Completely inspired by another thread.

Would you like to know when you are going to die?

Say if everyone on their 21st birthday wad given the date they will die?

OP posts:
WhatIsThisPlease · 22/10/2022 21:54

I would if I was younger. But now I'm getting on a bit it's probably a bit closer than I'd like. So no!

PreColumbian · 22/10/2022 22:08

No. I can’t imagine what I’d do with that knowledge. I’d also want to know the manner of my death. But that could be terrifying ( ‘ you’ll trip and fall off a tall building at the age of 62’). And would I know the date and time? No, none of it sounds appealing so it’s a no from me.

MiniPumpkin · 22/10/2022 22:08

Yes

ImaniMumsnet · 22/10/2022 22:10

Hello OP, we are really sorry to hear you are feeling this way.
We hope you don't mind, but when these threads are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health resources. You can also go to the Samaritans website
or email them on [email protected]. Support from other Mumsnetters is great and we really hope you will be able to take some comfort from your fellow posters, but as other MNers will tell you, it's really a good idea to seek real-life help and support as well.

We also like to remind everyone that, although we're awed daily by the astonishing support our members give each other through life's trickier twists and turns, we'd always caution anyone never to give more of themselves to another poster, emotionally or financially, than they can afford to spare.

Some further support links:

NHS: Where to get urgent help for mental health
NHS: Looking after your mental health
MIND: Coping with mental health problems during coronavirus

CALM: The Campaign Against Living Miserably
NHS: Help for suicidal thoughts

Very best wishes from MNHQ.

No, definitely not

Darbs76 · 22/10/2022 22:13

No definitely not. I mean great if it’s 90, but what if it’s 22?

girlmom21 · 22/10/2022 22:18

@mnhq did you actually read the OP?

PreColumbian · 22/10/2022 22:20

No definitely not. I mean great if it’s 90, but what if it’s 22?

It wont be great if it’s 90 when you’re 89.5 though!!

I can put my opinion in

why are you behaving like a complete pain in the arse.

you don't want to discuss the question.

you've said your piece.

Now you're just detailing the thread & baiting people.

Do everyone s favour & find a different thread to enjoy.

Prescottdanni123 · 22/10/2022 22:30

No. I'd hate to be on a count down, even if I found out I was going to live to a good old age.

Mum2jenny · 22/10/2022 22:35

JustOrderADoor I can comment on any thread if I like, your opinion on my posting is irrelevant imo.

NeedWineNow · 22/10/2022 22:35

Not in any way shape or form. I have horrendous health anxiety normally so knowing would mess with my head so much that I wouldn't be able to cope. Similarly knowing about DH life expectancy. Just no.

Batiqueattic · 22/10/2022 22:39

Yes, I need a deadline to make me do anything. Pun kind of intended.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/10/2022 22:43

Yes I would

Unseelie · 22/10/2022 22:48

Yes. I wanna know how much to save for old age.

89redballoons · 22/10/2022 22:48

Yes.

I lost a parent at a young age in a completely unforeseeable accident, and have also lost grandparents and other friends after long illnesses. I've observed that an unexpected death is much worse for the relatives, but a foreseeable death is somewhat easier for relatives although probably harder for the person dying. I'd like to think I'd be brave enough to prioritise what's easiest for my family, especially now I have DC.

Stacpollaidh · 22/10/2022 22:52

I never thought I would want to know, and certainly wouldn’t want to know if any of my family were going to die. I have recently been diagnosed with a chronic blood cancer so now life is even more uncertain. I would like to be able to plan things/cancel paying pension/ sell up/downgrade our home and use the money to go on some nice hols we have never been able to affordif I knew I would pass in this decade. It’s just me and one teen at home. I suppose I need to make plans for a will soon. The uncertainty of it all makes things so much harder.

Suzi888 · 22/10/2022 22:52

Yes, I’d want to know.

darisdet · 22/10/2022 22:53

When and how, I think.

sjpkgp1 · 22/10/2022 23:23

I'm sure this thread is meant to be light hearted, thought provoking and encouraging of debate rather than trolling. I think on balance for me, no. Nor for mine. Bumble on I say. Did remind me of the IT crowd though where Moss knows "exactly how long Roy is going to live for" Unfortunately this clip only shows the bit where they are working it out, rather than the the rest of the program where they go to a funeral and during it, Roy's "time" comes up, with hilarious consequences.

girlmom21 · 22/10/2022 22:18

@mnhq did you actually read the OP?

I don't think they did! 🙃

And fuck no, I would not want to find out.

Basecamp · 23/10/2022 00:40

Absolutely not. Knowing my luck I'd find out I was going to die imminently. Fuck that.

iratepirate · 23/10/2022 00:49

I think I would want to know. I like to plan.

Has anyone else here read The Immortalists? Very similar concept.

CrispsAreYummy · 23/10/2022 06:56

If I knew when I was going to die, I would feel as though I was already dead. I would just be waiting for ‘The Day’. And what if you were told it was the next day??!! Sounds like a terrible plan.

Darbs76 · 23/10/2022 07:11

PreColumbian · 22/10/2022 22:20

It wont be great if it’s 90 when you’re 89.5 though!!

No but the post said if you found out on your 21st birthday hence the reference to 22. I don’t think anyone would be too surprised at 89.5 to think their days were numbered!
