Liz Truss stands to get 115k for life. Lovely jubbly

Yes - it needs to be stopped. Outrageous / but given the level of Tory immorality I’d not be surprised if she takes it.

DoubleDinnurs · 21/10/2022 22:41

No incentive to do a decent job, just fanny around for a bit and then collect a pension and charge even more for public speaking or consultancy work.

I think to many of these senior politicians pretending to serve the public is one big gravy train.

DownAtTheBodyShop · 21/10/2022 22:43

That’s not entirely true.

She could technically claim expenses up to £115k as part of the Public Duty Cost Allowance

The PDCA was introduced to assist former Prime Ministers still active in public life. Payments are made only to meet the actual cost of continuing to fulfil public duties.

The costs are a reimbursement of incurred expenses for necessary office costs and secretarial costs arising from their special position in public life. The allowance is not paid to support private or parliamentary duties. The PDCA is in addition to any constituency office which they may maintain as a Member of Parliament. The PDCA allowance is paid from the Cabinet Office vote and administered by the Cabinet Office Finance Team.

Do people really think she’ll settle for £115k government reimbursement and stay in public “duty” (word is a bit hard to swallow when it comes to someone so self-serving) rather than millions from more lucrative private endeavors?

JocelynBurnell · 21/10/2022 22:47

@DownAtTheBodyShop, are you seriously claiming that Liz Truss would earn millions from private endeavors???

Wow.

Oblomov22 · 21/10/2022 22:53

£115k for life? No. That can't be true.

Wauden · 21/10/2022 22:54

C'mon, she earned every penny of it.

BamBamBilla · 21/10/2022 22:57

She was off for 2 weeks too.

Wow.

Yes.

She already has.

She made millions before entering politics in the oil and telecoms sectors. While she’s a failed PM, she still has some very powerful connections- both political and industrial.

I’d imagine she has very significant investments that will generate good returns. Don’t forget, a lot of her senior roles were in economics- she knows how to make rich people like herself even richer (as the recent mini-budget showed).

Add in some spin and after dinner speeches about resilience and Lizzie won’t be out on the streets.

Diamondwhiteandbabyshamgirl · 21/10/2022 23:43

Absolutely disgusting on the highest level. Definitely pigs in the troughs and all that!! Oink oink

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 21/10/2022 23:47

Chickenfeed (as Johnson would say). She's already a millionairewith plenty of friends in high laces. That's why she had no qualms about gambling and losing with all of our mortgage rates. Utterly reprehensible.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 22/10/2022 00:00

I am so disgusted that if I were to post what I think I'd be banned.

GoldenGorilla · 22/10/2022 00:29

FFS this is not even slightly true.

IF in future she has expenses relating to being a former prime minister, then she can claim reimbursement of those expenses up to a limit of £115k.

Those expenses might be - for example- if she’s asked to attend a state funeral that all former PMs are attending. If that happens, she could get reimbursed for her travel expenses.

Thats all. She is absolutely not being given £115k a year.

willstarttomorrow · 22/10/2022 00:30

This is really a non-issue. Arguably elected local representatives MPs are considered low salary- hence why lots of people are put off. There are lots of very good MPs out there who sit on the back benches and really care about their constituents. For example the late Jo Cox and my MP (who is now shadow chancellor) Rachel Reeves. Some could actually earn a lot more.

Then you get the grandstanding, went to Eton/Harrow, lot with all their outside interests and huge salaries from questionable means. It is well known Boris 'struggled' on his salary as a PM but is expected to make millions off the back of his shambolic time in office and public speaking etc (which considering he was often absent when in office- including now, he has been on holiday again when still meant to be representing his constituents)....

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 22/10/2022 00:33

Given the way the expenses scandal went, and how much MPs deluded themselves into thinking they genuinely deserved that money, I doubt she’s going to NOT claim anything she can as ‘expenses’.

MarshaMelrose · 22/10/2022 00:50

You can get it. Go be a politician.

SilverCatStripes · 22/10/2022 00:56

I don’t think you can blame Liz Truss for accepting this though- surely this is a ‘blame the system not the players’ type situation- can you honestly say hand on heart that you wouldn’t accept the money if you were offered it ?

I wouldn’t turn it down.
