To think Jo Frost (Supernanny) was wrong to post inflammatory comments

Jo Frost shared this on her FB page. I’m
not sure why, I was quite baffled by it. Surely she knows that parents of children with asd/adhd/ocd will be offended at the suggestion that they are chasing a label for their child? Not sure what she was trying to achieve with this!

She’s right. People are desperate for an excuse for their child’s naughtiness. It then absolves them of any responsibility.

Yes, I agree.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 14/10/2022 22:46

Two of my boys are autistic, one also has ADHD. Neither of them are naughty. Neither of them has been in trouble at school/college. Neither of them got diagnosed because they were naughty. They got diagnosed because they needed support, and especially with my youngest with adhd, to help him understand himself.

And then people like her hear ADHD and think he's some terrible kid who's disruptive and hyperactive. He's not, he's inattentive, so usually in a world of his own and needing a nudge and extra help to stay focussed.

HoHoHowMuch · 14/10/2022 22:47

Plenty of parents seek a medical diagnosis for their children. I don't know anyone seeking a "label". I don't agree with all of her techniques by a long way, but the back to bed thing really helped.

SeasonsHeatings · 14/10/2022 22:47

Not all children with ADHD or the others are "naughty" we're not all looking for excuses for our kids behaviour and wanting to chuck pills at them. ADHD is a lot more than that.

She wasn't referring to your child 🤷🏻‍♀️

asdadult · 14/10/2022 22:49

As a person with ASD and ADD who has been diagnosed as an adult I am glad to finally have a label and know it's not just me and that I couldn't have tried harder and if I'd just behaved better I wouldn't have been so naughty.

Why do you think neurodevelopmental disability is the same thing as naughtiness? You don't just rock up at the assessment clinic and say you want your child diagnosed then walk away with one. There is an established diagnostic process with benchmarks for diagnosis and all assessment and observational evidence goes before a clinical decision making panel.

SeasonsHeatings · 14/10/2022 22:51

Are we going to stop giving kids other medical labels too?

Oh you have diabetes? Nope. Not anymore. No more labels.

Oh what's that, you're deaf? Nope, no labels. We're just going to call you ignorant now. You're obviously just pretending not to hear.

babysharksb1tch · 14/10/2022 22:52

@Johnnysgirl she wasn't referring to that posters child no, but she might as well have been.

It's a deliberately inflammatory statement aimed at ND children. Quite sickening really.

I read through the read of her post attached to it, which is nowhere near as disturbing as the highlight posted above.

Exactly this point.

asdadult · 14/10/2022 22:54

She's ableist going on that statement.

Nobody thinks that, you've completely missed the point.

AppleKatie · 14/10/2022 22:55

It strikes me as a goady post by a women desperately trying to stay in the limelight.

Her tv programmes were entertainment not serious attempts at bettering childrens lives and in hindsight borderline abusive to show minors like that before they are of an age to give informed consent. They haven’t aged well, although initially I did watch them.

I never thought she was particularly well qualified/innovative though (because if she had of been she wouldn’t have made the programme) and her lack of knowledge does show in them.

That attitude makes me want to weep.

I spent my childhood being punished for autistic behaviours because my parents thought I was 'naughty'. Not their fault because in the 70s/80s, working class families didn't know autism existed. However, that has done deep and lasting damage to me, which, now I have been diagnosed, I am trying to come to terms with. Not to put to fine a point on it, the failure to diagnose me in childhood has caused me serious mental health issues throughout my life.

We should be jumping for joy that nowadays, children are getting diagnosed even though their parents often have to jump through hoops and endure lengthy waiting lists.

If Jo Frost did an iota of research she would learn that neurodivergence is still under diagnosed, especially in girls.

She should hang her head in shame.

I think it's unasseptible

😂

JamSandle · 14/10/2022 22:55

I don't think that's what she's saying. We know there are genuine conditions but there are some people who chase a label so to speak.

asdadult · 14/10/2022 22:56

Same @BoardLikeAMirror

I do like jo frost though

FarmerRefuted · 14/10/2022 22:57

I feel like Jo Frost is at the point of her career where saying controversial shite is her only way to keep her name known. Her TV show was exploitative, particularly in the way it treated children with behavioural issues and neurodivergent conditions, and parenting has moved on since but her outdated techniques have not.

pinkolu · 14/10/2022 22:42

@Sparklingbrook not as nasty as her post

@pinkolu two wrongs don't make a right!

@SeasonsHeatings comment on her body is nasty & unnecessary. Comment on what she said for sure, but her body, nah, not at all relevant.

NDMum · 14/10/2022 22:57

She practices ABA so nothing surprises me with that B!
