To ask you to admit doing the annoying things people on MN complain about?

For an anonymous internet forum, it continually strikes me as odd that people very rarely admit to engaging in the problematic or annoying behaviours complained about on here - it's always someone else doing it, apparently. Whether it's hogging the middle lane on the motorway, having kids who are out of control in public places, being a noisy neighbour or not picking up dog poo, people on MN constantly complain about these things happening around them but if no one on here admits to doing it, who are all these offenders? For example, several people in my neighbourhood are leaving their dog's poo around constantly, but when this is brought up on here every single dog owner loudly exclaims that it it's these dog owners who give them a bad name, that they never go out walking without carrying several bags for good measure! Same with bad driving - people on here love calling out driving pet peeves, but surely at least some people on here are engaging in those very same behaviours e.g. tailgating, driving too slowly or bad parking, that everyone complains about?

Are people on here just squeaky clean or in denial? I admit it, I do hog the middle lane sometimes, there you go 😬

You’re definitely going to hell.

My skin is crawling reading you trying to justify it.

I mean did you think I was the poster who hunted?? Because that was someone else, FYI. Never hunted in my life, looks cold and boring.

Animal hunting for sport is for people who just love killing to get one over the other creature. They are mainly dicks. They would probably love to kill another human but that would mean prison. Savages.

But surely bleach isn’t SHIFTING it… it’s just… well… BLEACHING it so it doesn’t LOOK like it’s there…. Bleach isn’t going to actually move anything that a good flush didn’t surely 🫤

Maybe. All I'm saying is I have only ever bleached and my toilets are spotless. As in: shiny, smooth, porcelein white surfaces all the way down. No watermarks, no staining, no 'something bleached' stuck to the surface.

I can flush = doesn't help.
I can then bleach and walk away = next time I go, the bowl is absolutely pristine.

I shall stop myself posting pictures to prove it Grin

Bleaching doesn't just make things white! It's got enzymes in it that break down organic material or something. Bleach is 100% the best toilet cleaner and also breaks down in the sewage system. Much worse things you can put down the toilet.

Well I think that’s rather a long stretch but OK.

I eat animals for my own selfish needs because they taste bloody good. I do this knowing the reality and procedures of these industries and accept my part in the cruelty. I certainly won’t be asking anyone to pass the smelling slats at the mention of anyone else complicit in the mass murder of animals for human enjoyment. I’m no better IMO than those who hunt for sport but at least I own it rather than pretending what I do is different!

JOFFCV · 27/10/2022 23:14

I'm all for bleach over toilet brushes but we have two because my DH wants them so we are a mixed household.

DdraigGoch · 27/10/2022 23:15

Iwantmyoldnameback · 26/10/2022 07:40

I have toilet brushes, a tumble dryer, (who knew that was an issue) and I'm a boomer. I also drive when I could walk and unnecessarily have my own car.

Whereas I don't own a car, which according to Mumsnet orthodoxy makes me not a proper growed-up adult. Or something.

Shock horror, last weekend my brother and I went out for a bike ride. On a road. Just for pleasure. One or two cars may even have had to wait for three seconds to pass. Mumsnet must hate me for this.

Will have to agree to disagree.

I don' get it why it is a long stretch. If you enjoy killing a living thing for fun then it is the same. The reason humans don't eat other humans is another thread. Killing fo fun though?

@nogginatemycat don't tip anyone? Ever? I always tip, even when I was a hard-up working single parent for best part of two decades. I feel bad for minimum wage earners, doing often shit jobs.

Not true.
Most of the people that are active in field sports or shooting care passionately about animals and the countryside. They tend to live among them, respect them and treat their environment with care.
There are a minority that get involved because they think it’s “elite” and these do tend to be knobs. But that’s not the norm.

@kateandme - thank you. Your post did make me smile. I love them, but the general Mumsnet consensus appears to be negative!!

Late to say this but, I too love my neighbours windchimes.

I think you should go back to the other thread about this. As others have clearly said as a customer at an establishment its not my job to deal with how much employees are paid, that's for the employee and the business in question to agree upon. Its not up to me to subsidies anyone's wages if the have a stingy boss, so get of your high horse. 🙄

Ludo19 · 28/10/2022 10:05

I own a windchime and let my cats on the worktops and eat off my plate.

pyjamafashionista · 28/10/2022 10:08

Hands up. I've left the occasional dog poop if I've forgotten to take a poop bag out with me. 🙈 I will then happily join into the chats berating people who leave 💩 about, as generally I don't (but happy to pretend the occasional one I did leave never happened) there. I said it 🤣🤣

I hope these people who are ‘disgusted’ at killing animals for sport are vegan? Otherwise if you then tucked into a ham sandwich or anything similar you’re a massive hypocrite.

No, because eating animals is very different to killing them for fun.

I don't eat meat, by the way.

Also, how many vegans have pets? Isn't that hypocritical as having pets is exploitative?

Dutchesss · 28/10/2022 10:23

I think the issue is that people are so used to eating meat that we are desensitised to what we are actually doing. We are killing animals for flavour, for taste, to enjoy our meal - which is also for enjoyment even though we are removed from the killing part. Does it make it better to kill something because we enjoy it's flavour and someone else is doing the killing?

reigatecastle · 28/10/2022 10:25

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 27/10/2022 15:24

I don’t understand middle lane huggers either and don’t get the reasoning people here have attempted about it. What’s the difference the middle lane brings you that the left lane doesn’t?

Not having to weave in and out between lorries.

I agree if the inside lane is completely empty, but people seem to think that if you stay in the middle lane for a few seconds longer than they think you should, that's middle lane hogging.

No, middle lane hogging is when you stay in the middle lane even though the inside lane is empty (and isn't disappearing as a slip road, you're not approaching a junction etc).

Why is it different - the consequences for the animal are exactly the same. Do you hmthink animals don’t mind as long as they’re being eaten afterwards?

I do think the principle of keeping pets is cruel actually. No idea if vegans keep pets but it is hypocritical yes. I mean I don’t care if people do it, I don’t care about 99% of the things other people do, but this is a discussion after all and that’s what I believe.

Yes exactly.

And not to mention animals bred for killing are kept in horrific conditions and dairy cows lead the most horrific painful lives.

Anyone who eats meat or dairy is a part of that very, very cruel industry. Just fucking own it, rather than clutching your pearls at people who do the same except it’s a quick death for an animal that’s loved a life it’s supposed to live. I don’t care if people eat meat or not but it’s the hypocrisy I can’t stand.

Apparently I’m “going to hell” for pointing it out too 😂😂😂😂

Its more nuanced than that. Killing and causing suffering for food is about more than pleasure. I am vegan and its a difficult and restrictive lifestyle. It would be even more difficult if I had certain health conditions and fewer resources. Avoiding meat and fish is easy enough, but for many people removing all dairy from their diet would come at significant cost in time, effort and potentially health.
Avoiding blood sports on the other hand is about as easy as avoiding deliberately running over dogs or drowning kittens.

Comtesse · 28/10/2022 11:43

I can’t even drive! And I don’t really care either. I know other posters think this is FEEBLE - who cares ??

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 28/10/2022 11:51

Yeah I can't drive either

Unicorn1919 · 28/10/2022 11:58

I alternate my bed linen and towels so each is only washed once a fortnight. I do have a weekly cleaner. Better for the planet and saves a lot of effort.

I don't have a bath or shower everyday. Again, better for the planet.

I go drag hunting (no foxes involved ever). I believe that eating locally produced, sustainable game, meat and dairy is better for the planet than being a vegan eating imported and manufactured global products.

I am usually an outside lane driver, way above the speed limit in my deisel 4x4 (my only eco vice but I don't drive daily). I hate middle lane hoggers and have been known to over-exagerate by moving all the way across 4 lane roads to overtake them and then cutting back in front of them all the way back to the inside lane. If you can't manouvre safely in and out of the lorries, then don't drive on a motorway. Also, I wish people would stop moving out of the inside lane for every junction - it is not necessary and those joining should be able to do so without you pulling out. There are now junctions with markings indicating that you should stay in lane precisely to stop this dangerous practice.

I enjoy having spontaneous visitors and always answer my door. My friends know they are welcome anytime.

I am now semi-retired but have had a very succesful career in investment banking. My success was in part due to my parent's network of friends in high places. I still worked bloody hard to get where I did, but am grateful for the advantages I have had in my life. Why should I be ashamed of it.

limitedperiodonly · 28/10/2022 12:01

I put my bag on the seat next to me on public transport. If someone asks me to move it and there are other seats available I wordlessly indicate them and go back to reading my book.

FortunesFavour · 28/10/2022 12:14

That’s not really so annoying though @limitedperiodonly because I’d quite enjoy dumping your bag on the floor and deliberately sitting in that seat just to wind you up for being such an arse.
