Request to look around my flat

I just had a knock on the door- it was a couple. The man said maybe they have the wrong place...

Turns out they were looking to buy the flat above mine but no one answered the door so they wondered if (the wife) could look around my flat instead.

Er... no. Sorry.

I guess they might have been genuine, but it seemed very weird. I don't even know if the flat above is selling.

I'd have said no! What's the point? If they're the same floorplan the measurements are online.

EL8888 · 12/10/2022 12:22

That’s weird. I would have said no as well

Sixsmith · 12/10/2022 12:22

Did you ever watch the Luther episode where the serial killer gets in the flat with a similar sort of tale? I never forgot that. Scared the crap out of me. Never let anyone in uninvited or without identity check.

girlmom21 · 12/10/2022 12:35

People are really weird!

tectonicplates · 12/10/2022 12:39

Potentially could've been an attempted burglary.

AnApparitionQuipped · 12/10/2022 12:41

Have a look on Rightmove to see if the upstairs one is for sale. I wouldn't have let them in either, even if I knew the other flat was on the market.

starfishmummy · 12/10/2022 12:50

How strange, but yanbu to refuse. Distraction burglary would be my suspicion - one of them chatting to you while the other needs the loo and snoops round for valuables instead.

dirtyasadustpanlid · 12/10/2022 13:03

God, I probably would have let them come to think about it.

How stupid is that? I will remember this thread if it ever happens!!

Johnnysgirl · 12/10/2022 13:05

What a cheek!

MissSouri · 12/10/2022 13:06

No way!

Bzzz · 12/10/2022 13:32

I would immediately find out if the flat is for sale, and if not would definitely notify the police. I would be tempted to either way

2bazookas · 12/10/2022 13:43

Casing the joint before break in.

HundredMilesAnHour · 12/10/2022 13:49

So they didn't even have an appt to view the flat upstairs?! They just randomly turned up?! And then tried their luck on you? They're either batshit and not people you'd want as neighbours or they're dodgy and up to no good.

Had this about 4 years ago after we brought our place and next door is identical the only two like it on the street but was falling down and in a terrible state

The estate agent asked Dp as they spotted him coming in and he said yes!
Came round to the door and I sent them off with stern words and and warned them that the dog was about to be turned loose 😂
Gsd we had at the time was big and scary looking but a cuddle bug they didn't need to know that

sandytooth · 12/10/2022 13:55

There is a song call 'house that built me' which is a lovely song about a woman returning to her sold childhood home and asking to look around.

As the chorus says 'If I could just come in, I swear I'll leave, Won't take nothin' but a memory, From the house that built me' which is sweet in the song but in reality its a big 'Fuck no... go away' lol.

You can't just show up at someone house and expect to wander in and look around.

Quite. I recently showed my husband the outside of a house I lived in about 25 years ago and I was very wary even then that someone might think we were 'casing the joint' as I pointed out where the different rooms were from our vantage point on the pavement. Wouldn't have dreamed of ringing the bell to go inside.
