Solid oak extending table with 4 chairs. Original price £1500, only used 6 months and has been wrapped in storage since. Immaculate condition with no marks/wear and tear.

What would you deem a reasonable price for it secondhand?

Looks similar to this picture but plain grey chairs in the same style

@MrsMontyD - they are based on the Eames dining chair. I’d say they were a pretty classic design. I am not the biggest fan but that’s more of a comfort issue.

Yes, very similar, they go very well in my kitchen diner with a habitat pedestal table. I find them very comfortable.

I saw this one on Facebook Marketplace.

£240?! Bargain!

This makes me more offended by people saying mine isn't even worth £200 🤣

My starting point is 50% off for anything second hand, even if basically brand new.

That said I recently paid 90% of a new price for something that you can no longer buy new, and I often pay 66% of a new price for things that are highly desirable an in near-perfect condition.

But for large items like this that few people can store it really is a question of best offer gets it. We paid around £300 or £350 for our dining room table and chairs, and that included delivery from 70 miles away. Ours were mid 20th century antiques, in superb condition and, IMHO, much nicer than yours.

I'd be astonished if they were worth more than £500, and if you advertise them on gumtree and facebook for a month and your best offer is £100 then bite their hands off.

This may help -- you would get better prices somewhere like Vinterior than you would on FB marketplace or Ebay but I am not sure if individuals can sell on there.

HauntedCabinet · 24/10/2022 16:12

As others have said, 2nd hand furniture is basically only worth what you can convince someone to pay for it.

If they wanted this specific set already, had already throught about paying £1500 for it brand new and then saw your set for £1000 they may snap it up. But the chances are slim you and this mythical person will find each other.

So then you're left with people who would already be compromising by buying your table, because it's not their first choice of design and it's not new. And also needs to arrange delivery (presumably). In that scenario, the value drops massively.

£200-300 ish seems about right. They will then need to pay more for delivery, a man and a van over any distance is likely to be around £100.

£300-400 for a 2nd hand table with no gurantee, limited comeback if it falls apart after 6 months, is not your first choice, and you have to organise the delivery yourself. It's actually already quite a lot of money to gamble on the table working out for the buyer.

Correct, haven't had an offer of £900. It's less than £900 but more than what people have been putting here in terms of £100-300.

You said "A colleague at work is interested in it and has offered near what I was looking for it"

Bite their arms off if you can do so without feeling massively guilty for ripping them off! Though saying that I'm not sure I believe you...

For £1000 you can buy that exact set, 4 chairs, brand new

www.luxushomeandgarden.com/products/st-andrews-dining-set-table-with-4-grey-tartan-dining-chairs?variant=37245948756148

If you've been even offered half of that, I think you're doing very well. (Considering all my points above about not being delivered, no guarantee etc).

CinnamonSwirl82 · 24/10/2022 16:17

I've found someone who was looking for a table just like it.

They were going to buy similar, and can only find prices between £1,500-£2,500 for brand new but I just feel like selling it to them for a couple hundred ££ would be them taking advantage if they were just about to spend upwards of £1500 on one anyway.

Riverlee · 24/10/2022 16:17

A lot of shops sell new stuff in the sales half price, so that would be my maximum price, then I would discount it further. Maybe £350.

@HauntedCabinet no you can't - sold out and normal price is £2,400

Yes 😂 £6,500 for one of them and I feel it would be best suited in a GOT counsel meeting room

...and that one's with 6 chairs.

Happycow · 24/10/2022 13:33

Im in a similar predicament- i have an almost identical set and would like to replace for several reasons, but the amount id get for my set will barely get me 2 new chairs, never mind table and 6 chairs!

I mean... why would you think the price of a second hand set would buy you a brand new full set? That's not really how it works

CinnamonSwirl82 · 24/10/2022 16:23

@HauntedCabinet Also, it isn't that set. I showed that for the chair style (not pattern) as I've said several times above...

Gosh those are low amounts. It's brand new. £1200-£1400 is a lot of money to lose...

I was thinking I was being unreasonable for expecting £900 for it (not FB marketplace, etc) from a mate. I guess I am! I'd rather keep it in storage than sell it for £150 😕

The only problem is, it’s not going to go up in value in storage, and storage will cost you actual money as well. It wouldn’t surprise me if it cost £25/50 a month to store a large table and chairs, so that could be a minimum of £300 a year to keep something that’s not worth that much. I understand not wanting to crystallise a ‘loss’, but the £1,400 is gone and if you’re not careful it’ll be a couple of years and another £600 before you do actual get rid of it because you realise storage isn’t worth the money!! By which point you’ve ‘lost’ £2,000…

Fair enough. I was trying to help here. Charge what you like - no skin off mine.

CinnamonSwirl82 · 24/10/2022 16:26

I'm storing it at home I'm not paying storage. It isn't costing me anything keeping it...

I sold my mum and dads solid oak 6 seater dining table and solid oak sideboard for them for £350 3 years ago. The chairs were real leather too. Not a pinch of what they paid but glad to get something for it when the moves house and required something smaller.

Whistlesandbell · 24/10/2022 16:33

If you sold it to your friend for let’s say £400 maybe you could use some of the money to plant a tree or bush or buy a bench in your new garden to honour your DF.

StoneofDestiny · 24/10/2022 16:36

There really isn't much money to be got for second hand furniture, even if virtually new.

Pinkcadillac · 24/10/2022 16:43

I’d keep the table and sell the chairs.
