It’s agony! Like being sliced with razors every time I swallow. Genuinely scared whenever I cough because it’s so painful. Have taken painkillers. What else can I do to make it feel better?

Nothing beats hot toddys in my opinion. And ibuprofen if you can take it.

7Worfs · 12/10/2022 15:41

Lemon (or orange, if you can’t tolerate sourness)
Honey
Soothers

walkingonsunshinekat · 12/10/2022 15:43

Chew a clove of garlic, with a teaspoon of manuka honey and lemon juice, & paracetamol.

Stay hydrated.

I swear by Strepsils. They come in various flavours but I always buy the one with the mild antiseptic

BerryPeachy · 12/10/2022 15:47

Hot lemonade

FlorettaB · 12/10/2022 15:48

Honey is good. Alternating hot and cold can help too - hot water with lemon and honey or iced water.

It’s bit kill or cure but I gargle with corsodyl mouthwash if I have a sore throat in the hope that it will kill off any bugs.

Pixiedust1234 · 12/10/2022 15:48

not antiseptic, anaesthetic!!

bridgetreilly · 12/10/2022 15:49

Thanks, everyone. Not sure I can bring myself to chew garlic! But the rest are already in play.

Strepsils, then honey and lemon juice in hot water in between

Flockameanie · 12/10/2022 15:50

When I had an awful sore throat I found normal hard sweets better than strepsils for easing it. Also gargling with salt water. And you can get an antiseptic type sore throat gargle from the chemist which helped too.

tulips27 · 12/10/2022 15:51

Pepsi max.

Crabbyboot · 12/10/2022 15:53

Hydrogen peroxide mixed with water gargled. Sounds dangerous but it brings up all the infection, I think it's an antiseptic!

tenbob · 12/10/2022 15:53

Marshmallows..!

i know, I know, but it does work

I first read it on here on a thread about how to help a sort throat when you’re pregnant and can’t take OTC medication and it really worked

I think it’s just the gelatine coating your throat, but however it works, it’s a lot more pleasant to eat them than Strepsils

(Haribo/American style ones don’t work. Needs to be trad supermarket slightly sticky ones)

ShineOnYouLikeMorningStar · 12/10/2022 15:53

I was recommended to use a few drops of tea tree essential oil in water as a gargle for sore throats as a teenager. IDK how but it does seem to help & in fact the Australian Tea Tree Oil Association does recommend this. Obviously it's up to you whether you do it but I've found it quite beneficial. Beware though, as most people find the smell fairly unpleasant, IDK how they cope with gargling it. Personally I rather like it.

Dotjones · 12/10/2022 15:54

Listerine for me, plus whisky in evening.

VatofTea · 12/10/2022 15:54

gargle in mouthwash

InCheesusWeTrust · 12/10/2022 15:54

Do you have white spots? Because that bitch doesn't go away even with garlic!
Priessnitz wrap helps to calm it all down

afaloren · 12/10/2022 15:56

Are you sure you don’t need antibiotics?

SatinHeart · 12/10/2022 15:57

Strepsils (the extra ones not the standard ones)

Gargle with soluble aspirin then swallow it (obv don't do this if you've already taken aspirin/ibuprofen)

Large quantities of hot honey and lemon, hot squash or hot orange juice

ShineOnYouLikeMorningStar · 12/10/2022 15:57

@tenbob AFAIK marshmallow root is a traditional remedy for sore throats & coughs... IDK how many brands of marshmallow sweets would include real marshmallow root these days though.

Noddy21 · 12/10/2022 15:58

Difflam spray! It’s the best thing and numbs it

Onthebrink87 · 12/10/2022 15:58

Dispersible aspirin! If you can take it (not asthmatic or have any stomach issues - and not on an empty stomach) 2 to 3 dissolved in some water, gargle for as long as you can manage then swallow! Up to 3 times a day - no other nsaids e.g ibuprofen alongside, but can also use paracetamol alongside.

It's the only thing that helped my sore throat other than a spray like difflam.

Mum5net · 12/10/2022 16:00

I saw these on Twitter yesterday …
Google Honey Lemon Ginger Throat Drops or Cough Drops
No idea if you feel well enough to make them but they looked fab. Hope you feel well soon

NorthernSoul55 · 12/10/2022 16:00

Soluble aspirin gargle, then sip it slowly. Warm water and tcp gargle, but don't drink it!
Also there's a spray that's good.. Difflam, I think it's called.
