To want a refund for this takeaway!

Trying to work out if I'd be cheeky to ask for a refund for this.

Working late tonight, decided to order a dish to collect from a local restaurant (10 min walk) to collect as a treat to see me through.

Put the order in through the system they use, get an automated text says i'll get an SMS when it's ready to pick up. No way of knowing approximately when which was a bit annoying, but no matter.

Half an hour goes by with no text, I give the restaurant a call. Phone turned off, no option to leave voicemail. 45 mins go by, I send an email to the central team, no answer. I then do a look online, deliveroo says it's not accepting orders which makes me think maybe it's actually closed today and this has been a mistake.

I could walk down, but it's torrentially raining & gale-ing here, I have no text from the restaurant, they haven't called (which I assume they'd do if they had food sitting there waiting for collection) - so assume it's been put through by mistake & I'll get a refund tomorrow.

Two hours after I put the order through - get an email reply saying "as you didn't specific a time it would've been ready in 15 mins. thanks." Predictably this is too short notice for me to get there before it shuts Grin

What do you think? Refund or no refund?

I should add - I've checked my call log and I did try them 6 times as really was worried about my curry Grin

Refund

VerifiedBot2351 · 16/10/2022 21:42

Their system is flawed. You should get a refund.

Auntieobem · 16/10/2022 21:42

Refund definitely

iknowwhatyoudid · 16/10/2022 21:53

So you were going to collect in your first paragraph but then in your third you didn't want to venture out because of the weather?

Clearly there was a miss-communication between you and the restaurant. It happens, either eat your curry or ask politely for a refund.

Discovereads · 16/10/2022 21:59

I would have walked there to pick it up after usual cook time. It was what you’d ordered anyway, a takeaway for pick up. Then you could have spoken to someone if there were any issue beyond a missing “it’s ready text”.

But I’m an oldie, I revert to pre cell phone & text methods when they fail. In old days you’d call in an order and then just show up in a half hour or so.

Well no - I'm happy to do a 25 round trip in the rain when ravenous to collect food, less happy to do so when I've no idea if the place is even open!

I can't eat my curry because the restaurant has shut, but thanks for reminding me about it sitting there Grin

Thank you for the replies everyone!

Yes good point about what you'd do in the pre phone/internet era.

For this case I had no idea about usual cook time - could've been 15 mins, could've been an hour! It must depend on how busy the restaurant is.

If they said you should get a text you should get a text

Surely you’d have some idea as it’s a local restaurant that you have ordered from before? Half hour is a good rule of thumb. If you’re there, it will either be ready or you just have to hang about for 15mins at most. Curries do not take long.

I think the difference is that I hadn't spoken to anyone on the phone, it was just done via a website with no human contact.

I used to order from deliveroo a fair bit and the independent places would really vary (including this specific restaurant) - could be 20 mins, could be 90!

But you'd be able to see before you put you order in, and get confirmation they had accepted the order and live updates so you know what's going on.

I think if they clearly stated you would receive a text, and you didn't receive a text, then I would ask for refund

That is true. Not saying you shouldnt ask for a refund, I just wouldn’t have let my curry go so easily! At only 10min walk away….I’d be over there saying where’s my curry instead of going hungry.

It’s unclear as to whether they actually made your food or not
if it was ready in 15 mins why didn’t they call you if they were shutting up shop for the night

“it would’ve been made” doesn’t mean the restaurant actually made it, the person who responded to your email was probably just going off a standard response script
id definitely push for a refund it’s entirely possible the restaurant never received your order in the first place and you’ve nothing to lose by trying

Trollhunting

I've heard of many types of MN trolls but not a takeaway one Grin Surely there's usually a bit more drama and hand wringing when it comes to troll posters?

I can promise I'm just sitting here working and checking MN, thinking about my missing curry.

There's definitely going to be no drip feeds that the restaurant owner is my ex DPs stepson's niece who I'm NC with, and she's just thrown rice all over my doormat.

For anyone waiting for exciting updates, there won't be any! I did email so hopefully I'll get a refund (and meet my deadline).
