Would you let your 13 yr old watch or play 18s?

I know the rating is 18, but personally I think that is unreasonable and totally depends on the film.

My 13yr old is not allowed to watch psycho/horror gore Halloween type films such as Halloween at this rating, or sexy stuff such as Wolf of Wall Street

But he has gta on his computer due to him moaning to me that his friends have it and he wants to be able to play with them.

He is also currently on to season 2 of breaking bad, which I didn’t realise he was watching until yesterday as he’d binge watched it whilst ill and I was in work. I’ve seen them all and know what to expect. I don’t want to stop him because he’s really in to it and I know if it was me I’d be pissed off.

yabu - bad bad parent

yanbu - it depends on the individual film/game?

Because it’s interactive porn for god’s sake.

Are you trying to groom your grandson?

It's upto his parents.

What are your views on buying porn for young children?

Don't think she/he objects easy life parenting

considering GTA doesn’t count as porn I’m not sure why your point is relevant

but please do continue with your whataboutism, it’s quite amusing

Nobody’s saying that a thirteen year old can’t tell the difference between real life and a video game. They’re saying that (although they might not replicate the actual content) young preteens and teens shouldn’t have access to interactive violent pornographic content because it can impact their minds and attitudes to others. And if we’re actually honest about it op agrees with that - she won’t let him watch old campy slashers or what she calls ‘sexy’ films, so she obviously does think there’s something undesirable about him having access to sexualised/violent content. Except when she’s too lazy to enforce it because he’s already watched/played it.

Two posters have claimed just that if you bothered to read their posts.

JuneOsborne · 22/10/2022 19:20

I'm sat here reading this watching my 10 year old drawing Pokémon. I can't believe in 3 years he will be playing violent games and watching people make meth, if I chose to parent how you have.

I know a lot changes in 3 years at that age (I have an older teen too) but crikey, waiting a couple of years till he's significantly older won't do any harm. Letting him immerse himself in this stuff might though.

Yabu.

Why doesn’t it ‘count as porn’? You can find clips from it on pornhub.

My DC are all adults now.

I just saw it’s your grandchild

I don’t agree with your view on the imagery but you’re right it’s up to the parents.

misskatamari · 22/10/2022 19:24

Ffs just wrote a big reply that disappeared. Films, don’t care, whatever. Games like GTA - not a chance in hell! There is NO way a child should be playing those games, getting immersed in those worlds and embodying the characters who are behaving in such violent and misogynistic ways.

You can also find clips of Poldark on pornhub

do you think that’s porn?

I don’t know what Poldark is. Does it also have topless women in tiny thongs that you’re encouraged to virtually grope?

Poldark is a BBC period drama.

You keep changing your point, shows how weak it is.

Just because something is on pornhub doesn’t make it pornography, there are many clips on there from regular films, TV shows etc.

You are aware you don’t have to grope anything or anyone on GTA right?

This is what happens when people with very little knowledge of something try to comment on it.

CheeseForTea · 22/10/2022 19:35

jannier · 22/10/2022 01:17

There's plenty of criminal and child psychologists who do....but I guess your better trained.

Still claiming you didn’t seem to think that 13 year olds can’t tell between fantasy and reality, and that you went one step further and claimed ‘plenty’ of child psychologists do? Did you forget what you posted?

would love to see anything to back this up…

I own GTA 5 and have probably played about 100 hours on it; at what point do I become sufficiently qualified to have an opinion?

I also owned GTA 4, and the older ones in the 90s, if that’s relevant?

My thesis, controversial as it may be, is that GTA V contains some pornographic content, including realistic, interactive topless lapdances, that is not appropriate for young children.

Which posters have said he won’t be able to understand that it literally isn’t real? Who has said that a teenager can’t tell GTA didn’t really happen since it’s a video game?

People have said it will and does influence real life, not that he’ll mistake Breaking Bad for a Louis Theroux special.

I agree it’s not appropriate for young children. I disagree with the hysterics on here.

Random question, do you prefer, franklin, Michael, Trevor, or Davey ?

My ex let her son play Call of Duty when he was 13. Despite only being a step-parent, I felt strongly enough to suggest it was a mistake. She came to the same conclusion when he was watching a real-life death that had occurred, that was reported on the news... and he blurted our the words "awesome kill". I have no idea if his altered view of the world went as far as thinking there was a reset option and the dead person would come alive again, but it was a defining moment. To my mind, playing the game frequently enough had reinforced / programmed his mind to follow certain pathways.

Livetoplay · 21/10/2022 18:52

GTA is casually violent and sexist. You really want your child role playing as a pimp? Fucking hell. He’s a CHILD. He can’t distinguish between reality and fantasy, his brain is still growing and learning.

you’re numbing your child to violence, sexism, sexual violence. It causes problems later - just look at the sexual harassment girls in school have to deal with now.

he badgered your to get it? All his mates have it? Just fucking parent. If I gave in to my 13 year old based on what he SAYS his mates do he’d be watching 18s, have every single console on earth, have the latest IPhone, £300 trainers and stay up half the night.

we have a ratings system for games and films for a reason.

@Kanaloa here is poster number one

”He’s a CHILD. He can’t distinguish between reality and fantasy”

then as stated on my first post @Sometimeswinning and @jannier seem to agree, @jannier goes one step further and claims plenty of psychologists agree with livetoplay

Kanaloa · 22/10/2022 19:55

@CheeseForTea

And if you read that entire post rather than one tiny sentence from it you’ll see that overall the poster was talking about being numbed to violence and sexism and how it seeps into real life by influencing attitudes to women overall. I don’t think that poster was suggesting the boy is literally looking at the TV going ‘wow this is real life look it’s REAL!’

I think the ‘he is a child, he can’t distinguish between fantasy and reality’ is quite clear

And the posts from @Sometimeswinning claiming plenty of studies show children can’t tell the difference, whilst also conveniently not specifying what ages those studies cover continue the theme.

But please do continue speaking for others

You’re a negligent parent. Hth

jannier · 22/10/2022 20:04

How many players call the people they play with and chat to online but have never met friends? I'd never say someone I've never met a friend but children do getting wrapped up in online worlds, which is why we ask parents to be aware of online saftey, limit access etc. Unfortunately many children meet online friends and find it's not real.
There are parents who wouldn't let their child out the front door ho don't know the world their child lives in on their device locked for hours in their bedrooms.

I don’t think I’ve played as half of them. Franklin is the only name I recall… I’m one of those players that just enjoys the sandbox (often armed with cheat codes) rather than playing through the actual missions. I’ve never completed a GTA game.
