Things other people do that irrationally annoy you

What do other people do that makes you really mad even though it really doesn't matter. My mum has made me so cross this morning over something that is meaningless. Logically I know it doesn't matter but I'm fuming. 🤣

The crime? She said that my youngest brother has been with his fiancé longer than I've been with my husband. I started dating my husband before he started school and got married just as he started secondary school so it isn't like she's slightly out. See, doesn't matter and yet grrrr.

Also middle brother announced his engagement at oldest brothers engagement party. Oldest brother and his wife are the most chilled people you have ever met (unlike me clearly) so didn't seem to mind but I was furious as it's such bad form.

Also the cat is a dick. She has several water bowls and fountains but won't use them. Put a mug of water down someone and her head is straight in there. We've taken to leaving water mugs in various places (which inevitable end up getting spilled) and drinking out of lidded travels cups.

@FortheBeautyoftheEarth I hate this throwaway attitude too. I hate it even more when it's a huge, elaborate balloon arch and they say 'anyone want this? Needs gone tonight and it seems a shame to pop it'. Well don't buy the bloody thing then.

Also why does everything always "needs gone" so soon? Can't they just put it in the garage, the shed, or even outside until it can be "got gone".

missmamiecuddleduck · 18/10/2022 21:45

Saying hmm or mmm constantly. I noticed Australian women do this.
Sat down to listen to a recorded lecture for a class and one woman who forgot to turn off her mic hmm hmmm through the entire lecture.

People buying the most hideous clothes/shoes just because it's popular.

Yamalt · 18/10/2022 21:53

Cunts (men) on bikes, using roads.

Cheesecakeitalian · 18/10/2022 21:55

The trend for young women in their early 20s where I live is a long brown leather jacket, 60s psychedelic flares and a crop top. Either that or a very 90s look with a puffa jacket, bootcut jeans and an Ellese t-shirt with hair in a centre parting. Soo many of them dress in exactly the same way just because it's deemed cook or hipster. But just ends up leaving you with zero originality!

My husband cuts his sausages length ways when he eats them with a knife and fork and it drives me insane - no idea why!!

So does he shove the full length in his mouth?

Hibye23289 · 18/10/2022 22:07

People who sneeze or loudly blow their nose in restaurants, just about to tuck into my nice burger and all I can envision is your bubbling snot flying into a tissue!!

Elsamit · 18/10/2022 22:17

People who say, "Somethink," or "Nothink," and the absolute worst...."yous" as a plural... "I hope yous had a lovely holiday!" Aargh😱

SpookyWookyBoo · 18/10/2022 22:18

People who cross the road ,inches from the traffic lights

This one really boils my piss😂
Ordering from a takeaway and there's always one person "who doesn't want anything"
Then tries to mooch food off everyone.
Nope,I'll stab you withy fork if you even look at my grub.

FrangipaniBlue · 18/10/2022 22:18

Car drivers who think I should be on the cycle path and not the road, despite the fact the DfT says if you're going faster that 18mph you should be on the road.

FrangipaniBlue · 18/10/2022 22:20

Also misuse of the word staycation.

This!!!!

A staycation IS NOT A HOLIDAY IN YOUR COUNTRY OF RESIDENCE!!!!

FrangipaniBlue · 18/10/2022 22:22

People who weave when walking on a pavement or footpath.

JUST PICK A SIDE!!!!

TheLostNights · 18/10/2022 22:22
  1. People (usually young) saying 'It's a lot' to explain a difficult situation.
  2. Loud and dramatic sneezing.
  3. Individuals or groups of people who take up the whole pavement so nobody can get around them.
  4. People who have no concept of personal space.
  5. Long queues in clothes shops as one person has decided to return 10 plus items.
  6. Sniffing
Many, many more.
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/10/2022 22:24

Look, I'm a loud sneezer. I don't know why. I don't know how to fix it. I'm very sorry. Blush

I am genuinely intrigued at how others pronounce it now. I'm going to get DP to spell Hotel when he gets in from work 😂

’H’ comes up frequently in Pedants’ Corner. Panino has also come up.

Oh God I agree. "Your" when they mean "you're" is another.

FrangipaniBlue · 18/10/2022 22:44

It's so annoyingly isn't it @Elsamit ??

Where I live that's how it sounds like we say it, that's fine, but for gods sake did none of you go to bloody school??

I know 2 people who do this who are TAs FFS!!!!

Dacquoise · 18/10/2022 22:44

Able-bodied people who lean over the handle of supermarket trollies like it's a horizontal Zimmer frame, and shuffle round the aisles facing downwards.

Elsamit · 18/10/2022 22:51

@FrangipaniBlue

Ha ha ha.🤣 Yes, I totally agree. Apostrophes before every s users also irritate me. I have a real urge to correct. Strawberry's (wrong on more than one level), song's......just NO!

Doggiedoodoos · 19/10/2022 07:21

I am irrationally annoyed that none of the irrational annoyances on this thread are irrational. All completely rational as far as I can tell. Maybe except the mushroom soup cup one....

No, your annoyance is rational. I think the OP meant disproportionately.
I was hoping someone would argue with mine thus demonstrating they were actually irrational, but nobody did so I suppose they must also have been rational.

OhDearODear · 19/10/2022 07:53

The panino one is irrational.

FortheBeautyoftheEarth · 19/10/2022 07:57

People who say 'Pacifically' when they mean specifically. I was at a training course once and a lady kept doing this. I was thinking - we're talking about equality and diversity, why are you bringing oceans into this?!!

veganmayo · 19/10/2022 09:46

losingit31 · 18/10/2022 19:06

People on their phone in a quiet but public place such as a train carriage or cafe who talk loudly in a foreign (to me) language. No idea why it's so much more intrusive than a loud conversion in my language, but it is. I think the fact you can only hear one side of it is part of the issue.

DH and I go to the same coffee shop at the same time most Sundays (he is a creature of habit) and after we've been there about 20 mins a guy comes in who sits near our usual table and watches stuff on his phone with no headphones - grrrr. We are moving house soon so won't go there any more, so won't miss that.

I feel the total opposite! I’d much rather sit near people talking loudly in a language I don’t understand and can therefore ignore. If they’re speaking loudly in English then I can’t help overhearing and listening.

I have a lot of small annoyances, but things that come to mind are:

People walking in cycle lanes or crossing them without looking (happens A LOT in town centres).

People who don’t even try to control the behaviour of their ‘spirited’ children in public even though their screaming and running around in a restaurant is obviously very disruptive and annoying for every other guest. Actually I don’t think that’s irrational at all.

Also people who reject or dismiss anything they can’t understand or relate to (especially certain family members who can’t conceive of how a vaccine works or is developed and then refuse to believe that doctors and scientists can either - because they’re definitely on a level intelligence/experience-wise).

And was it not clear from context that PP’s brother was the one starting school around the same time PP married her husband? Deliberate misunderstanding is quite annoying, too.
