In a supernatural hypothetical situation if you were told you died 5 years younger than you are going to/destined to by the Gods/creator (whatever) and you get 5 million quid would you take it?

No

OxanaVorontsova · 22/10/2022 20:35

Yes I would because genetically I’m likely to live to 90+ so losing 5 years would be ok and the 5 million would allow me to stop work now and enjoy life

BankseyVest · 22/10/2022 20:35

My mum died at 69 of a disease that hereditary, I'm 49, so it's the difference between 20 and 15 years. If you'd asked me when I was in my 20s I'd probably have said yes

Dishwashersaurous · 22/10/2022 20:36

Assuming that the £5million is a tax free lump sum. Then yes.

Average life expectancy where I live is 87 for women. So five years off that is 82.

I'd definitely take enough money to never have to work again for that.

FeralWitch · 22/10/2022 20:37

No, because I don’t know when I’m going to die. If I knew I would live to 90, I’d do it in a heartbeat. But for all I know, I could already be in my last five years, and might cark it the minute the cash hits my account!

Sarahcoggles · 22/10/2022 20:07

It's a no from me then. You could literally die the second you've taken the money.

Agree with this.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 22/10/2022 20:45

Didn't even need a second to think of this. Just 5 years? Errr YES!

Try asking the question again, but make it 25 years. Or 30.

Winter2020 · 22/10/2022 20:48

Gut reaction yes, then thinking it through no. I have a 12 year old and a 4 year old. I couldn't take the risk that I might be dead tomorrow.

Norugratsatall · 22/10/2022 20:53

No!

Fink · 22/10/2022 20:53

Assuming the money would pass to my estate after I die, yes. Because if I live to sort of age my family history would indicate then I wouldn't mind five years off the end, and if I die young then at least I would have set up my dc (at the moment I've got bugger all to bequeath).

FindingMeno · 22/10/2022 20:54

No way.

ivykaty44 · 22/10/2022 20:55

no

because that might be tomorrow

& at least now I know I’ve got another 5 years

NiqueNique · 22/10/2022 20:55

If I couldn’t know the ‘natural’ time of my death then no, I would not take that deal.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 22/10/2022 20:56

Yes

MassiveSalad22 · 22/10/2022 20:59

No because my youngest child is 6 months old and what if I’m due to die in 5 years? I’d drop dead now? No thank you!! My plan is to live a reeeeeally long time but I still wouldn’t knock 5 years off. 5 mill is not enough for that!

Mistymountain · 22/10/2022 21:00

Yes

Takingturnstogether · 22/10/2022 21:01

Probably, because I could then get the medical treatment that I need, thereby improving my remaining years.

JaceLancs · 22/10/2022 21:01

Yes

LookingForTipsNotPuns · 22/10/2022 21:02

Yeah but knowing my piss poor luck would probably drop dead on the spot.

nonono1 · 22/10/2022 21:04

I think so. It’s quality not quantity.

Ludoole · 22/10/2022 21:08

5 million would set my kids up (they are 19 and 22) , so I'd top myself for 5 million, let alone wait for 5 years to be took off!!!

Yourstory · 22/10/2022 21:09

Yes, I probably would. I have spent much of my life hanging on to the comfort of knowing it will end one day though.

At least taking 5 million would ensure my children and possible grandchildren wouldn't end up living in poverty, which would likely increase their life expectancy.

It would take a lot of stress away so that I could be more present mentally enabling me to live a more fulfilling life for any time that was left.

I would still want to work though regardless of having the money not to need to and less time to live. Work may increase my constant anxious feelings but I get some satisfaction from it. I wouldn't want to be without it.

Why ask? To see how much we financially value our lives? That would be different depending not only on how much people value their lives, but the way they value those around them and how they value money. Surely also answers may change over time, whether someone is living in poverty or they are experiencing bad health ect, great question though.

TheGirlWhoLived · 22/10/2022 21:12

No, I don’t think I would. I would pay £5 million to ensure I don’t die within the next 5 years. What if you died on the spot , I wouldn’t get to see my children grow.

time for money is never a good trade

Mum2jenny · 22/10/2022 21:12

No

TenoringBehind · 22/10/2022 21:13

Yes
