To be annoyed at Prince Harry's memoir title SPARE

I have zero interest in this couple who seem to enjoy making a living on moaning about how they are poorly treated in Britain. Just saw the headline news and the cover of Harry's memoir with his face and one single word SPARE.

Get a life for goodness sake. I'm about his age and never once thought of him as a spare. He kinda invented his own tale.

Harry's not been the spare since Prince George was born.

Good point.

Him being the spare is his USP, marketing-wise. Unlike his grandmother and nephew, Harry is the future monarch's only sibling so they are a proper 'heir and spare' situation. This, combined with them being the same sex and fairly close in age, means that they are a stark example of the saying.

I wish Harry would stop yapping on about his experience though whilst simultaneously saying he wants privacy and to focus on philanthropy.

Upsidedownagain · 27/10/2022 18:16

As a title I thinks it's quite clever and witty. But I am fed up with his continual whining and constantly putting himself and his spouse/ family in the public eye, despite having made a considered decision to opt out of the role he was born into.

I'm sure he has his grievances and no one deserves to lose their mother as he did, aged 12, but the hard-done-by message has been coming across loud and clear for ages.

He'd do better to move on with his life and leave his royal connections behind him, as he claims to desire. (Leaving aside private family matters, which we don't need to know about.)

Pinpot · 27/10/2022 18:16

Me too OP. I don't have a beef with Harry and I get that he's had some tough challenges. But he is also unbelievably privileged. In fact he could just as easily have called his book 'unbelievably privileged'

Laiste · 27/10/2022 18:18

The fluffy cloud behind the words on the cover that happens to match his hair colour and happens to sit over his disappearing hair line ... 😂

FlorettaB · 27/10/2022 18:20

Like him or dislike him, The Spare is exactly what he was.

But he's not married to Megan Me Me Me Me Marbles is he

I think her influence on him is immense and it’s played a role into how he is behaving now.

Her shamelessly self absorbed Mandela comment (people in South Africa celebrating their wedding in a manner like when Mandela was released), he too is now showing plenty of me me me signs.

I dislike her because she’s got a horrible personality. To throw an entire race under the bus in her podcast (broadcast on the Lorraine show) when she was an ugly duckling with “frizzy hair and a gap in the teeth”...frizzy hair being an African feature...yeah straighten it to European standards kids and you won’t be ugly.

Harry was such an admirable, likeable young man before he met that ghastly American woman. He served his country with distinction and he did great work with his charities. She got into his head, alienated him from his family & friends, manipulated him and convinced him that his privileged position was a form of victimhood. She has a lot to answer for.

SandyY2K · 27/10/2022 18:22

I see nothing wrong with him writing this book and it's well known that he is or was the spare to the heir. That was Diana's duty... to produce an heir and a spare or more

It's his life. He can write a book if he wants and if you don't want to read it, then don't. Plenty people will buy and read it. I'm sure he won't lose any sleep over your thoughts about his life.

And Lo! the world’s tiniest violin hath landed in my lap.

What an utter knob.

Harry & Meghan will be divorced within 5 years. Meghan will pursue a very high profile career in politics (Secretary of State Markle, anyone? Anyone?) based very much on her ex-royalness. Harry will slink home and live out the rest of a wasted life in the Shires, drinking too much and riddled with self pity.

I can see Harry back in the Cotswolds, Hunting and playing Polo with a down to Earth woman.
Camilla has grown in my estimation over the years-
A great pity Charles was not “ Allowed” to marry Camilla from the outset.
Diana was cruelly used in that regard.
” Tampongate” just showed how absolutely suited Charles and Camilla are-
Slightly silly humour, and an easy way of being with each other- Even down to liking same radio 4 shows.

Do agree with you there.
Estranged from her own family, seeking to separate Harry from his own family.
Divide and rule.

LearnerCook · 27/10/2022 18:28

The people of this country loved him to bits and never thought of him as a spare. Until he started to show his true colours, or at least until the Palace stopped covering for him.

Playing the self-pitying victim all the time isn't endearing. It's childish and beyond crass when he's had, and continues to have, such a privileged life.

Yep. It’s the classic abuser playbook.

YourTruthorMine · 27/10/2022 18:31

I am sorry, but if you have a Prince Title, you shouldn't be using it for commecial purposes, and yes I realise other members of the RF have done similar. Either do your Royal duties or STFU.

BretonBlue · 27/10/2022 18:32

It is a fantastic title and there have been people discussing it on every social media platform I’ve looked at this evening. In fact as a first post and no return from OP after 339 posts on the topic I wonder if this might also be a clever bit of marketing… Welcome to MN and all that, OP.

LondonWolf · 27/10/2022 18:33

He could have stayed as Captain and done a desk job London based, he didn't need to move up the ranks.

Maybe, but was/is Harry a desk job kind of man? And imagine what the media would have made of that, sly digs about desk jobs and not actually soldiering. I'm ex army, such types are there for a steady, secure pay check which Harry didn't need. What is in that for him? Sat behind a desk for years, curtailed by the rules and regs of the army.

Inkanta · 27/10/2022 18:34

Glad to hear he's telling his own story. Can't wait to read it!

Wombatbum · 27/10/2022 18:34

love it, ridiculous how royalists hate him so much 🙄

GoTeamRocket · 27/10/2022 18:40

The title is brilliant in one way but also just shit.

He seems to be the royal version of an x-factor contest who sobs on demand to get into the next round.

ThighMistress · 27/10/2022 18:40

Has anyone mentioned that Andrew was once the spare (Princess Anne behind boys at that time) ?!

In all aristocratic families first-born takes all. It used to be the case that no. 1 got the stately home, estate and title, no. 2 went into the Army and no. 3 had to enter the church (and heaven help the daughters if they couldn’t bag a toff).

If Harry knows anything of history he would know that he would keep slipping down the pecking order, but would be able to live a life of immense privilege nonetheless.

Furthermore, how does complaining about being the “spare” square up with wanting to “find freedom” and privacy? Confused So if he were not the spare he’d enjoy the limelight? Hmmmph.

EsmaCannonball · 27/10/2022 18:46

I'm not a royalist, but Harry is. He's never spoken out about the concept of monarchy or inherited wealth and status, just boo-hooed about not getting his own way all the time. He liked all the wealth and the privilege and the glamour and the getting everything handed to him on a plate. He didn't like all the boring bits and the scrutiny of his often questionable behaviour. He should try being the second-born in a family that's got to use warm banks and community kitchens this winter.

ReneBumsWombats · 27/10/2022 18:47

It's probably easier to handle being the spare when there are two other spares as well.

Coucous · 27/10/2022 18:47

Alighttouchonthetiller · 27/10/2022 17:37

It’s not, though. They were the heirs. They needed ‘training’ and to be party to discussions about future plans.

Of they did. I just read that She was the last Empress of India 😂😂 😂 😂
Really couldn't make this stuff up. No wonder there are books being written and TV series

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 27/10/2022 18:50

You are so right.

slowquickstep · 27/10/2022 18:50

I hope i am around when Archie writes a book complaining about his childhood and the parents that were so controlling.
