NHS dentists

I am terrified of dentists as I have a bad gag reflex. also I am a single mum and not been able to afford a check up for years. I managed to register with a NHS dentist due to the news of people having to pay private. Not a dentist if my choice very run down and the dentist was not very nice. I am 50 and developed a gap in my front teeth, I also have an underbite that has got a lot worse (jaw has moved) Dentist said I have gum disease, my teeth are very loose and I need a back tooth extracting. I did not let her do an x ray as too scared I would gag but I guess I need the to show the bone loss and decay.
The extraction has cost £65
She said I need to see the hygenist and have been charged £90 as a private treatment even though she recommended this as part of the treatment.
I can not afford this and just see the costs spiraling for further gum treatment, false teeth etc
I can not eat or sleep for the worry of the treatments, losing teeth and costs
I can not make ends meet with the cost of living crisis and just feel at a loss
