Solid oak extending table with 4 chairs. Original price £1500, only used 6 months and has been wrapped in storage since. Immaculate condition with no marks/wear and tear.

What would you deem a reasonable price for it secondhand?

Looks similar to this picture but plain grey chairs in the same style

What would you expect to pay for this?

Paying for storage for a table that you might give to your own children when they move out is crazy!

Storage costs £23 a cubic meter a year on average.

So that's say £30 per pair of chairs if the legs come off.

Every year.

Until one of her children moves out and has a home big enough for this table.

CinnamonSwirl82 · 24/10/2022 15:43

Also don't have kids so can't pass it down.

I am also curious about the fashionable dining sets.

Fink · 24/10/2022 15:44

Could you not use it as something else, if you can't use it as a dining table right now? Would it be a good sewing table (with protection), desk, spare table in the dining room (e.g. we have something that looks similar, albeit smaller, which we use for keeping glasses, spare plates etc. on during big meals)? I'd get rid of the chairs though, dining chairs really don't have any other use.

MrsWarboysHandGrenade · 24/10/2022 15:46

I’ve bought and sold loads a bit from Facebook Marketplace and while it’s a shame, large pieces of furniture just never sell if they’re priced at what should be a ‘reasonable’ amount. People want free or cheap. I often see massive sofas and large oak units priced at £400-£500 and then reduced as no one’s bought them. Most people have to hire a van, which can be a faff and expensive, or a man with van, which can also be a faff. There’s also the risk that if something was wrong with it (absolutely not saying that’s the case with yours OP) you’ve got no way of returning anything.

Could you see if there’s a specialist oak furniture seller near you? You might get more for it that way.

Mapleapple · 24/10/2022 15:47

I like the idea that a PP suggested of getting a furniture maker to use the wood to make something more suitable for your house. I think that would be a lovely way to solve your space issue and honour your Dad’s gift. Maybe a nice coffee table to go with your new sofa in the kitchen and some side tables? Would be costly but you could keep them forever.

crostina1 · 24/10/2022 15:48

@ToadSmall.

It depends how old the DC are. If they are in uni etc I think it’s worth it. Or even if there’s a niece or nephew getting their own place soon. I just think OP would feel better gifting it to somebody she cares for rather (she could even still ask for a couple of hundred) rather than selling it to a random for pennies.

LittleBrenda · 24/10/2022 15:48

Would rather use the spare space to put a sofa there instead.

So you could fit it in but you don't want to.

And you would sell it if you could get almost what you paid for it?

Fiddledeedeeee · 24/10/2022 15:48

You might get a bit more in the run up to Christmas maybe, when people are getting ready to host? I know I’ve looked for extending tables at this time of year.
I wouldn’t have thought more than £400 all in though.

WombatChocolate · 24/10/2022 15:48

Second hand furniture rarely goes for much. People want to get rid of it to make way for something else usually, ir because they are downsizing.

It doesn’t hold its value unless it’s antique.

But second hand furniture is good value…I’d always look at anything I’d seen new , secondhand or refurbished or being sold by one of those sites that sells returned items.

Often almost new furniture goes for £100 or the minimum 99p.

Not what you want to hear OP, but that’s the reality.

Loook at buying whatever you fancy to replace it second hand and get yourself a bargain too.

My dd is at university but I still think she's a decade away from wanting a six seater dining room table.

cushioncovers · 24/10/2022 15:50

Just outside Bristol here and fb market place is awash with this sort of thing for sale. People would have to have access to a van and at least two people to collect it. Unless you offered to deliver it? I'd say maximum of £200.

MrsMontyD · 24/10/2022 15:50

Are my Habitat Jerry chairs still reasonably fashionable then?

CinnamonSwirl82 · 24/10/2022 15:51

I'm starting to think I'm old fashioned (or just old) enjoying rustic furniture! Even my living room stuff is oak 😬 thanks, guys...

Mapleapple · 24/10/2022 15:52

@MrsMontyD - they are based on the Eames dining chair. I’d say they were a pretty classic design. I am not the biggest fan but that’s more of a comfort issue.

TenoringBehind · 24/10/2022 15:53

My local Facebook sale/swap page is full of tables and chairs. None above £100, lots given away for free.

Hello12345678910 · 24/10/2022 15:53

I paid 100 for mine in similar condition

Pushmepullu · 24/10/2022 15:55

Don’t give it to a charity if it has sentimental value. I donated oak wooden units that were in perfect condition to a national charity, went into their shop and saw my units. The wood had been scratched badly and one of the doors had been damaged. They were asking £50. I paid £2500! I could have wept

I sold an oak dining table and 6 chairs on eBay for £350. They were considerably older than yours and very well used. Put them on eBay for a price you would like, and see how much interest there is, or find a second hand furniture shop and see what they will offer you. I think you are more likely to sell them before Christmas than after.

Epicstorm · 24/10/2022 15:55

Family member tried to sell a similar before she moved abroad temporarily. As new condition. Similar price when new. Just a few months old. Asked £350 and couldn’t sell it for anywhere near. She’s stored it in what is luckily free storage.

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 24/10/2022 13:32

You could get more for it if there was someone who was looking at buying that exact table or something similar and happens to see your posting. The chance of this happening is low but not 0 so you might as well try.

The issue with second hand sites is usually when someone is looking at buying something second hand, it's because they want something cheap. So often the budget they have is low and they don't really care about whether it's real oak or not.

I can't say I agree with this. I usually buy second hand if I can, not because I want cheap-because you can get better quality for less money, not quite the same. I'd rather have a durable oak table that's second hand than a new cheap wood mix one for the same price. Plus the environmental concerns. If I wanted cheap I'd go to IKEA or similar.

CinnamonSwirl82 · 24/10/2022 15:57

I've had a look at swaps & sales sites and I've not seen any solid oak extending tables. A lot of it is ex IKEA, Argos, etc. £150 for a secondhand one from there, yes, reasonable...

Hence why I was struggling for a price, I can't see anything similar on secondhand sites.

MrsMAgain · 24/10/2022 15:58

I think if your colleague has offered you anything from £400-£750 then that is a very good offer. I would accept it and then perhaps spend the money on something else to remember your dad.

Musti · 24/10/2022 15:59

You can always try and sell it for a higher price. If it sells it sells, nothing lost

Tulipomania · 24/10/2022 15:59

It's not my taste at all, but if it's only 6 months old and absolutely immaculate I would expect to pay 50% of its current brand new price.

Whistlesandbell · 24/10/2022 16:00

I saw this one on Facebook Marketplace.

What would you expect to pay for this?
