They’re the sort of words that would be humorous and horrifying if they were rarely used but they’re so widely used on here, Twitter etc that they just come across as old hat and excruciatingly twee to me.

I’m Scottish, those aren’t words they’re punctuation 😂

Lunificent · 16/10/2022 10:37

Hand hold I don’t mind.,wouldn’t use it myself but don’t feel anything visceral about anyone else using it.

C*ckwomble is a personal favourite, which I make no apologies for.

Hubby can die a death though. I also dislike the term "hand hold" it really sets my teeth on edge!

@Midnights if it's a personal favourite, why don't you spell it out properly then, rather than the coy use of an asterisk?!

Seemsok · 16/10/2022 10:38

Have never heard the word cockwomble ! Shitshow is a great description of the Tory party .

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 16/10/2022 10:39

Shitshow, cockwomble, clusterfuck, twinkletwat - all great words! 😂

Sparklingbrook · 16/10/2022 10:41

What does 'Twinkletwat' mean?

What does 'Twinkletwat' mean?

It's the new vajazzle, don't you know?

Sparklingbrook · 16/10/2022 10:42

BIWI · 16/10/2022 10:41

It's the new vajazzle, don't you know?

Is it? Grin I need someone to put it in a sentence for me for context.

HappyHamsters · 16/10/2022 10:43

I have never heard twinkletwat but love it. I prefer a cockwomble to a hubby any day and baby steps drive me mad.

Hoolihan · 16/10/2022 10:45

I really detest 'cockwomble' and assume it's only used by the type of person that also uses 'methinks'.

Hoolihan · 16/10/2022 10:49

Boris is not a 'cockwomble', unless you actually believe his amiable/blundering clown act. He's a deeply enitiled, unpleasant and ruthless egotist.

How does one define that type of person?

They use the words cockwomble and methinks.

TootsAtOwls · 16/10/2022 10:55

People who use words like "cockwomble" and "arsebadger" are always so very pleased with themselves for being so clever and funny

It's very boring

ElleEmDee · 16/10/2022 10:55

I love shitshow. I can use it freely at work whereas I couldn’t get away with clusterfuck.

And that's all?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 16/10/2022 11:02

Shitshow is used a lot by me and my colleagues as it pretty accurately describes a tough day at our workplace. It’s not particularly meant to be humerous or horrifying, just descriptive. Shitshow is now in the dictionary so don’t think it’s a particularly contentious word?

Never heard cockwomble in real life or seen it used in context on Mumsnet outside of threads like these where people share words they hate.

7catsisnotenough · 16/10/2022 11:07

Doesn't James May say cockwomble? I'm sure one of the Top Gear presenters used it back when it was Clarkson, Hammond and May

Scautish · 16/10/2022 11:10

I’ve noticed on here that phrases become popular and then everyone has to use them to feel like they are in the gang. I’ve noticed ones like

”I’d call you a cunt but you lack the warms and depth”

”are you on glue?”

“no my circus, not my monkey”

etc etc

none remotely amusing (IMO) but reused with pride and glee by many on here.

I think conforming is something that makes many posters here feel secure? But that’s me being an armchair psychologist.

AutumnCrow · 16/10/2022 11:12

Rule of thumb: would Malcom Tucker shout it at Nicola Murray?

Yes? Then it's a splendid term.

butterfliedtwo · 16/10/2022 11:16

The world's pretty much a shitshow lately though. Accurate description of many things.
It's not meant to be humourous.

SkiingIsHeaven · 16/10/2022 11:16

I hate cock lodger

Love this! Excellent rule.
