EON are trying to charge me 4K

I just moved house last month and I've been paying eon via direct debit for gas and electricity for the past 2 years.

My account was in credit by over £300 2 months ago and now they've told me I owe £4030 after moving out (majority for electricity.)

How can this be right? I don't understand. It was a one bedroom flat and I used the tv for a few hours a day/ oven on once a day and the washing machine on a few times a week.

What can I do? I feel like this must be a mistake.

Is this based on estimated or actual meter readings for when you moved in/out and everything inbetween...?

MadeForThis · 18/10/2022 19:40

Did you give actual meter readings every month?

Soriaa · 18/10/2022 19:40

They've got actual meter readings from when I moved in and out of the old flat. They also have meter readings every few months during the 2 year period I was there. The others were estimated.

But I have been paying it every month 🥺 I don't know how I can now owe over four thousand pounds. There's no way I can afford it.

How much were you paying monthly?
Do the readings they have on the final bill match with yours?

Mapleapple · 18/10/2022 19:42

It does seem odd if you supplied regular meter readings, have they provided a breakdown of this amount? Have they input your final reading correctly?

NoSquirrels · 18/10/2022 19:43

How is the difference between your £300 credit and the £4,000 final bill being explained by the numbers?

RagzRebooted · 18/10/2022 19:44

It must be a mistake, if you've been submitting readings and were in credit until now. Double check the last electricity reading against the one on your bill and see if there's an obvious error. Have you spoken to them?

NewBootsAndRanty · 18/10/2022 19:45

If your £300 credit balance a couple of months ago was based on an actual reading, they're suggesting you used over £4k in that period of time. Double check the final readings

Soriaa · 18/10/2022 19:45

I was paying about £120 a month.

Could a neighbour have tapped in and stolen my electricity? Sorry if that sounds crazy, I'm just panicking here. I live in a block of flats if that's relevant.

OP posts:
itsgettingweird · 18/10/2022 19:45

They haven't accidentally out your last actual reading from old address and new actual reading on the same bill have they?

Or are they saying from what you'd paid at last address the final reading have a debit of £4k?

Either way they are very likely wrong and it's an input error somewhere.

Mind you the sent my sibling saying he's used £90 gas since January and £5 last month.

Then suggested he raise his DD to £398 as they predicted he'd use over £4k had next year 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

mondaytosunday · 18/10/2022 19:45

Have a look at your bills. Were you paying enough? Is it possible your monthly amount was far too low?
Even so, I lived in a large detached house with four people and we didn't spend £2k a year on electricity. Something doesn't add up here.

NotDavidTennant · 18/10/2022 19:46

This must be an error. There is no way you can have used over £4k of electricity in 2 years.

Howmanysleepsnow · 18/10/2022 19:46

Tweet them, and ask them to review. I got a £568 rebate entitled “back billing protection” in a similar situation but with an £800ish debit. It took months, but they froze the account in the interim.

Soriaa · 18/10/2022 19:46

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Mapleapple · 18/10/2022 19:46

It’s very unlikely a neighbour is using your energy supply and much more likely you haven’t submitted as many readings as you thought and have been underpaying, or the company have messed up somewhere.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2022 19:47

Check they have used the correct readings and haven't transposed any figures.

BowlofNothing · 18/10/2022 19:48

What was the read when you moved in and what was the read when you moved out? Start by working out how units you've used and go from there.

MaryGubbins · 18/10/2022 19:50

I once got a crazy bill as my meter had been replaced so it looked like I had used thousands of units. Took a couple of months for meter replacement dept to tell billing and sort it all out

Soriaa · 18/10/2022 19:51

I've just checked my bill and they're saying I've used 54.54 kWh/day

Surely that is not correct?

OP posts:
Mapleapple · 18/10/2022 19:52

No, definitely not, the average is about 9kWh/day. It has to be an error their end. Unless you were running a cannabis farm!

sandytooth · 18/10/2022 19:52

They are on WhatsApp but are busy at the moment so it can take a few days but yes I'd ask them to check they have your final meter read in correctly

For context, that's 54 times my useage (albeit just me in a 1 bed flat with gas).

Of electricity? That can't be right not unless you were hosting the Blackpool Illuminations. I am in a 3 bed semi and use between 7 - 10kWh a day (most days are closer to 7)

gendercriticalcomingout · 18/10/2022 19:53

Was your heating electric?

No that's a ridiculous amount. I'm guessing the numbers were input wrong. Check the bills vs meter readings you gave
