to ask for your help with identifying this bug from my Mum's kitchen cupboard?!

Unfortunately I have eaten half a chocolate bar which I strongly suspect contains these bugs as several of them fell out of the wrapper after I had already eaten half 🥴

I would be grateful if someone can help me to identify them so that we can know how to go about getting rid of them!

Thanks

Probably need a close up. Most likely a weevil.

Jmoon126 · 24/10/2022 21:59

Ah I thought I had posted a close up sorry! Will post one now :)

I was going to say a weevil. They can live in bags of flour etc.

How horrible for you 😬

Jmoon126 · 24/10/2022 22:03

Yes @HangOnToYourself -- I feel extremely nauseous 😭

I have just been viewing a webpage that I found on google showing 5 different types of common kitchen cupboard and larder insects -- one suggestion is tiny cockroaches, and so now I feel utterly horrified!!! I am not certain they are weevils because the antenna look different?

Yes would definitely say weevils.

Basically your mum just needs to throw out any packets that they could be living in and give the cupboards a thorough cleaning. Then keep everything in air tight jars in future.

Applesandcarrots · 24/10/2022 22:04

Well now it's not just a big standard chocolate bit chocolate flavoured protein bar😁

Okay. I will get to work on this. Thank you for your help @BettyOBarley !

I have noticed silverfish in the bathroom too so that's also on the agenda. Sigh!

It’s a sawtoothed grain beetle according to my insect app!
they love chocolate

Ah yes I think you are right! I have had a quick google and they do look like that. Thank you!

You're welcome!
My parents had them once in their pantry, living in an old bag of flour... horrible things (especially falling out of your chocolate 🤢) but not too hard to get rid of I don't think.

Not too sure about getting rid of silverfish, I know they love damp.

Seasilverdollar · 24/10/2022 22:10

It’s a psocid or booklice. Not an actual lice though just it’s name. It won’t bite or spread disease. They are relatively harmless just not fun to find. They feed on microscopic mould. Will be found on paper, wood (shelves) etc and in flour. They like slightly damp, dark conditions. Need to ventilate and dry out area where they are to get rid.

RudsyFarmer · 24/10/2022 22:12

Good protein. I wouldn’t get too upset about it. They used to just sieve the insects out the flour in the old days and cook the others alongside the food.

Unforgettablefire · 24/10/2022 22:16

It's a weevil. I brought these home in a bag of flour from Aldi.
I opened the bag and it was alive so I chucked it out. Checked a packet of semolina and that was alive too, only smaller ones, they kept playing dead when the packet was moved then moving about again after about 20 seconds.
I threw everything out in the cupboards, even tinned and jars because they eat the glue in the paper that's on them and live there too. They will eat anything but prefer dried food. Rice, pasta, flour, biscuits all that kind of stuff.
You need to completely gut the cupboard and bleach the whole thing, get into all the little cracks in the cupboards where they hide, and keep the cupboard empty for a week or so to watch for eggs hatching that's been missed.

Seasilverdollar · 24/10/2022 22:18

Ooops stand corrected saw toothed grain beetle it is🤣

Pixiedust1234 · 24/10/2022 22:18

I would have said weevil too but you've identified it. Most bugs like the flour and cereals so make sure they are always in airtight containers.

Im now wondering if you had permission to snaffle or whether your mother had boobytrapped her secret stash 🤔

Unforgettablefire · 24/10/2022 22:22

Actually it looks long and skinny in the body for a weevil. Just saw your update I don't know what a saw toothed grain beetle is but it sounds similar. Not good to find in your cupboards 😉

Applesandcarrots · 24/10/2022 22:24

You could try deepfrying them..

I agree eith others about the weevil
