Cleaner raising prices

inthemornin · 21/10/2022 18:50

Received a text from our cleaner we have had a few years now. She is raising her hourly price from £12 to £15. Fair enough, we are in a cost of living crisis, however, £3 more per hour is a big and sudden jump. She also gave less than one months notice to this price increase.

What do you all think?

YABU - that sounds about right in this current time.

YANBU - that is a big price increase.

Sounds ok

amspeechless · 21/10/2022 19:14

You would not get a cleaner earning less than £15 hr where I live I actually think they deserve more!

Oysterbabe · 21/10/2022 19:15

That's still pretty cheap I think.

Darbs76 · 21/10/2022 19:17

I think £12 feels quite low, depending where you are. Mine charges £17 ph with her own products, but she does mine for £15 with own products (as I need to buy those products anyway). She’s a friend also. She has put up the price for those she drives to, I only live around the corner. For me it’s well worth £30 a week as single mum, busy job and no-one else is going to help clean the house unless I pay. My dog Walker has increased prices twice this year, from £12-£13.50, then £15 a walk. She did drop one day though so my overall cost is the same. But if costs escalate further these are things I could cut, though dog walks would he last to go, but he loves my cleaner so I could drop that day as she leaves around midday and someone is home by 3.30.

What does your contract say?

Does anyone have a contract with a cleaner? I don’t. Though she’s my friend, but I don’t think she’s got a contract with any of her customers

26twentysix · 21/10/2022 19:19

Mine usually goes up by a pound in the spring. Normally fine, but think may have to call it a day and accept it is a luxury I can't afford anymore when it comes to it next year.

PearlclutchersInc · 21/10/2022 19:21

I got flamed for a similar post. £15 is pretty well the going rate, especially if you get someone new.

So, is she's good cough up.

LynneBenfield · 21/10/2022 19:24

She isn’t BU to increase her charges. It sounds like a fair increase. It’s likely her costs have risen and she is in control of her own earnings.

If you can’t afford to pay it or feel it is too much, YANBU to discontinue your contract or reduce your hours with her.

LillyLeaf · 21/10/2022 19:26

We pay £20 per hour including cleaning supplies, I think that increase is pretty reasonable.

mrsnjw · 21/10/2022 19:27

Mine has been £15 ph for at least a year now x

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/10/2022 19:30

@Darbs76 we haven’t had a cleaner for a good few years now but when we did we had a contract covering sickness, holidays, equipment/ products, and it included fees and price rises notice periods. I thought that was quite normal tbh.

AloysiusBear · 21/10/2022 19:31

Yabu. Ive been paying 15 a while. They don't really make the full 15 when they knock off travel between jobs, transport, cleaning products.

Helpmeheal · 21/10/2022 19:31

Yep 15 is normal. You've been paying too little.
If she's good & trustworthy then I'd keep her on. If not, then get rid but I expect you'll be paying 15+ elsewhere.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/10/2022 19:32

“I can see why you'd find that difficult/unpalatable.”

What? Paying someone you know and trust enough to let them into your home every week a decent amount is “unpalatable”? What a really stomach churning comment.

Notsureaboutusername · 21/10/2022 19:32

You have been getting a bargain at £12 per hour. If she is self employed £15 is still cheap

Buteverythingsfine · 21/10/2022 19:33

Mine has gone up from 12, to 14 to 15, in SW, so I think that's the going rate.

HappyChickenEggs · 21/10/2022 19:41

YABU

drkpl · 21/10/2022 19:44

I don’t think £15 ph is unreasonable if she does a good job in the current climate. Think about how much cleaning products and other things have gone up.

drkpl · 21/10/2022 19:44

*reasonable

floppybit · 21/10/2022 19:44

£15 is minimum here, north of England

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 21/10/2022 19:45

£15/ hour very reasonable when it includes materials

HollyJollypup · 21/10/2022 19:48

Big increase!

MouldyCheeseandBiscuits · 21/10/2022 19:50

just passed McDonalds in north big sign outside
£12.50 an hour, £9.50 if under 18
no travelling between houses/downtime
paid holiday, pension etc

EmilyGilmoresSass · 21/10/2022 19:51

YABVU. I'd feel bad paying anyone £12 an hour with the cost of living crisis. That being said I can't afford the luxury of a cleaner to begin with 🤷‍♀️ maybe you should let her move on to someone who values her enough to pay her more

Itloggedmeoutagain · 21/10/2022 19:53

If you're happy to pay it, pay it.
If not, let them go
