EON are trying to charge me 4K

I just moved house last month and I've been paying eon via direct debit for gas and electricity for the past 2 years.

My account was in credit by over £300 2 months ago and now they've told me I owe £4030 after moving out (majority for electricity.)

How can this be right? I don't understand. It was a one bedroom flat and I used the tv for a few hours a day/ oven on once a day and the washing machine on a few times a week.

What can I do? I feel like this must be a mistake.

As others have said, it’s probably a mistake in the final metre reading. I made a mistake once while submitting a reading (I got the day and night readings mixed up) and ended up with a huge bill, but they fixed it quickly.

MrsMinted · 18/10/2022 21:02

It could EASILY be a mistake. Challenge it.

Years ago, British Gas tried to charge me a fortune when i moved flat. That was a mistake and they corrected it. Then a few months later they sent me a cheque for £2000 due to overpayment. Completely impossible as I never paid that much in the entire time I occupied the flat! So then I had to sort that out too.

Apparently it was all caused by computer system errors.

Never trust a utility bill, they are all dodgy as anything.

There's nothing about final readings or meter readings on my bill.

There must be, it can't be a bill if it doesn't say how the amount has been calculated

In that case, it’s not even a bill!

call them. This is an error.

I have no idea what these companies are doing but they tried to charge my neighbour £800 for electricity last month. He lives in a identical flat but I work at home and he doesn’t. No idea what these people are up to.

Randommother · 18/10/2022 21:07

I’m with Eon, my statement shows costs on the first page, and then breaks it down showing the meter readings on page 2.

MatildaJayne · 18/10/2022 21:07

This is what the second page of my monthly statement looks like on the EON Next app.

Have you/they transposed the figures? I had this once, had a huge bill and they refused to accept that it was wrong. Had to get someone out to check the meter and see the current reading before they would change it. Obviously not an easy option for you

xyzandabc · 18/10/2022 21:21

That bill shows it's for £64.81 for 1 month. And using 5.75kWh per day which sounds about right

Where are you getting £4k from?

Randommother · 18/10/2022 21:23

Are you sure you have all the pages if you’re not seeing the meter readings? It should tell you how many pages there are on the bottom right of the sheet

That's not the OP's bill.

xyzandabc · 18/10/2022 21:24

Apologies, just realised that's not the OPs bill!

That was someone else’s example, showing a typical Eon bill with readings

justusandmoo · 18/10/2022 21:40

EON did this to me too although the amounts were a bit less. I paid every month the amount they told me to, that took me into nearly £900 credit and then they suddenly told me I was 2k in debt. Ended up on the phone to them trying to sort. Apparently they collect the money but don't always apply it to your account immediately. When they did finally apply it they found that we hadn't been paying enough and that put us into debt. Shocking!

We have had to add the debt to our monthly bill and pay it back.

Hope you get it sorted out x

sandytooth · 18/10/2022 21:58

OP - does @MatildaJayne'S example help? If there are no meter readings then you need to ask for them and I've no idea what it is they've sent you. Is it legit from them? Not scam?

limitededitionbarbie · 18/10/2022 22:06

Op you need the opening read when you moved in on that day and the end read when you moved out on that day.

From there we can see what your consumption is and whether it tallies with your bill now and what's expected if your using about 5kWh a
Day.

If you have a smart meter, they will have all of these reads. Have you asked for them. Have you asked for the opening read when you moved in.

Bumply · 18/10/2022 23:17

I use less than 12kwh for a two bed flat with multiple computers with large monitors running (what feels like 24/7), so your daily figure seems way out.

cimena · 19/10/2022 00:37

They just did this to us, and tried to raise our direct debit to £400 a month when we’re using tops £200 worth of energy. Took three or four phone calls, some meter readings and some annoyance but it got sorted. Not sure what they’re up to but it seems to be a Thing. Phone them up, with figures, be polite but insistent.

monotonousmum · 19/10/2022 06:45

Has someone else moved in to the property? Could they have potentially given EON an incorrect opening meter reading. Either accidently, or on purpose to reduce their own bill.

I've had problems with multiple energy companies, and was starting to think it was me. So now I always take photos of meter readings.

Sapphire387 · 19/10/2022 07:19

EON are shockingly awful. They once set up an account for me and tried to bill me - for an address that wasn't mine and that I have never lived at. £700!! Long story but... sigh. I didn't end up paying it, of course. So do push back at them on this.
