DD wants to spend £800 on concert ticket

DD (17) has just inherited £1800 from the sale of her grandfathers car who recently passed away.
She is autistic, and has special interests which change after around a year or so.

At the moment it's Taylor Swift, which is the concert she wants to buy a ticket for next year. She reckons it will cost £800 for a 'pit' ticket, where you will (might) be close to the stage.

In a few years, she will need to buy a car, and also needs a laptop.

How would you feel if this was you?
She is quite right when she says it's her money, she can spend it how she likes, but I think it is such a waste of a lot of money.

I remember my parents in the 60’s deciding not to get tickets to see The Beatles because the tickets were expensive and the queue was long, we all regretted that.

Endlesslaundry123 · 16/10/2022 22:14

Correction: Not a *life-changing amount of money

Alarm59 · 16/10/2022 22:17

It sure as hell won’t be Taylor’s last tour for a start 🤪
£800 is disgusting, I paid that for front row hours meet & greet with another artist of her calibre. I feel I got my moneys worth, but to be in a pit area and that’s it? No way

Blueeyedgirl21 · 16/10/2022 22:22

I’ve seen Taylor swift live twice , I’m a fan but they’re not particularly memorable concerts, she’s not a big showman and doesn’t have a powerful voice IMO she’s better listened to in the car on a road trip or on vinyl with a glass of wine on a chilly afternoon

I think your dd is mad to spend that but maybe just let her crack on and have it as a lesson learned, in a few years she won’t have the money to spend like that as she will have responsibilities

I wouldn’t be buying her a car any time soon though if she’s choosing to spend this, I’d probably ask her to save up for it and just say well you had the money and you spend it

ChimneyPot · 16/10/2022 22:26

Is she planning on going alone if she manages to get a ticket? Are any of her friends going to pay £800.

Would she consider going to see TS somewhere in Europe instead? With a cheap RyanAir flight it can work out less expensive and it can be easier to get pit tickets.

My DD and friends are going to see Harry Styles somewhere in Germany because they wanted pit tickets.

Fluffymule · 16/10/2022 22:40

I know someone at Ticketmaster. They get so annoyed when people talk of Ticketmaster employing dynamic pricing to drive up pricing for fans to ridiculous levels.

It is the artist, and their management team, that decides on ticket pricing and whether dynamic pricing is used, not Ticketmaster. They act on instruction only.

I'd be shocked if Taylor decided to use dynamic pricing to see tickets rise to £800+. She will have seen some of the backlash artists like Springsteen and Styles got by using it; but also I think she's pretty fan focused and wouldn't want to abuse that trust. She'll make serious millions anyway.

CornishTiger · 16/10/2022 22:48

Was it definitely Bruce Springsteen’s choice to use dynamic pricing. That’s pissed me right off if so.

Stopsnowing · 16/10/2022 22:49

Surely 800 would be a resale price?

Shinyhappyperson22 · 16/10/2022 22:53

Theowlwhowasafraid · 16/10/2022 18:42

i wouldn’t guess they would be £800?? Decent seats at her stadium tour a few years ago we’re about £70 and I think VIP standing was around the £150-£200 mark. I could be wrong though! She’s bloody good though and worth seeing if she’s into her but £800 is ridiculous. I doubt very much they will be that much!

We now have the delights of surge pricing so you pay more when tickets are popular!

7eleven · 16/10/2022 22:53

I think it’s a brilliant thing to spend the money on (hopefully not £800!).

She’s young and she’s reckless…and remember it forever.

Yes, like it says in that article you linked to:

"Ticketmaster does not determine pricing. Promoters and artist representatives set pricing strategy and price range parameters on all tickets, including dynamic and fixed price points."

But it's been very widely reported elsewhere too. My friend got into a few heated debates with friends who are parents of a big Harry Styles fan about this too!

KatherineJaneway · 16/10/2022 23:09

What is her aim? To see Taylor up close or just be at the gig,?

Newcatbrowntail · 16/10/2022 23:10

Just think if it was The Beatles or Elvis, you’d pay that. This might be the experience of a lifetime for her.
what’s a waste of money for one person is a Aragon for another

Newcatbrowntail · 16/10/2022 23:10

*is a bargain

Newcatbrowntail · 16/10/2022 23:11

PickAnyName · 16/10/2022 23:17

Far too much to spend! If you really wanted to stop her you might be able to check whether it was left for her when she reaches 18. Otherwise, if you are confident she is safe to go, providing she realises you won’t be replacing this money if she needs it for something else, let her go.

shazshaz · 16/10/2022 23:18

I think her last tickets sold at a max of £350 but maybe your dd is thinking of some special VIP experience. My DD is also autistic and a Taylor Swift fan. She has just got herself a part time job so she has the money to buy a ticket when they are released. Apparently when the time comes all computers and phones in the house are going to be logged on trying to get her a ticket. I have happy memories of going to great concerts so I think there are worse ways to spend money.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 17/10/2022 00:33

She has a whole lifetime to “earn” back that £800. Plus she’s 17 and it’s her inheritance. I don’t see how you can dictate anything, it’s up to her. Let her do it.

What a sensible and empathetic comment.

BretonBlue · 17/10/2022 06:34

OT but I didn’t realise that there was such a strong connection between TS and ND communities.

It's an awful practice and I was really disappointed with Bruce. We're going as I'd already booked the hospitality tickets and they were a set price. There's no way I would bought tickets using 'dynamic pricing'. I'm resigned to the fact this could be the last concert I go to.

Redkettle · 17/10/2022 07:43

Obviously I don't know but i suspect her grandad will want her to have fun with it . I can imagine if t was my parents they'd tell me to butt out its her money lol

Whycanineverever · 17/10/2022 19:38

According to my TS obsessed daughter TS announced something about a chaotic announcement on Friday when Midnight comes out....the ticketmaster CEO also tweeted referencing chaotically so she is thinking a tour announcement is on the cards......

shazshaz · 17/10/2022 22:36

My DD says the same thing. She thinks if you have pre-ordered the new release in any format it gives you some kind of access code. I have no idea if she's right or not but I'm officially in her good books because I pre-ordered a cd for a Christmas present. She thinks the announcement is at 8am.

JustLurkingAway · 17/10/2022 22:41

Yep a tour is confirmed now as you can preorder cds etc on her website before Friday and get a presale code for the tour.

The website immediately crashedGrin
