Brackets

I know I'm being unreasonable, and probably judgemental too, and that there are far, far bigger things in life to worry about, but please for the love of all things holy can someone tell me why people put a space before, and often after, brackets?

You don't see it in novels, reference books, magazines, journals, newspapers or any other printed literature, so why do so many people do this?

Is it some kind of autocorrect thing, a weird social media contagion or is it actually correct and I've been using brackets wrongly my whole life?

like [this] ? Instead of[this]?

FlibbertyGiblets · 16/10/2022 13:18

Because I do [this]. Not[this] .

TeenDivided · 16/10/2022 13:19

You really haven't be clear (i.e. I'm not sure what you think is right) but I do brackets like this.

FlibbertyGiblets · 16/10/2022 13:20

Obvs using square brackets because I am a twat though if challenged I would airily say oh sq br for clarity, doncha know. Grin

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 16/10/2022 13:22

What are you talking about?
It's grammatically correct (and appropriate for ease of reading) to have spaces before and after brackets.

TeenDivided · 16/10/2022 13:25

Or are you saying people ( who don't know any better ) do brackets as in this sentence?

CuriousCatfish · 16/10/2022 13:25

It looks too bunched up(if you don't leave a space)before and after.

AlisonDonut · 16/10/2022 13:25

I think you have been using them wrong your whole life.

Brackets used in words are not the same as brackets used in maths.

😂Yes, I am a total moron and didn't even explain what I meant properly. Yes, I mean after the opening bracket or before the closing one.

Sorry!

Yep, I haven't been clear at all. Humble apologies.

Still, at least everyone has so far concurred with what I meant to say (but didn't).

Sorry OP ,I'm sure I'm an offender .I do it because I think it looks nicer .Less claustrophobic.

Well given the placement of your commas and full stops, that doesn't surprise me at all!

Was that really necessary?

peridito · 16/10/2022 14:15

Yes ,I've come across your disapproving comments before . Smile

My typing finger seems to have a mind of it's own ,sort of Tourettes .

peridito · 16/10/2022 14:17

Oh dear ,sorry about the apostrophe !

I can't work out now if you are mucking about with your punctuation, or being serious. Grin It's certainly unusual.

The answer to the question in the OP is this:

The do it because the are intellectually inferior to you and, therefore, should be ashamed of themselves. They should also be so very, very grateful that somebody as wonderful as you has taken time out of their busy schedule to help them.

That' the answer you want isn't it?

I thought I'd made enough disclaimers in my OP and subsequent posts to preempt this sort of humourless response. Clearly not.

Says the pot to the kettle.
At least pp has used a comma where it's needed.

It was meant to be teasing, and I genuinely apologise if that didn't come across.
