They’re the sort of words that would be humorous and horrifying if they were rarely used but they’re so widely used on here, Twitter etc that they just come across as old hat and excruciatingly twee to me.

OP posts:
Hmmph · 16/10/2022 14:23

Isn't Methinks used by Shakespeare? "Methinks the lady doth protest too much"?

Scautish · 16/10/2022 14:29

Cockwomble's a perfectly normal Scottish word

shite! It’s not a Scottish word FFS!

but the point is that whatever the origin, these phrases are trotted out by some posters who think they are being humorous/insightful/clever when they are actually just a bit wearisome.

PBSam · 16/10/2022 14:32

Cockwomble is pathetic. Just call them a cunt ffs

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 16/10/2022 14:33

I like shit show and cluster fuck.

I hate "asshat".

CandyLeBonBon · 16/10/2022 14:35

Methinks has been used for centuries so I'm not sure why pp think it's new? Blame Chaucer and Shakespeare!

Marigoldandivy · 16/10/2022 14:54

Before coming on MN I had never heard the phrase ‘picky tea’. For some reason that sets my teeth on edge.

HappyHamsters · 16/10/2022 14:59

Oh yes, picky tea, naice, hubby, unMn hug, PMSL all really grate on me.

TizzyTruss · 16/10/2022 15:06

Nothing wrong with a (Tory) shitshow or a (Prime Ministerial) twatbadger. I always read CF as Cunty Fucker.

No is a complete sentence, Did you mean to be so rude? Etc. are nasty and twee

Ontobetterthings · 16/10/2022 15:11

Learnt a wide vocabulary on mumsnet. Humblebragging being one example.

How?

Abitofalark · 16/10/2022 15:21

It's just lifted from America. Nothing original about it. The second one I don't know what it is or where it's from. The enthusiasm for swearing is worn like a very middle class sort of swagger.

Flowerpower36 · 16/10/2022 15:31

“Who dis” annoys me beyond belief.

and “hella”

Flowerpower36 · 16/10/2022 15:32

“Naice”… sorry stupid question but what does this mean?! I’ve seen it on here before but always just thought it was people mistyping “nice”?!

PortiasBiscuit · 16/10/2022 15:37

I am a big fan of “clusterfuck” myself.

HappyHamsters · 16/10/2022 15:39

Naice ham is ham that is not all pale, fatty, wet and soggy, something like cooked brunswick and not the cheapest supermarket brand. Hyacinth Bouquet and Margot from the Good Life lived in naice areas and had naice houses.

georgarina · 16/10/2022 15:41

Shitshow is fine. Totally agree re cockwomble and other overused 'funny' terms like crotch goblin, thundercunt etc. They're supposed to be hilarious and quirky but they're just overdone and irritating.

Unicorn2022 · 16/10/2022 15:44

I like shitshow. I've only ever heard cockwomble mentioned on here and hate it. I did hear someone at work use the term cocklodger last week and that surprised and amused me. I like cocklodger but not womble.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 16/10/2022 15:49

I cannot stand the tweeness of cockwomble and wankpuffin and all that silliness. It's the kind of shite people would have embroidered on bunting and think they're being edgy whilst also being so charmingly British.

Shitshow is fine though and does not belong in the cockwomble category.

I'm sure most people are aware that 'methinks' isn't new, but old things can be annoying too. It's often used in a prissy and condescending way.

Methinks is old and irritating and 'simples' is new and irritating. God, I fucking hate 'simples'.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/10/2022 15:59

I simply can't imagine being so distressed by inoffensive slang terms used by other people that I would feel compelled to start a whinge thread about it. Now, if you were referring to actual abuse or hate speech... Maybe direct your outrage to the women being threatened with rape over Twitter, or the black footballers having bananas thrown at them during games rather than someone using a frankly excellent word like cockwomble

7eleven · 16/10/2022 16:12

Calling everyone narcissists is getting very annoying.

greatestgoatofalltime · 16/10/2022 16:36

'mahoosive' annoyed me recently

midsomermurderess · 16/10/2022 16:37

I quite agree with handhold. It’s n immediate prompt for me to hide a thread.

WildFlowerBees · 16/10/2022 16:59

'Sets my teeth on edge' is amongst the most ridiculous sayings you only ever see on here along with cockwomble.

I don't mind shitshow or clusterfuck.

Yes, starting a forum thread on one subject definitely means you are not interested in any other subjects. Very good point.

Obviously I (and I should think everyone else here) knows that 'methinks' is not a new word - surprisingly I was referring not to Shakespeare and his contemporaries, but to the sort of total dickhead (or cockwomble, if you will) that uses it in conversation in the present day. Sorry that wasn't absolutely screamingly fucking obvious.
