Cleaner raising prices

inthemornin · 21/10/2022 18:50

Received a text from our cleaner we have had a few years now. She is raising her hourly price from £12 to £15. Fair enough, we are in a cost of living crisis, however, £3 more per hour is a big and sudden jump. She also gave less than one months notice to this price increase.

What do you all think?

YABU - that sounds about right in this current time.

YANBU - that is a big price increase.

Our cleaner did this recently too & I thought it was fair enough. It's inflation.

Candymay · 22/10/2022 07:18

Do all your cleaners bring their own cleaning supplies? I’ve never heard of that. I’ve always been given a bill for any supplies that I haven’t had ready here.

RedRiverShore2 · 22/10/2022 07:25

Is that self employed, £12 an hour must work out after expenses as less than minimum wage, YABU

londonrach · 22/10/2022 07:29

Yabu. She was under changing before at £13. £15 is still cheap. The question is does she do a good job and how long you had her. Anyone new will charge £15 or more..

First world problems eh? Next you will be complaining they have put up the price of caviar or your childrens private school fees 🤣🤣🤣

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/10/2022 13:56

If you think she’s worth it, pay it, if not look for someone else or decide to do without a cleaner.

posters seem to think that cleaners jobs are safe; I’m just not sure that will be the case next year.

MrsC09 · 22/10/2022 14:07

I’m in Australia and it’s now $60 /. £35 per hour where I live! Needless to say I no longer have the luxury of a cleaner!

Blaggertyjibbet · 22/10/2022 14:09

YABU. Mine is 18/hour, which is pretty standard around here. Would YOU do hard physical work for £12/hour? I know I wouldn’t.

A newly qualified nurse is on 13.84 p/h rising to 14.92 p/h after 2 years experience. Not taking anything away from cleaners they do a fantastic job and deserve every penny. It just shows how poorly paid NHS staff are.

FGS the cost to the NHS to employ a nurse isn't £13.84 or £14.92 is it? 😂
More like £30-100 an hr.

Haha the cost to employ? Where was that mentioned? Were discussing hourly rate

Many, many, many people do.
Minimum wage is still under £10ph, and a lot less if you haven't turned 21. Let's not pretend otherwise.

Samesesame · 22/10/2022 14:52

Our cleaner recently put her hourly rate up by £5ph ! We had to say we can’t afford her anymore and she said we have to pay her the new rate for the notice period which we refused

How is an employed rate comparable to a business/self-employed rate?
Haha.
Are you a Labour supporter?

Grapewrath · 22/10/2022 15:16

Good cleaners are very hard to come by ime so if you don’t want/can’t afford the going rate I’m sure someone else will pay it.

Hocuspocus99 · 22/10/2022 15:18

Self employed cleaners like myself have to pay national insurance and tax . Have no pension or sick pay . Travel between clients . Provide my own cleaning products . Often spend longer at a clients house due to helping out doing others things not always associated with cleaning . Expected to know how to do other things and know a list of trades people and I often do because with the help of my friend Google I can find out ! Reporting things to the clients who incidentally live in the property and haven’t noticed the leak they’ve had for weeks , calling at the shops , helping with filling in forms. For me it’s not just a cleaning job . But do you know at the end of the day I actually love it I’m my own boss and had my clients for years . And incidentally I haven’t upped my prices yet . So currently £12 an hour ,but sadly I will have to .

bloodyeverlastinghell · 22/10/2022 15:27

I think it’s reasonable. Min wage is £11.09 an hour really £9.50 plus statutory holiday pay. I’ve seen a few hospitality jobs recently that are advertising at that rate. So by the time she pays self employed ni contributions and has to account for travel time between jobs she’s earning less than minimum wage surely? Good cleaners are hard to find.

even the local out the way holiday park is offering £15 an hour for cleaners. People with holiday cottages were saying they were having to pay £20 an hour where I am.

Fair play to you - you sound like a wonderfully kind and helpful person and PA to your clients, but, to be fair, I suspect you are in a small minority of cleaners to take on all those additional roles.
