My fantasy - and I can't actually see why we couldn't do this .....

Group of us me be somewhere remote . Farm our own veg , keep hens and cows - eat our own eggs and milk , live a good life without killing anything, build yurts , teach our kids the really important things in life - nature , kindness, spelling and basic maths and science , share with our friends and neighbours and embrace our kids with differences as well as our nt kids - basically start a bloody hippy commune where we do t have to worry about our kids being bullied or our gas bills .

Anyone with me ? I'd go tomorrow. Had enough of politics and idiots . I just want to live a good life , love my animals , nurture my friends and cook and share.
Fancy the highlands of Scotland or somewhere equally off grid . We could club together. Fuck off . Forget liz fucking truss and that whole shit show and just live . Love our dogs and our cats and our cows and our hens , look after each other , raise kids as a village , live a bloody amazing life.

Sign up . I'd seriously do this if we had enough interest, people , and yurts !

Not sure how I feel about the Yurts, maybe we could all pitch in and cash-buy one of those ancient 19th century mansions with subsidence and a leaky roof?

That'll do .

Thing is, it only takes one antisocial asshole to ruin a community. So then rules are needed. And it’s just a mini version of our society.

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/10/2022 01:26

Isn't van living getting more difficult because of legislation etc in terms of where you can pitch up overnight?

diggersanddreamers.org.uk if you still fancy the intentional community thing, btw

stillvicarinatutu · 20/10/2022 01:26

Failing that - if no one fancies it I'll just get myself a fab camper van - load my pooch , and bugger off .
More
Likely .

Nope! Farming is bloody hard work.

There are places like this. Wouldn't be for me but there are people who love it.

XenoBitch · 20/10/2022 01:31

I do know someone who lives in a camper van. Is fine when the weather is nice. Every winter, she posts on FB asking to stay with someone for a few months.

KloppsTeeth · 20/10/2022 01:32

I’d like to give this a go. Alternatively, I fancy an RV and driving around solving MN issues for people like a cross between Velma and the gang and the A team.

Actually thinking organising a coup would be easier. We’ll March on parliament, storm news at 10. Declare Mumsnet law. Sure there will be fighting and power struggles but I doubt even the most diverse of opinions on here could do worse. Grab the pitchforks and we leave at dawn.

Threeboysandadog · 20/10/2022 01:32

If I was a lot younger I would love to do join you but, for me, those days are gone. I do bake bread etc. and make jam and chutney and this year we’re expanding our fruit bushes and getting a greenhouse. Apparently our house deeds say we can’t keep chickens. I am in the Scottish Highlands but not remote.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 20/10/2022 01:35

I'll come if I'm allowed a big dog.

antelopevalley · 20/10/2022 01:35

There are intentional communities already set up where you can do this.

Caiti19 · 20/10/2022 01:36

Yes, I think like this quite often, but maybe from a different angle - more from division of labour angle. I find us all living in separate houses driving separate cars to the same destinations, coming home and cooking separate meals mental at times. When you think about how much women get from the company of women (Exhibit A: Mumsnet), how much men get from company of men and how children crave the company of children, it's like we're working against our own grain with how society is structured with us all in such separate bubbles and not sharing tasks. The life you describe sounds idyllic but better suited to a place that's warm all year round - where outdoors is an extension of indoors year round.

Obvious thing to do is occupy Center Parcs.

If you hop on facebook you will find various self sufficiency/homesteading groups, some of those have intentional community members. You would want to be careful though who you pick, there are some real lazy losers out there!

I live rurally and went in with the mindset of growing our food. It's varyingly successful, but it can be very lonely and cabin fever can set in, esp. when you are doing the same chores day in and out, every day of the year.

Unfortunately where there is life, there is death and sometimes you have to do the killing in the best interests of the animal, whether that be a chook, cow or stray cats who are intent on killing your young chicks.

Legislation doesn't leave you alone though !
