Continuation from last thread, for those of us following all the action on Monday.

And yes I'm a LOTR fan, so tried to continue the theme in the thread title 😉

His appearance is absolutely impeccable. Good speech. Don't envy the job ahead but hope he can improve the state of the UK.

Well the image making begins! Rishi has been photographed with Charles to look a similar height.

It's not special treatment btw. It is always interesting that the PM is photographed officially to look their best. There were particular angles for May and Johnson too to flatter them.

That photo is fascinating. Sunak is 5' 6". Charles is apparently 5' 10".

Traditionally the incoming PM kisses the (Queen's) Monarch's hand.

This time its a hand shake and a conscious thought to make the PM and King look equal or at least not showing deferrence to the King.

Thats very deliberate and shows something about Charles too.

Igotjelly · 25/10/2022 12:04

I actually thought it was a decent speech. Recognised and basically apologised for the mess that was Truss. Stated that he recognises trust must be earnt, tough on Ukraine, clear about the need for fiscal responsibility and direct mention of the climate.

SleeplessInEngland · 25/10/2022 12:08

Just in case you were in any danger of starting to take Rees-Mogg seriously:

EXC: Jacob Rees-Mogg says he no longer believes Rishi Sunak is a "socialist" and would now serve in his Cabinet if asked.

He urges Tory unity and warns party faces wipeout at the next GE.

Tells @ Telegraph

he is proud of achievements as Business Secretary

He’s a fucking bellend. And dangerous to go with it 😡

He's definitely saying all the right things.

However as he says we need to see actions not words.

Well quite. I won’t hold my breath….

Abhannmor · 25/10/2022 12:18

Diana was 5' 10". Charles probably not much taller than Rishi.

LexMitior · 25/10/2022 12:19

Charles is much taller than Rishi! What a diplomatic photo it was.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 25/10/2022 12:21

Did I see a different photo? I commented to DH that it made me realise just how short Rishi is - especially as Charles isn’t overly tall.

SizzlestheSausageDog · 25/10/2022 12:25

That is some clever photography. Just wait for a line up of the G7, assuming Rishi lasts that long.

I'm sad and still avoiding cleaning my house. Googled Charles 1.78m and Rishi 1.7m so not a great deal in it if correct.

CaveMum · 25/10/2022 12:27

Charles always looked tall as his parents were both shorter than average. It’s only when you see him with William and Harry that you realise he’s not as tall as you think.

sunnydaytoday0 · 25/10/2022 12:36

I was reading that each PM has their own personalised lectern (Liz's was one made of twisted wooden blocks) with each one costing between £2,000 and £4,000 to make. Rishi used Liz's today due to his speed of appointment. Why on earth can't they have one they reuse and save the taxpayer money?

It's interesing to me that. following his predecessor, Sunak is being painted as a natural centrist. Economically, he really isn't. His whole shtick when he started was as a rising star raging Thatcherite.

LexMitior · 25/10/2022 12:44

He is not a centrist! He believes in deregulation, banning strikes and reduced public spending on benefits.

scaredoff · 25/10/2022 12:48

SleeplessInEngland · 25/10/2022 10:55

No word of an apology. It's a real problem now: we're getting a class of politican who see admitting mistakes as a weakness. At the time Truss dressed it up as bad comms but clearly she still thinks it was the right strategy.

Certainly true, but a graver problem is that we're getting a class of politican who make mistakes of such magnitude in the first place.

I googled in ft and inches and came back with 5'10" for Charles and 5'6" for Rishi!

Tbf, Charles is in his 70s and may not be as tall as he was.

Alexandra2001 · 25/10/2022 12:49

Hard right tory, tried cynically to give away billions on a 1p tax cut in 2023/4 (just before any GE) lost the country 10s of billions in business support loans, has presided over the collapse of the NHS.

Still believes in a very distant relationship with the EU, so no SM... and battles over the NI protocol.

Sorry but he is no different from any other Tory PM we have had since 2016.

BUT i do expect the polls to close dramatically to Labour.

Good news though is JRM has just resigned.

He is as nasty as Mogg, just presents himself as not as bonkers or dangerous I read somewhere on a thread a few months ago that he met with/links with some very dubious & extremely right wing groups in America I may have misremembered that though, maybe someone else will know if that’s true or not.

@RedToothBrush I thought the ‘kissing of the hands’ was just a symbolic gesture, and a figure of speech, rather than a literal gesture. I think Tony Blair said he thought he actually had to kiss the Queen’s hand when he was made PM, but learned that wasn’t the way to do it apparently.

boys3 · 25/10/2022 12:56

JRM jumped before he was pushed.

much more opportunity for mischief making from the backbenches

CaveMum · 25/10/2022 12:57

The haunted hatstand has resigned! Probably didn’t want this handcuff being thrown out on his ear!

Igotjelly · 25/10/2022 12:58

Isn’t it standard for the previous administrations Cabinet to resign.

CaveMum · 25/10/2022 13:01

“This handcuff” was meant to be “the embarrassment” - very odd autocorrrect!
