thought there might be an answer lol!

But you forgot that she aligns her self with right wing Christian groups and Nazis.

Sigh.

What on earth made you think that? When has there ever been an answer?

I've asked one of these people twice now what a woman is. All I'm getting is "everyone knows". Well apparently she doesn't!

TheKeatingFive · 29/10/2022 12:07

actively hold her in contempt for the horrific, divisive rubbish that now appears to be spewing.

Receipts for this 'horrific and divisive rubbish' pls.

I'll wait 😁

Having seen this played out many times on here and on Twitter, I so look forward to the evidence you'll be supplying

If a woman gives birth she becomes a mother, no matter if she rejects the label 'woman’.

In one sense - biologically - a trans man could be described as mother. But parenthood isn’t just about biology as pp says. Adoptive parents are still just as much parents even though not biological mother and father.

So we do redefine categories in social and legal terms that were once strictly biological. That’s leaving aside the fact that most researchers and psychiatrists/ psychologists believe there is a biopsychosocial cause of trans. That’s the prevailing view based on best evidence and clinical experience.

So it’s entirely reasonable and humane in our society to address trans men as men and as fathers if that is who they genuinely see themselves as. That is in many senses who and what they are.

But they are not men. They are women and legally and factually women who give birth are mothers. Children have the right to know the truth and facts and telling them their mother is their father is cruel and selfish.

TheKeatingFive · 29/10/2022 12:35

Evidenced by what exactly?

So it’s entirely reasonable and humane in our society to address trans men as men and as fathers if that is who they genuinely see themselves as.

Perhaps you can explain why that never applies to anything else, other than sex/gender?

If I 'genuinely see myself' as black, blind, a six year old, a cat, why wouldn't it be reasonable and humane to address me as such?

tkmethrthis · 29/10/2022 12:36

So it’s entirely reasonable and humane in our society to address trans men as men and as fathers if that is who they genuinely see themselves as. That is in many senses who and what they are.

But that's not exactly what is happening and it is not, of itself, what is being objected to. The word mother, which applies to the vast majority of women who give birth and to adoptive mothers, is being erased in case it offends a very small minority.

Once we are no longer mothers but we are birthing parent or birthing bodies, we as mothers, feel dehumanised.

Our feelings are overlooked.

It is unreasonable and inhumane to change the language we have to describe ourselves WITHOUT OUR CONSENT.

ReneBumsWombats · 29/10/2022 12:36

This is a new one. Sex isn't real because adoptive parents.

TheKeatingFive · 29/10/2022 12:39

You've got to hand it to them for the ingenuity with which they come up with new bollocks. 😂

sorry if i was confusing. No it doesn't work like that (not sure if it's been adressed in the new Scottish legislation) but in effect you can't identify into being the male heir. That doesn't change with a GRC. Assuming that an earl who transitions to female is then a Lady Earl

Igmum · 29/10/2022 12:44

Definitely JKR for the HoL. I'd vote for that

The point about the HoL is that you don't get to vote (or were you being ironic?). It's made up of hereditary peers, and people chosen ('honoured') by the (heriditary) monarchy. It's no place for anyone who genuinely supports women's rights or believes in democracy. JKR would have to 'sell out' to take a seat there, in my opinion.
