So bit of a weird one.
Ive recently got a very friendly miniature shetland mare that I keep locally with my horse and a another girls horse in a field.
Today I found something very unsettling in with the mini mare... A used condom.
So immediate bewilderment....
Mare seems fine.. But its plainly obvious someone has been in her part of the field due to where it is..so sadly thinking along the lines of someone has been in and interfered with her.

I called the vet first who said as long as she seemed fine they would advise calling the police to get a incident number so its logged if something happens again.
I called the police and tried to explain my concerns and didnt feel like they understood at all.
I got my O. H to come and look as its so out of the way from the side gate, in through the electric fence and right up to where Mini Pony stands to be close to the other horses. And he agreed it was strange but said there wasnt much I could do about it.

So my gut is telling me someones done something to her. Or what else could it be?

Im beside myself thinking what might of or could happen again.
Ive ordered a night vision motion camera and for now ive put my big horse in with her and made sure all the electric fencing is connected.

The police did call back and ask for further details and said they will get someone from rural crimes to come out and have a look as it sounded very odd to them.. She even said its normally calls about sheep (dont ask!) but with her being small she is the right size.

She is such a friendly sweet little thing I feel I should be able to keep her safe

Maybe a gull has picked up the condom elsewhere and flown over and dropped it

lonelylou09 · 21/10/2022 23:09

@ScrollingLeaves im sure that these people are not that stupid to know they could leave dna behind if caught so its prehaps less risky if they want to carry on getting away with it.
The local police force obviously get enough call outs over sheep to take it seriously and call me back

🤣

Or it arrived on a raft of floating vegetation.

lonelylou09 · 21/10/2022 23:10

@Arnaquer possible but if it had been flying about would it look like it had been taken off and dropped? Doubtful

You found a condom in your field and your first thought wasn't that a couple of humans got a bit frisky, but that a man shagged your pony? 🤔

lonelylou09 · 21/10/2022 23:13

Does this look to anyone like its been thrown /flew/dragged or carried by an animal? Over 15ft spiky hedges or through dense brambles 30 meters in to a field?

Aibu to have called the police over this? Animal abuse?

Ps..can all you bison people go and get your own thread please.. Anyone know how to remove them?

Try calling the council, they deals with wasps so they probably have a ‘Bison removal’ dept.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 21/10/2022 23:14

My experience of rural shaggers is that there's no end to the bizarreness of their choices when it comes to climbing fences and picking strange spots, and common things are common, so I'd definitely suspect that before I thought it likely to be a bestiality event.

I mean, people are weird and shit happens, but most people are just common or garden weirdos who like shagging in astoundingly stupid places.

lonelylou09 · 21/10/2022 23:14

Because there was plenty of empty field for a randy couple to use without walking another 5 minutes through other fencing to where all the horses stand next to the live electric fence?

Of course you did OP🙄

my first thought is that someone was having sex and left the condom behind.

second thought is that someone had sex and threw the condom over the fence.

third thought is that how dangerous for your horse to have condoms in their field.

fourth thought is why is the op’s first thought that someone has had sex with their horse?

I have some experience of this and its not as random as you would think.

ScrollingLeaves · 21/10/2022 22:59

For those saying that people committing beastiality wouldn’t use condoms,
I just looked quickly for “beastiality/condoms”’and found several reports on the first page where condoms had been used so they certainly can be.

You are brave! Sure you want that in your search history

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 21/10/2022 23:17

😂

OP is not being unreasonable a riding school near me had a few horses sexually abused and one has to be put down. There are some very sick people out there

I agree she is not being unreasonable. One of the cases I found when looking up “beastiality/condoms” was of a horse, and she was dead after what had been done to her.

TerfQueen · 21/10/2022 23:22

“I’ll just have a quick browse of Mumsnet before bed”

open app

”someone shagged my horse”

aaaand log off. That’s enough Mumsnet for today. I just can’t after the bloody Bison and J the cocklodger debacle.

Really hope the wee horse is ok tho 😢

StaunchMomma · 21/10/2022 23:22

Would someone shagging a horse use a condom? What purpose would it serve, except maybe not leaving evidence, but then surely they wouldn't leave it there?

Are you sure some local teenagers aren't sneaking into the stables for a quickie?

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 21/10/2022 23:23

Well with the job my son does nothing surprises me any more . The majority of cases are against children or animals

Condescendingtwats · 21/10/2022 23:23

This does happen. It’s awful. If they think they’ve gotten away with it they’ll be back.

i hope this isn’t the case. I’m so sorry op. You must be stressed out of your mind.

Eselch · 21/10/2022 23:25

🤣🤣🤣

this thread is amazing

marvellousmaple · 21/10/2022 23:27

Eek. I have a female mini pony. Mine bites though so good luck to any local weirdos 😂. I'm amazed you have a nice SHetland OP. They appear to be few and far between!

TerfQueen · 21/10/2022 23:29

Actually, I can’t sleep if I don’t ask this…

You repeatedly make it very clear your field is private, gated / electric fenced, very out of the way… who has easy access to your stables and field? Any male members of staff, riders, owners?

And you know, god forgive me and all but… your husband was with you last night wasn’t he?

IM JUST ASKING DONT COME AT ME 👀

Badgirlriri · 21/10/2022 23:31

I definitely think you’ve jumped to the most far fetched conclusion.

mowly77 · 21/10/2022 23:40

Sorry @lonelylou09 didn’t mean to add to the derailing, I just got excited about b*n.

In all seriousness cameras sound like a good idea & I hope your horse is ok & that you can solve the mystery.

HappyChickenEggs · 21/10/2022 23:44

You’ve made me think about this more than I want to but surely in a situation of animal abuse using a condom and then throwing it down in the location of crime, leaves evidence.
Whereas no condom, without forensic examination, no evidence.

My first thought would be 2 people who have gone a bit off beaten track, even if this seems an unlikely location.

However if people didn’t consider awful things, perpetrators would get away with more.
