Shall I just go to A&E…

I have been having upper right abdomen pain since Saturday (currently a full ache) temp around 40.4 comes down to 39.2 with some tablets, I feel sick and woozy had horrific bowel movement

pain come and goes in waves when it’s bad I can’t move, hurts to breathe, can’t stomach food cause immense pain…been taking tramadol and it’s not touching it!

pain got really really bad yesterday each wave lasted around 2 hours, dh phoned 111…after 9 hours they still hadn’t called back, phoned again at 6…was phoned back at 10pm asking me to go to urgent care for an appointment at 10.30pm which was impossible as I live an hour away…they then told me they had no other appointments and was told to call my Gp or go to a&e if it got worse

doped up on tramadol again and got about 4 hours sleep

attempted to contact my Gp 33 times…finally spoke to a receptionist and all she would offer me was an appointment in 7-10 days

phoned 111 to be told to contact my Gp as they were open

literally it’s my last resort do I just turn up? Pain has been ramping up again for the last 15 mins I can’t keep shoving tramadol down my throat but I don’t want to be sat in a&e in agony while nothing happens and I’m left in a chair like last time

Well that was a very coherent post for someone in such pain. I liked the punctuation, it really added to the urgency…

what would be an acceptable typing style for someone in pain? really, I’m asking

She has. “Sounds like a gallbladder infection, you need antibiotics”. Literally told her she needs antibiotics. Yes of course it “could be” a gallbladder infection, could equally be a thousand other things. The op doesn’t need Dr Mumsnet telling her what treatment she needs.

So your theory is that the OP is going to go to the doctor and demand antibiotics because a random poster on MN said so? That seems unlikely.

BigChesterDraws · 10/10/2022 23:46

Last time? This has happened before?

Who prescribed Tramadol and for what diagnosis? What was the follow-up plan for that?

wow....judgey? Ive nursed patients who are journalists who were in agony and still managing to type out their story which had to go off before they went into surgery. Doing things that take your mind off the pain is incredibly helpful.

antelopevalley · 10/10/2022 22:16

Your GP is disgraceful. Once this is over I would make a complaint.
Go to A and E. You need to get this checked out.

I agree with antelopevalley, once you are home and better, please send your posting to your GP practice manager, together with a formal complain and copy both to the Care Quality Commission who oversee GP practices.

Huntswomanonthemove · 11/10/2022 00:22

I’m so glad you’ve gone to A & E, I hope you get seen quickly and they sort you out. When I had pain in my upper abdomen, the receptionist told me to come to the GP surgery straight away. It was my gall bladder, and the GP treated me but did a referral as well. I subsequently had a cholecystectomy. This was about six years ago. The NHS and especially the GP provision has gone to hell in a handcart.

Do let us know how you get on @Igo 💐

Hollyhobbi · 11/10/2022 00:31

Ex nurse here. Why are you on Tramadol? That's a strong painkiller. I've had it twice, once for sciatica (didn't touch the pain) and post op after an emergency abdominal hysterectomy. I've had two DVTs so can't take antiimflamatories hence the tramadol. Hope you aren't waiting too long in A and E.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/10/2022 00:33

Yes, temp alone justifies it. Could be sepsis which isn’t to be ignored.

Plantmum2047 · 11/10/2022 05:16

A&E nurse here - definitely an A&E job and I'm glad you went. Hope you're okay and feeling lots better soon!

maddening · 11/10/2022 05:43

Best of luck op x

YukoandHiro · 11/10/2022 05:44

How are you OP?

Darbs76 · 11/10/2022 06:10

Hope you’re ok OP.

the person commenting about typing up this post when in pain, the OP said it was coming in waves, and she actually said it was currently a dull ache when she typed this. Also yep agree what the heck has punctuation got to do with anything? Poster needs to get a life, pathetic attempt to judge

kateandme · 11/10/2022 06:37

Hope your ok op.
if anything you need to get off the tramadol.that is not one to be on for for a period of time.nor will it help with certain symptoms as it can have symptoms in itself.

iloveeverykindofcat · 11/10/2022 07:12

I've had acute pancreatitis (once, for unknown reasons, and it never happened again) and I could've typed that (slowly) in between the pain attacks. It also came in waves, during some of which I was actually throwing up. But in between I could've typed it. Anyway, hope OP gets timely treatment.

olympicsrock · 11/10/2022 07:24

This was never a GP job - they are there to assess chronic conditions and refer for specialist opinions see and minor things that can usually wait 24- 48 hours.
This is major and an emergency - she is acutely unwell. It is very clearly an A and E job . GP’s simply do not have the capacity or equipment to assess and treat people who are extremely unwell.
Please give the poor GPs who are massively overworked a break.

Igo · 11/10/2022 07:28

Thank you everyone I’m glad I went

I have been admitted onto the surgical assessment unit (finding a bed has been the issue, they even tried the other hospital which was also full)

I was in a&e until around 6am and was told they found a bed. Bloods have been done and a few other things awaiting those results, lots of pain meds given so at least it doesn’t hurt too much. It’s gallbladder related.

regards to the pain it’s like a dull ache which is permanently there, followed by what I call waves of pain that completely render me unable to move. when it’s a dull ache it’s around a 4 when it’s full on wave it’s around a 10.

tramadol was for another issue I have, I rarely use it as I don’t like how it makes me feel but I needed it this time.

I’m glad your sorted I’ve had the same and it’s coming in woman around their 40’s . you feel a whole lot better when people take you seriously!

Fingers crossed it’ll calm down and you’ll be given advice on a fat free diet to keep it at bay - waiting an operation or they may just operate. It’s key hole now and a quick recovery.

saying that with 3 young kids at home I was glad if the rest in hospital.

Do you know something we don't? I haven't seen an update from the OP since they left for the hospital?

HelloDaisy · 11/10/2022 07:43

Glad you have got it diagnosed and the right pain relief. With that level of pain a&e is the best place to go.

Tillow4ever · 11/10/2022 07:45

Ignore my last comment - I clicked a notification and it didn't show half the responses that are actually on the thread!

Note to self, click directly into the app next time.

Glad you got seen and diagnosed etc Op

Igo · 11/10/2022 07:46

The nurse who did my paperwork on the ward said I’m the first person the surgeon will be seeing I have no idea how long that may be

OP posts:
Wordwatcher · 11/10/2022 07:53

@Igo

Hope you feel better very soon and hope the surgeon will seeing you very soon. Glad you have pain relief in the meantime; you’ve had quite a rough time of it.

Best wishes 🌷🌷🌷

MrsPerfect12 · 11/10/2022 07:56

Hope things start moving for you this morning.
good luck with the surgeon

AgathaMystery · 11/10/2022 08:31
