Is a climbing wall fun for one child?

That really. I've never done a climbing wall and don't intend to. My 12yr son has done one a few times with various clubs and wants to do it again however it would be by himself and I'm concerned he would be disappointed that it's not so much fun. He's not a serious rock climber or anything like that.

I’ve taken my son to clip n climb loads of times, it’s brilliant, I sit having coffee and watching while he zooms around on his own.

Check with the centre but if he can climb alone just let him do what he wants to do!

My son always used to climb by himself and I would spot. Bouldering is climbing shorter walls without ropes and is great fun.
climbers are usually really welcoming and social, I’m sure he would find people would help or offer advice if he struggles. If he wants to climb ropes you’ll need to be signed off to belay him or he will need to go with an instructor.
many of the bigger walls will offer NICAS clubs which are a great cheap way of learning how to Boulder and rope climb with other kids.

Normally you have to book on a group session where an instructor will oversee.

He can't just turn up and climb at most places.

It's not being by himself, which is fine, but whether it's actually possible

Ha! As you can see I've no idea what I'm talking about which is why I asked. It's definately a clip and climb though.

If its clip and climb, I'd just call and check their requirements.

Climbing can be fun on your own, provided no belayer needed etc.

He will be fine. My dd has done it on her own before - they usually make up a group of 4 or 6 and so they're not really on their own. If he wants to do I'd say go for it.

Is a clip and climb fun by yourself? He's done it before but with other people, never by himself. I'm happy to shout encouragement from the bottom. 🤣 I just wondered if it's a bit boring without the competitiveness (for want of a better word).

Sorry just seen its a clip and climb.

They are great and no problem by himself.

You won't have to do anything but can just sit and watch

Notjusta · 27/10/2022 08:45

If it's like Rock Box or similar then yes I think it will be fine for him to do in his own. You can be there and encourage him and talk to him about what he's doing. When I've taken kids the staff have been lovely and really encouraging and advising on technique etc. If he's been before, he's choosing it in the knowledge of what it's like. Go for it it - I hope he has a lovely time 🙂

Squeezedsquash · 27/10/2022 08:46

All my children have done it by theirselves before. It’s great. You might need to be a cheering squad from the bottom and/or encourage him on to harder routes. Hope he enjoys himself.

McConkeysPlate · 27/10/2022 08:46

He will have a blast.

RealBecca · 27/10/2022 08:46

Just stop worrying, he likes climbing and wants to go so dont put a blocker on it!

Patchoomi · 27/10/2022 09:01

@RealBecca it's expensive and I don't want him to be disappointed in the treat if it's definately something he won't like.

Thanks all I will book it.

My 7 year old does clip n climb on her own, he’ll be fine.

megletthesecond · 27/10/2022 09:09

With clip n climb you're mainly challenging yourself. There's sometimes a couple of identical racing walls but apart from that it's fine alone. I love doing it until I get too high and scared of heights.

WonderingWanda · 27/10/2022 09:20

He will enjoy it, especially of you are around encouraging him and taking the odd video. Climbing is great fun and challenging for kids.
