To wonder why people don't know the difference between loose and lose

Bbq1 · 19/10/2022 17:34

Why is it so many people do not know that "loose' is a totally different word to" lose' with entirely different meanings? There's at least one thread daily using the word incorrectly. For example, "I am going to loose money"... The other one is "reins' and 'reigns'. A poster will say something along the lines of," My toddler wears reigns'. Is it really that difficult to know especially when it comes to loose and lose?

I really struggle with lose and loose!

MakeMineALarge1 · 19/10/2022 19:41

Affect and effect as well whilst I am at it.

There are a number of mistakes in your OP that you might like to correct before posting about other people's mistakes OP.

Yes, I addressed that upthread. I explained that any 'mistakes' were due to the fact that I wasn't wearing my glasses when I was typing and was struggling to see clearly.

If you can understand what they are saying why do you care OP. It does not make you big or clever. Maybe you just think it's smart to poke holes at people who have mild/bad learning and writing difficultys. Writing is not a measure of intelligence 🙄

Bbq1 · 19/10/2022 20:45

I would add that not once on this thread have I called anyone stupid, thick or any other offensive terms. Obviously it is nothing to do with comprehension as everybody understands what these posters are trying to say.
Oh well, off to Pedant's Corner for me!

You'll be lonely there Wink

If you can excuse yourself for making mistakes, why not others?

I can see why people spell this incorrectly. Doesn't bother me.

Brought instead of bought however...

The brought / bought one bugs me too!

Haha, I definitely know the difference. I should have been wearing my glasses when I type as I can't see clearly without them.

Oh, so you have a mild disability. My adult son has severe dyslexia; it's one of the reasons that he might mix up "lose" and "loose."

These threads are so tiresome.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/10/2022 20:54

I struggle with passed and past.

neverendinglauaundry · 19/10/2022 20:54

I get those two mixed up. To be honest I didn't even notice there was a difference for years. I've never been good at spelling, I don't know why. I'm not below average intelligence, I'm educated to masters level and back when I last did an IQ test as a teen, I got 130 (I don't really think IQ tests are a good indication of intelligence, but just as a rough guide.)
I did grow up as a free school meals kid in what was considered a rough area and I don't think I'm great at understanding small p politics at work, but yeah, in answer to your question, I don't know why I make that mistake.
Does it annoy you?

SenecaFallsRedux · 19/10/2022 20:56

Good idea about a decency checker. 😀But it would probably crash the site with all the unkindness that seems to inhabit the place of late.

There was a thread just the other day of someone who identified themselves as a first time poster asking for advice, and the first two responses were to correct the poster's spelling. With the added charm of an exclamation mark.

You posted because you were wondering why people don't know the difference between loose and lose. Have any of the answers helped clear that up for you?

MassiveSalad22 · 19/10/2022 21:36

Loose like noose.
Lose like lost.

I struggle with passed and past.

Me too! Can’t explain why whichever one is right, is right. The past. Went past. But when to use passed??? 😄

Of course...

Riverlee · 19/10/2022 21:40

Anyone else just had to look up the meanings to check they understood it correctly?

LuciferRising · 19/10/2022 21:41

Educated to Masters level and I still have to look it up every single time. I was never taught phonics and it doesn't sink in.

Have to look this up too and it still confuses me.

Lose like lost.

Gonna stick this on my office wall!

I always have to think about bear and bare for some reason.
As in ‘I can’t bear it’

newtb · 19/10/2022 22:09

Bare with me, anyone?

custardbear · 19/10/2022 22:21

I can't get too worked up about it, I have to think it through every time I write it. I have a PhD so I'm not think, I guess it's one of those things.... there's more to fry worked up about elsewhere I think

Wetblanket78 · 19/10/2022 22:26

Sometimes my phone changes the word I typed out. But I don't always realise before posting. I don't really see how it matters. As long as you understand what they are saying.

Gotta love the spelling police. How about stop being such a snob?

Fairislefandango · 19/10/2022 22:26

It's just a spelling mistake, and not one that's particularly difficult to understand, since a double 'o' commonly makes an 'oo' sound, and a single 'o' usually doesn't. Honestly, these faux-baffled OPs slyly picking on people's English are getting almost as annoying as the faux-baffled OPs who simply can't understand why people have different taste in clothes, food, holidays from them.

AllBlocChain · 19/10/2022 22:28

I am a grown up, a well educated one and I always check loose women vs lose women to make sure I get the correct spelling 🥸
