Log burner safe?

Bobbingcat · 27/10/2022 21:40

Linked to recent thread on here- are log burners safe? Does anyone use an air purifier with theirs?

I wouldn't have one on the house with small kids.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 27/10/2022 21:50

No - they cause indoor and outdoor air pollution.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 27/10/2022 21:53

And no-one ever walks their children by the road where there is huge particulate pollution.

incognitopurple · 27/10/2022 21:54

Never even crossed my mind they’d be unsafe, we don’t have one but my parents do. Unsafe how?!

lannistunut · 27/10/2022 21:54

I wouldn't have one for air quality reasons.

Apparently they are carcinogenic and linked to higher rates of lung cancer.

Redhop · 27/10/2022 22:05

I love mine. Rather collect free wood than freeze to death

Bobbingcat · 27/10/2022 22:07

@incognitopurple never crossed mine until the other thread!

Really love mine not unsafe

Orangesare · 27/10/2022 22:14

I have one. I Like log burners but would rather not have the hassle of chopping, stacking, moving wood around just so we are warm. I don’t think the risk is significant but I do live in an isolated place away from any major roads.
There will be some element of indoor air pollution but indoor air pollution is also caused by cleaning chemicals, air fresheners, candles, gas appliances, mould spores radon gas, etc.
There are plenty of other sources of outdoor air pollution people don’t bat an eye lid at exposing their children to such as traffic fumes and the particulates from roads and tyres.
Ideally we would have affordable clean heating methods but we don’t so a log burner it is and the kids are in a warm dry house. As cold and damp is harmful to health.

DozyFox · 27/10/2022 22:22

I love them and grew up with one in the house, but the main reason I decided not to get one was because of their effect on air quality.

But then I also don't have things like scented candles or air fresheners. So perhaps I'm a bit on the OTT side!

StoneofDestiny · 27/10/2022 22:27

New data from DEFRA has cut the estimated proportion of small particle pollution produced by wood burning stoves from 38 per cent to 17 per cent

There has been a lot of exaggerated reports about log burners. Modern eco log burners have significantly different outcomes to much older models. I use one and it's going to be a bonus with the way gas and electricity prices are rising so steeply.

greenstrawberries · 27/10/2022 22:30

I wouldn’t have one and I definitely wouldn’t have one with small children in the house. I don’t burn candles either.

Had one for 26 years, including with children. They are prefectly safe as long as you have a properly lined chimney and normal air circulation in the room, your stove is maintained annually/chimney professionally swept and DON'T use green or treated wood.
Seriously not rocket science.
Ignore all the over-egged comments.

AnonyMouseToday · 27/10/2022 22:32

We have one. I love it. It's keeping me warm this winter and we love having it on for family movie nights. Feels cosy and looks lovely

notnownorma · 27/10/2022 22:33

perfectly

In my defence my laptop keyboard has died so using a very old plugged in one with worn out keys..

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 27/10/2022 22:36

I'd never have one.
Trees are being cut faster than replacement trees are grown. They're also unhealthy, even the so called eco ones.

They're also bad for asthma sufferers .

HappyHappyHermit · 27/10/2022 22:38

I love ours, we only use it on very cold evenings if we're all at home and fancy the cosy feel though. I have had asthma in the past but never had a problem since having the log burner, we do only burn dried logs or eco logs though.

There is no need to use cut wood. We use dead windfall wood, cones etc. Never bought firewood in all those years. Asthma sufferer here and it never made it any worse.

Howamihere · 27/10/2022 22:39

I will happily have my (yearly cleaned & inspected) wood burner on nightly for the next 5 months. I live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by trees and next to no air pollution…I’ll take my chances over anyone living in a city or near a busy road!!!😂🤣

Ohbluepeter · 27/10/2022 22:40

We have had one for over 15 years, professionally installed with a chimney liner. My DH has asthma and doesn’t have any issue with our log burner. We only burn seasoned logs, we don’t add paper rubbish etc.

We don’t intend on using the heating this year as we’ve realised a fan carefully positioned pointing into the hall pulls lots of warm air out of the lounge to heat the rest of the house.

mondaytosunday · 27/10/2022 22:40

There are regulations regarding them. They are safer than open fires.

notnownorma · 27/10/2022 22:40

I do love all these people who've never had one confidently sounding off about them 😆

Exactly. Put them in properly in the first place, don't burn crap and they are fine. Most issues are due to improper use/installation.

GalesThisMorning · 27/10/2022 22:43

I only ever hear people fussing about them on Mumsnet! I live rurally, 90% of my neighbors (and me) burn wood all winter long. Most people either stack and season it themselves or buy seasoned logs. Chimneys swept yearly..normal chimneys on the roof, not weird new build ones that stick out sideways. I have never had to take washing in because of a neighbors fire, or had thick smoke fill my house, or have to wash soot off my car or anything else that so many Mumsnetters complain of. In the winter there is sometimes a faint smell of woodsmoke in the air, which I quite like. That's it. I think they're fine.
