What would you expect to pay for this?

Solid oak extending table with 4 chairs. Original price £1500, only used 6 months and has been wrapped in storage since. Immaculate condition with no marks/wear and tear.

What would you deem a reasonable price for it secondhand?

Looks similar to this picture but plain grey chairs in the same style

What would you expect to pay for this?

I think something more like this is fashionable at the moment, though I certainly don't think the OPs one is old fashioned or out of place - most people still have wooden dining tables!

I agree with this. Sorry OP I think you will struggle to get more than £200 for it. I wouldn’t pay storage fees, you’d probably pay more in a year than you would lose in selling for £200.

Definitely not throwing it away. Selling it for £100 would feel like throwing it away for me. I am most definitely not going to chuck it out.

I'm not paying storage for it. I've got it at my current home wrapped in protective sheeting so it doesn't get dusty/scratched.

It was used for 6 months. Very minimal usage, always had protection on it. No scratches, dents, marks, discolouration, etc.

It's not the exact table & chair set in the photo. The chairs are a similar shape but are not that pattern. They are light plain grey and very modern looking. The table is a similar style.

I was hoping for at least £800-900 for it. I'm not selling on market place, Gumtree or any other site where people go for secondhand bargains. I'm looking privately for someone who is wanting that kind of style. A colleague at work is interested in it and has offered near what I was looking for it, but just wanted to know if I was being unreasonable asking for that price and whether it would be worth accepting their offer or if they're being cheeky.

Anything near the half price mark I'd take the offer

Laiste · 24/10/2022 14:47

There is a lot of new/good as new furniture available at the mo. due to folks downsizing, trying to make a few quid OR, in the case of the chairs i'm gradually collecting, ordering online and not checking sizes properly.

I've bought 2 beautiful matching chairs (2 separate sellers) at a fraction of the still current price in store. In both cases the sellers were selling as the style of chair took up too much room once in their own house and a few months down the line have admitted defeat.

As pp said, if people were happy to spend a 'nearly new' price they'd buy new.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 24/10/2022 14:51

OP, go with the offer you got if it’s anywhere near what you are thinking. You’ll not a better offer.

LookItsMeAgain · 24/10/2022 14:52

I'd have said about £500 (maximum) would be what I'd spend on that second hand.
There is an extendable table in Ikea for about £220 and you could get 4 of these for £200:
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/kaettil-chair-white-knisa-light-grey-30500341/

Your table however, if it is the same as the one in that picture looks more sturdy than the one in Ikea and your chairs are probably of a heavier quality to the one I selected and it's that (the robustness of your furniture) that I would be willing to spend the extra on.

Good luck to you if you get close to your asking price.

LittlePinkBalloon · 24/10/2022 14:52

Tops £300. Secondhand marketplace for tables isn’t that great.

LoraOldSpot · 24/10/2022 14:52

We’re selling something exactly like this in the next week or so and thinking £150-£200

DoubleBuggyDriver · 24/10/2022 14:52

If your colleague has offered an amount that is close to what you want then just sell it to them? I doubt you’ll get more than 200/300 for it. People don’t want to buy close to the amount you bought it for otherwise they’d just try and buy it themselves

Fink · 24/10/2022 14:52

I don't see what the problem is: you want a certain amount for it and you have a buyer willing to pay near that amount. It is well over the going rate, but that's immaterial, if you've arranged it between the two of you then sell it for that and be grateful that you didn't try to sell it on the open market.

Givenuptotally · 24/10/2022 14:53

Whack it on marketplace at the price you want for it. You might get lucky.

I would caution about the cost of keeping it in storage - it’ll cost you and at what point will it have cost you the same price again? All the time going further and further out of fashion.,,,

cut your losses.

bewarethetides · 24/10/2022 14:54

I'd accept your friend's offer and be done with it.

AloysiusBear · 24/10/2022 14:55

Heavy furniture is difficult to move & does not hold value.

If you are lucky and prepared to wait/pay ebay fees you might get 500 at a push, probably more like 300.

AloysiusBear · 24/10/2022 14:57

Gosh those are low amounts. It's brand new. £1200-£1400 is a lot of money to lose...

No, its second hand, and whoever buys it from you won't have warranties etc.

Its not worth an amount now because you paid that for it. Its worth what the market is willing to pay, which is generally not high.

Weirdlynormal · 24/10/2022 14:58

I often see things advertised at 3/4 of the original purchase price and think people are crazy with their expectations. Unfortunately unless you happen upon someone that was just about to buy this set brand new, then few things hold their value.

mewkins · 24/10/2022 15:01

OhFatty · 24/10/2022 14:08

The trouble is so many houses don’t have dining rooms, and your table is just too big for a kitchen/dining room

This is the problem. If the table is too big for your new house then it's also going to be too big for many houses. Weirdly a smaller table using significantly less oak would probably get more and be easier to sell. Also anything scandi or mid century modern in style will sell better.

AmberGer · 24/10/2022 15:05

Definitely lower your expectations.

I bought a 3 seater and a 2 seater Italian (Bardi) buffalo leather sofas that were 18 months old, barely used, both for £280 on ebay.
They were 3k brand new.

Whistlesandbell · 24/10/2022 15:05

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles
wow that really was a cross post. Great minds and all that.

Isaidnoalready · 24/10/2022 15:07

Go on ebay gumtree etc see if you can find comparable ones for sale or sold and note the prices

CarefreeMe · 24/10/2022 15:08

If you’ve got someone wanting to buy it off you then accept their offer.

If you think their offer is too high then say you’ll lower it as they are a friend.

CinnamonSwirl82 · 24/10/2022 13:16

I was thinking I was being unreasonable for expecting £900 for it (not FB marketplace, etc) from a mate. I guess I am! I'd rather keep it in storage than sell it for £150 😕

It’s not brand new though is it. It’s second hand. If someone has 800-1000 quid to spend on a table they aren’t buying it second hand.

Shhhdontsay · 24/10/2022 15:10

Just to throw my tuppence ha’penny into to the mix, I had a bespoke, solid oak table made for me. 100cm x 240cm and it cost £900. Made exactly to my design and with a really thick top. So unless your table is exactly what someone is looking for, I think your expectations might be a bit high.

girlmom21 · 24/10/2022 15:10

Oh if someone's willing to pay that much for it then absolutely sell it. As another poster said, it's worth what the market is willing to pay.

knittingaddict · 24/10/2022 15:11

We've just given away an immaculate country pine corner cupboard and shelves. We didn't have people beating down our door to take it for free either. It was obviously because it's dated and not a desirable item any more.

I think that style of table and chairs is a bit dated now. People seem to like the mid century style these days. I know I do.

Would you be willing to say the company you got it from, here or in a DM? I am looking for an oak table and can’t find a style I like anywhere.
