To need help with ULEZ?

WhoppingBigBackside · 23/10/2022 18:58

Posting for traffic. Please help as I can't make sense of the TfL website.

I drove on the North circular today and think I might have gone into the ULEZ. I realized my error and turned round promptly.
How do I know if I need to pay?

I entered my car reg and it came up with congestion charge £15. I thought CC was for Central London.

Do I need to pay it?

** My little car is very old and has quite a large engine. I hardly drive it (about 150 miles in 5 months), so please don't accuse me of polluting the environment.

No, it means your car is not liable to pay the ULEZ, only congestion charge if you drive into that zone ( which you wouldn't have done as the north circular is nowhere near the congestion zone). ULEZ is only payable if your car does not meet the low emission requirements.

So nothing to pay, happy days! Grin

Type the postcard in here if you know it. tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone

The north circular does have the ULEZ. Create an account and pay.

PatriciaHolm · 23/10/2022 19:05

If you only drove on the north circular and not into London off it, you are fine. The NC itself is not in the zone. You were nowhere near the congestion charge.

The TFL site tells you if your vehicle would be liable for the ULEZ if you drove in it, not whether you did actually drive in it today. It's possible you aren't liable for the ULEZ. When I check mine it says "one charge applies to this vehicle" as it doesn't need to pay the ULEZ but would need to pay the CC if I drove in that area.

Brigante9 · 23/10/2022 19:06

@OnGoldenPond is right. I just read that it doesn’t cover the north or south circular (but is set to expand)

OnGoldenPond · 23/10/2022 19:07

OP, I'm assuming you typed in your reg number in the online checker and the result only mentioned congestion charge? That would mean your vehicle is not liable for the ULEZ.

Brigante9 · 23/10/2022 19:07

*doesn’t have the ULEZ (or the Cc)

havingabubble · 23/10/2022 19:09

Just because the north circular has the ULEZ it doesn't mean you automatically need to pay it.

I suspect this is the link that you have already tried but type your registration number in and it will tell you what charges your car may be liable for if you drive in the relevant zone.

tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle/

If it only comes up with the congestion charge you do not need to pay for driving in a ULEZ area.

You do need to pay the congestion charge but only when you drive in that zone.

MossGrowsFat · 23/10/2022 19:11

I take my mums old polluting car into London because apparently it is Ulez compliant, my newer diesel which is less polluting isn't. I assume a certain age don't have the correct info stored.

WhoppingBigBackside · 23/10/2022 19:15

Thanks. I definitely didn't go to Central London and AFAIK I went a maximum of 50 yds in the ULEZ if I did.

It wasn't a long way away but it took hours, and there was a thunderstorm on the way back.

If you got off the North Circular and went into the ULEZ area you are liable for the ULEZ charge. Its camera controlled at the junctions, so even 50 yards in would see you having to pay. Its not just central London. Here's the map.tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone/ulez-where-and-when?intcmp=52227#on-this-page-0

bumpertobumper · 23/10/2022 19:29

Even if you only went one yard into ulez you would still have to pay if liable. There are cameras on every 'entrance', even tiny side streets.

Use the check you vehicle link pp posted above to see if yours is compliant or not.

If you are not ulez compliant then pay the fee. The system won't tell you whether or not you entered the zone today. If you think you did pay your 12.50. Otherwise a fine will most likely be coming your way.

WhoppingBigBackside · 23/10/2022 19:39

It says I'm exempt, and I've screen captured the page. I hope that's ok.

Thanks for your answers. Now I can just worry that I did something else wrong. Smile

OP that's what I do every time I go into London, take a screenshot of Mum's numberplate showing I don't have to pay Ulez. Its not that I don't trust TFL but if they told me the sky was blue I'd still go out an check.

sashagabadon · 23/10/2022 20:00

If your car is petrol you are probably ok. Mine is ok and it’s 12 years old

WhoppingBigBackside · 23/10/2022 20:18

It's old. Not vintage but it doesn't have an ABnnABC reg. 1600cc.

Define "Polluting"?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 23/10/2022 20:41

@WatchoRulo

I'll bite.

Anything that introduces harmful substances into the atmosphere.

Basically any car, including fully electric.
