Completely inspired by another thread.

Would you like to know when you are going to die?

Say if everyone on their 21st birthday wad given the date they will die?

OP posts:

You cannot decide time of death as there are so many variables. Illnesses, hit by a bus, killed by a partner, decided to commit suicide as you decide life is not worth living.
Unless someone has been in the future and returns in a time machine, this will never be possible.
Ok, believe what makes you feel happy, but be realistic!!!

Nobody thinks it's something we actually have access to. It's a hypothetical situation. It's fun to see peoples responses.

I would be ok with a vague idea eg within 5 or 10 years
as others have said if im going to die in my 60s I won’t bother as much with a pension

BUT... what if they said you'd die in your early 60s and you decided to therefore spend all your cash and bugger the pension, and then you died BECAUSE you had no pension and froze to death when the electric was cut off?

Yes @ShinyMe this is the sort of thing I was thinking about….like if you and your partner had the same date so you avoided travelling out together in case you died in an accident then died in a gas leak you would’ve otherwise avoided.

Fun question OP!

Couldyounot · 22/10/2022 21:22

No.

Fairislefandango · 22/10/2022 21:22

No. I don't have a particular fear of death and I'm not preoccupied by it, but I think I would be if I knew when it was going to happen. As I approached the time I knew I was going to die, I think life would feel pointless and I'd be very scared about the manner of my death, whether I was going to be terribly ill or in great pain etc. I'd far rather not know!

dudsville · 22/10/2022 21:22

Absolutely. It would sharpen decisions. You couldn't hold the fantasy that life carries on forever. You could hope to stop work in time to breath a bit and watch a sunset or two. The thing i fear most now at the end of my career is whether I'll be alive to enjoy my retirement!

OdkinsBodkins · 22/10/2022 21:23

Yes. I'd like to know the year and perhaps the month, probably not the day or method. Although the method might be useful to know, not sure.

I'd also like to know whether I was going to get a major life-limiting disease and what year that would be, so I could plan the order of my life out a bit better.

RosesAndHellebores · 22/10/2022 21:26

No. DS had a friend who died at 21. He had an undiagnosed heart condition. Imagine if he and his friends had known that aged 18 - and his mother.

OTH I am in my early 60s and if I were told I'd die at 67 I'd retire tomorrow.

Then again if I get to 80 I'm going to have two sherries at lunch time, a stiff gin before dinner and two large glasses of wine with it. Notwithstanding that I shall treat myself to a packet of silk cut once or twice a week Wink

If you actually knew your time of death, your lifestyle choices would be seriously skewed.
As it’s impossible, this topic is no longer worthy of discussing imo.

How much you had to drink? You're trying to shut down the whole discussion when people are having a hypothetical conversation Confused

Thisiscrazyshite · 22/10/2022 21:33

My initial reaction was yes! I suppose that’s because the uncertainty around death does scare me.
But on reflection, no, I don’t want to know. If I had a date and was going to die young (ish), I probably would not have had kids and I’d have missed out on so much and these 3 humans would not exist. I also would obsess about it and probably be very stressed.

love the question…. Thought provoking!

Yourstory · 22/10/2022 21:34

Of course I would like to know. Yes, it would impact on the way everyone lives their lives. Imagine people at work arguing over who is more entitled to have their annual leave when they want it because their death date is first. That's just the small stuff. On the whole though it would be better to know so we can all plan.

Would I like to know how I will die? Not sure on that one. Probably not!

5128gap · 22/10/2022 21:35

I would prefer if we all got to live a set number of years, say 100, in good health then died on our birthday.
It would be incredibly liberating not to have to worry about doing risky things, getting ill, or losing our loved ones unexpectedly.
I'd not want to know the date of my death otherwise as if it was a short life I'd be very depressed.

Mum2jenny · 22/10/2022 21:35

Given your poor use of English, I suspect you have had more units of alcohol than me. I’ve only just opened a bottle of wine and only drunk less than a small glass.

Nice to believe anyone who disagrees with you must have been drinking, says about more about you than me!!!

You don't need to share it 5 times and try to stop anyone else giving their opinion.

Mum2jenny · 22/10/2022 21:47

I’ve never stopped anyone putting in an opinion.

CambsAlways · 22/10/2022 21:48

Yep

Campervangirl · 22/10/2022 21:51

Dm was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at Christmas and was adamant she didn't want to know how long she may have had left.
The doctor said due to her age (80's) she could die with cancer not of cancer which gave her some comfort, she passed 5 months later, 5 months where she continued her life as normal.
No way would I want to know

Sparklybees · 22/10/2022 21:51

Christ no!

I'd be constantly wondering why it's the date it is. And feeling stressed about living my life a certain way.

I'd rather just bumble along.

Irridescantshimmmer · 22/10/2022 21:51

No.
I focus on life.
