How do you pronounce medicine?

In AIBU because handy poll function.
In DD's english (as a foreign language) lesson she was told that medicine is pronounced med-sin, with no i sound in the middle but I have never heard anyone say it like that. So how do you pronounce medicine?
YABU = med-sin
YANBU = med-i-sin/med-e-sin (not really sure how to write out that pronunciation)

The second option. Med-sin makes me want to throw things

That's how I felt when DD told me this, I started to rant about the textbook being wrong but then I thought wait, maybe I'm wrong, better ask mumsnet Grin

I pronounce it med-I-sun. How would medicinal be pronounced? It needs the "i" in there!!

I've just asked myself the question and realised that when I say it in the context of the study of, I say med-sin, but if I say it in the context of taking some, I say med-i-sin. Utterly bizarre and illogical! 😵‍💫🤣

Me too!

maddiemookins16mum · 24/10/2022 16:37

Medicinal is different again because then you separate the me from the d so meh-dis-i-nal. Bloody English, why can't it be simple?

Garrige

Thank you, I am confused as how a previous p thinks that is incorrect so wondered how else it could be pronounced other than ga raj which would sound american.

ScreamingInfidelities · 24/10/2022 16:39

I’m from Glasgow for reference.

Medicine is med-i-sin
Chocolate I’d choc-lit
Garage is ga-ridge

Augend23 · 24/10/2022 16:39

Med-sun but the u in sun is not like "the sun is in the sky" it's more like the last vowel in "teacher" or "creature"

Could also be med-i-sun with the sun pronounced as above.

Mueslikid · 24/10/2022 16:39

Med-snn

ShutYerYapAndGetOnWithIt · 24/10/2022 16:40

I probably pronounce them both ways (see also 'been' - bin/been).

In my head it's med-i-sin but I'm sure I've said medsin out loud in the past.

Same, when I say it as one word it’s ‘med-i-sin’ but in a sentence it sounds more like medsin. The I is barely there. I also say bin rather than been though and garridge not gararje.

AMessageToYouRuby · 24/10/2022 16:41

Med-sin, but I'm mn scum, because I do also say choc-lit, and I have a cockney accent. Fackin 'ell, I'm rough

@ZeroFuchsGiven I say ga-ridge, rhymes with carriage.

WooWoox2 · 24/10/2022 16:41

Med-e-cin

JFDIYOLO · 24/10/2022 16:42

Medsun is posh pronounciation for the profession. She's reading Medsun at (insert college).

What’s the other way of pronouncing chocolate? Do some people pronounce the O?
