EON are trying to charge me 4K

I just moved house last month and I've been paying eon via direct debit for gas and electricity for the past 2 years.

My account was in credit by over £300 2 months ago and now they've told me I owe £4030 after moving out (majority for electricity.)

How can this be right? I don't understand. It was a one bedroom flat and I used the tv for a few hours a day/ oven on once a day and the washing machine on a few times a week.

What can I do? I feel like this must be a mistake.

Heating was gas

No you would use probably between 6 at a low end, 15 at the higher end.

54kWh is on glue.

Have they programmed your meter incorrectly in their systems and added an extra dial which would x your usage by 10.

Was your heating electric?

This is a good point, when we first moved into a flat together DH and I had never had electric heating before or heard of economy 7. Our first month’s bill was £600…

limitededitionbarbie · 18/10/2022 19:57

For what you are saying you use in terms of appliances etc, this sounds feasible.

No it doesn’t? It’s similar usage to us and we use about 5kWh a day, not 54!

limitededitionbarbie · 18/10/2022 19:58

I mean you have had an extra dial added not that you are using 54kWH a day!

Ah sorry X post!

Can you compare the final meter reading they have put on the bill to what reading you recorded when you moved out? It the reading is way higher then it's clearly wrong. Also see if it has a E next to the reading. This means estimated. They might have just guessed a rate rather then use the one you gave them?

Soriaa · 18/10/2022 20:06

I can't seem to see any number that matches up with my final meter reading on my bill. Where is it normally located?

As you're in a flat could another flat have diverted and tapped into your electricity for cannabis growing? Flat near us caught fire a couple of years ago, they'd diverted electric supply dangerously so no charges.

BowlofNothing · 18/10/2022 20:10

@Soriaa
It should be on the electricity statement page and maybe followed by "closing read" or "final read" and the date you closed your account.
If you can get the information I can do the calculation to check what's happened

There should be a bit on the bill that shows the meter readings keep looking. It might not match that will be why it's too high hopefully

HeyBlaby · 18/10/2022 20:16

I once had electricity bills that suddenly shot up (extra £300/month) Turned out to be a faulty meter and it was replaced and previous bills changed in line with what I used on average. This was only about 5 years ago.

Soriaa · 18/10/2022 20:16

There's nothing about final readings or meter readings on my bill.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2022 20:19

How can they prepare a bill with no readings?
Can you put a picture up with your personal info blacked out

bellabasset · 18/10/2022 20:21

The current average cost quoted is for 2900kw electricity and 12,000kw gas.
Oct 21 £1,271
April 22 £1,971
Oct 22 £2,500

Go through your bills to check that you've paid on actual usage. The cost is based on (a) actual usage at the time it's used so (b) taking accurate meter readings are essential when rates increase and (c) keeping photo's of the readings.

speakingofart · 18/10/2022 20:22

When I moved out Eon tried to charge me £800 then it turned out they owed me £80, then they said I couldn’t take my fix until I pointed them at their own website.

they're shit and it will be a mistake, just keep bothering them .

Bensteeth · 18/10/2022 20:41

That’s about 10x my usage. Two bed flat, WFH, mainly energy-efficient devices/appliances/bulbs for a reference point. Yours sounds improbable. Check that the meter reading entered is correct, if not that I’d be asking for an inspection of the meter.

sandytooth · 18/10/2022 20:45

Soriaa · 18/10/2022 20:16

There's nothing about final readings or meter readings on my bill.

Then contact them for the meter readings. That's very unusual. Are you looking at the PDF statement?

Bensteeth · 18/10/2022 20:46

Just checked what the price cap uses as averages and it is 2,900 kWh per annum which translates to 7.95 kWh per day… they’re suggesting that you as a single person use 5-6x the average family home…

Soriaa · 18/10/2022 20:49

Yes the PDF statement. It's Eon Next if that makes any difference?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 18/10/2022 20:52

Can you screenshot it and black out personal info?
What have they used to calculate the amount you owe?

malmi · 18/10/2022 20:54

All your own readings and you know what the rates are supposed to be. So do the maths and work out how much it should have cost. The final bill should show their breakdown. Check their working.

NotDavidTennant · 18/10/2022 20:55

It sounds like your final reading was entered incorrectly.

RyvitaBrevis · 18/10/2022 20:58

I had a similar problem with a different supplier and it turned out they had input the final meter reading incorrectly.
