One Call Insurance are S***

They should call themselves- no call insurance. They have no phone numbers anymore apart from claim line that's not even them but another company. By chat (bot) I want to add a learner to my car insurance, told I can't because they don't cover learner drivers. I can get cover, just for the learner from RAC (searching last night). One call have said I can't get this though, not allowed for some reason. I can get the learner cover through their partner company, Marmalade, this is twice the price of RAC though.

Does anyone know if this is correct and I can't get the learner their own insurance through RAC? Its basically the same insurance Marmalade offer.
My AIBU is One Call are shit for not having a phone line to speak to someone about it.

Oh good, 100% agreement (by me) they are shit.

Anyone know if they can ban my learner from getting their own insurance with RAC?

I am not an expert, but I don’t think the learner can get insurance on somebody else’s car without the owner being on the policy. Try doing a dummy quote on RAC and see if it lets you do this.

There are quite a few companies online were you can just insure the learner, giving them their own separate insurance to the car owner. You can specify the length of time this insurance lasts from one day upwards. The RAC policy was like this, as was Marmalade, One Call, my insurer, said I am only allowed to get the learner insured with. Marmalade.

Insurance companies are completely entitled to cover whoever they choose depending on their risk appetite. They also cut costs (and make your premiums cheaper) by not having call centres and doing everything online. If you don't like it, go and insure with someone else.

Are you wanting to insure the learner as a named driver on your policy or set up a policy for the learner?

if the first you can do this on most policies but one call won't - they don't like learner drivers or new drivers.

if its the second then there are lots of insurers that you can set up a policy with - however, they can't have a policy of their own on a car thats already insured under someone elses name

Ok, after spending what has felt like the whole day typing, including a 1.25 hour live chat just earlier, they have now said my daughter can get the learner RAC policy. This was after two different chats of them saying she couldn't and that if I got her that they would cancel my policy. I explained, very clearly, right at the start, that this would be her own policy, designed to sit alongside a normal annual policy on the named driver and keepers car. It was exactly the same as the Marmalade policy they said I could have.

They have apologised but I'm still pissed off about the length of time it took and the false information. It's half term, I could have taken her our for good practice today, instead, I was huddled over a tablet, getting cut off all the time. They said they'd send me a transcript of the chat (no sign yet). When I get it, I'm going to write and complain. I'm also going to send it to RAC so they know One Call are telling their customers they will cancel their policies if they get this insurance from them. Obviously, I don't expect anything to come of either letter, but it'll make me feel better to have complained.

I've gone back to high street insurance companies. Its brilliant, you get to sit opposite a human and talk and stuff 😀

Online insurance companies seem to do nothing but hide from their customers.
