Confused about pregnancy test

TeddyisMydog · 26/10/2022 18:41

(Posting here as the pregnancy board can be quiet)

So I had a positive test last Thursday, tested the same night, with a different brand but using the same pee and imagine my surprise when it was negative.
Took a further 2 tests, different brands to the first test and still negative.
Used the same brand as the positive from last week, still positive

What the heck is going on

How quickly did the line come up? Are the tests in date?

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 26/10/2022 20:51

A positive is a positive. Perhaps try a digital one for sure

Not sure it’s fair for posters to be giving false hope here tbh

her period is a week late, lines should be so much stronger than that if it’s still positive and not a chemical

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 26/10/2022 21:09

@OnomatopoeiaFlea not necessarily false hope.

Could be that ovulation was slightly later than usual. Which would explain why the positive isn't as strong for a week late.

Could also be that the urine isn't as concentrated.

Could be a whole host of reasons why it's not a strong positive, not just a chemical pregnancy

It would be stronger line a week on than it was. And it isn’t.

I'm another who had very faint lines for over a week and it worked out. However I was convinced it was a chemical pregnancy as knew that was the most likely outcome. Everything crossed for you OP.

Taken with fmu x

It's not showing up on other brands which makes me think chemical or just dodgy FR tests
Well my cycle has always been either 29 or 30 days, August to September I had a 51 day cycle so if you by that then no I'm not late but I'm pretty sure I had the signs of ovulation about 16 days ago now.
It's been 5 weeks today since my last period

I had negatives on tests other than a first response too.

Mumonthedge · 27/10/2022 06:20

Call your doctor. I had very similar and was referred to the early pregnancy unit for a scan (you might have to wait for a week to scan though if you are 5 weeks along). They will be able to tell for definite what’s happening. I really hope you get good news 💛

DashboardConfessional · 27/10/2022 06:34

I would first of all stop testing for a few days. You have 3 positives on the tests that are the most sensitive. Digitals are among the least sensitive and different brands are unlikely to help (particularly the awful blue cross ones).

I second the advice to call the GP and see if you can be referred for a scan.

I'm sorry, limbo is horrible!

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 27/10/2022 06:41

I would be concerned that, after a week, the tests aren’t getting any darker even with fmu. I would speak to GP surgery as they may offer to check blood hCG levels 48-72 hours apart as, if it’s a viable pregnancy, they should double in that time. What would concern me is the risk of ectopic pregnancy as levels can be slow to increase with one; or, as you say, could be a chemical pregnancy. I would be less inclined to think all the FRER tests you’ve done have given you false positives as that would be very unusual!

Youdoyoutoday · 29/10/2022 00:49

How you doing? @TeddyisMydog

TeddyisMydog · 29/10/2022 08:45

Thank you very much for asking, I have one First response test left and I really refuse to buy anymore. I will give it a few more days and use it and see if it's any darker
But I do have some of the one step tests from ebay, they are 10 miu compared to FR at 6miu and I'm still getting negatives on those tests, even with using fmu so I'm thinking it's quite possibly a chemical but I would've thought with a chemical, any brand of test would be positive at first
I've had no positives except on first response 😥 x

Oh dear, can you speak to your gp?

TeddyisMydog · 29/10/2022 12:18

Okay I just took it 😂 I have no patience
It does look positive doesn't it? But not any darker

I actually think that looks a tiny bit darker…fingers crossed 🤞

DrFoxtrot · 29/10/2022 13:13

I think it looks darker too, OP. Definitely speak to your GP, we would do HCG blood tests for you.

ABJ100 · 29/10/2022 13:52

It looks darker to me too. You need to do a blood test 48hours apart. Have you tried the digital ones to see the weeks insteasing?

Youdoyoutoday · 29/10/2022 14:18

I'd say thats tad darker.

Still speak to the gp though.

Fingers crossed for you 🤞

Starryskiesinthesky · 29/10/2022 14:22

I think it looks darker which is hopeful. Hope all goes well.

Lovemylittlebear · 29/10/2022 14:29

Hate to add in any unnecessary worry but I had this happen to me 8 years ago and it turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy. Maybe worth asking epu if they will do bloods and a scan. I was confused as the tests were so faint still two weeks after my missed period and at 7 weeks I ended up finding out the bad news. I’ve had early miscarriages too those were a mix of faint or dark lines when first testing. All my children had lines that darkened. I do know some women do have faint lines and have completely normal pregnancy’s and don’t want to worry you but may be worth getting checked out just in case x

GoT1904 · 29/10/2022 14:33

The cheap strip tests are awful honestly and not as sensitive as they are advertised as being!

However I do second the requesting of bloods. I think it's better to rule out ectopic. Hope everything works out ❤️

kirinm · 29/10/2022 14:44

Sorry OP but my first thought was chemical and now perhaps you need to rule out an ectopic or pregnancy of I known location. Those two latter types of pregnancy are often diagnosed via blood tests and the hCG levels not doubling as they should. I would contact your GP or an early pregnancy unit. You'd be close to 5 weeks and they might be prepared to take bloods now.

Phrenologistsfinger · 29/10/2022 14:54

After 2 years of ttc (and 12 cycles of bfps of varying faintness/darkness across different brands) I did my own pregnancy test test using my urine after taking an IVF trigger shot (500mg of pure HCG!) and the cheapies even then were so pale, it was crazy. I think they are cheap because they use way less ink!

I also sadly agree that faint once period is late does usually indicate chemicals. I had a big difference between my 4/5 week losses and my 6 week ones for example.

Also, not sure if you are aware of the conception and infertility boards as they have many threads covering test lines and progression etc (for comparison, although comparison of bfps is of one of the darkest if dark arts so take with a pinch of salt).

W1ll0wx · 29/10/2022 15:03

I think it depends on the brand as well! I've done 3 digital clear blue all positive and 3 normal clear blue positive, all very clear and then I did a cheap one I got from Poundland or somewhere and the line was so faint you could barely see it! (And I did it first thing in the morning!)
