How do you pronounce medicine?

In AIBU because handy poll function.
In DD's english (as a foreign language) lesson she was told that medicine is pronounced med-sin, with no i sound in the middle but I have never heard anyone say it like that. So how do you pronounce medicine?
YABU = med-sin
YANBU = med-i-sin/med-e-sin (not really sure how to write out that pronunciation)

Oh the Bloody Mary Poppins song is in my head now. FFS.

Thanks, mine too now 😒

Though at least it might displace God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman which has been cycling round for the last two hours.

Brufen is just the brand name, like Calpol or Panadol.

I know but it still just sounds so snooty 😄

oopsfellover · 24/10/2022 18:10

Meddy - sun

Paris2023 · 24/10/2022 18:11

Med-sun and garridge for gaaahraaahge

Natsku · 24/10/2022 19:07

Well this has been helpful. Now I know her textbook wasn't wrong, but not completely right either, as most people say it with three syllables. And now I've said medicine in my head so many times I'm not even sure how I pronounce it any more.

Gah. I’ve just remembered that Mary Poppins also stuck an extra syllable in “chimney”.

stevalnamechanger · 24/10/2022 23:26

1 sounds northern English one is southern English 😂😂

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 24/10/2022 23:28

As long as it's not chimbley 😐

GoldenHue · 24/10/2022 23:44

Only just realised that I have pronounced it both ways, something of which until today, I’ve never thought about! 😱

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 25/10/2022 00:09

Medisuhn
Garridge at home,
Gararjz where I take my car to be fixed Confused I don’t know why they’re different to me!
Chocluht

Choclit is on par with calling a hospital ‘hospickle’ to me. 🤬

East Midlands/central and not posh, but consider myself reasonably well spoken, if that helps!

ReadtheReviews · 25/10/2022 19:56

Funnu that choclit is mostly voted as common on here, when it's the poshest people i know who use it. Medsun definitely posher. But also irritating. The same people I know also say Flars and Yars for flowers and years.

SpringIntoChaos · 25/10/2022 20:22

Oh wow...I've just sat here and said this word out loud about 5 times now 🤣🤣🤣

I'm from Cheshire in the UK (north west-ish but don't really have much of an accent due to military upbringing).

Here's how it came out: med-sin.

However, if you'd just asked me and I'd not said it out loud first, I'd absolutely have 'thought' that I'd have pronounced the 'i' in the middle! How weird...I don't!! I'm actually really surprised at this 🤣🤣🤣

SpringIntoChaos · 25/10/2022 20:26

God...now I'm doing garage and chocolate!

Ga-rrige

Cho-cluht

🤷‍♀️

NeelyOHara1 · 25/10/2022 20:30

Ha, and suit as in sooot or seeyuit ;)

littlepeas · 25/10/2022 20:32

Med-sun!

littlepeas · 25/10/2022 20:39

littlepeas · 25/10/2022 20:32

Med-sun!

Should elaborate - one Welsh accented parent, one RP parent and have lived in the South East and the midlands. Have a mostly neutral accent but occasionally sound a bit welsh. Think both parents said med-sun.

steff13 · 25/10/2022 20:48

I'm in the US, and I say it with 3 syllables, "med-i-sin."

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 25/10/2022 21:08

Med-i-sn. I think. I'm not sure anymore!

Slightly concerned about 'miss-cheef' though - am I (and everyone I know) saying that wrong?!
