To think swimwear is a basic year round purchase?

I forgot DS’s granny had asked to take him swimming and left the house without his swim shorts. Once I remembered, it was easier to buy a cheap pair than dash back home again… or so I thought.

I tried Asda, Matalan and Morrisons with no luck. He ended up with a wetsuit from the middle of Aldi which was excellent value at £4.99 but is probably going to look a bit odd at the pool (he won’t care about that).

Surely swimming is a year round basic activity, especially for children. I’m really surprised I couldn’t find any swimwear.

It is…. In a sports shop. Did you try sports direct or decathlon or something? Supermarkets don’t sell things all year round.

Hellocatshome · 08/10/2022 17:07

Any sports shops would have had them.

Bzzz · 08/10/2022 17:08

Surely you go to a sports store for a swimsuit, regardless of season. Thet are always available at a sports store

Lockheart · 08/10/2022 17:09

Any sports shop will have them. Supermarkets and fashion retailers, not so much.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 08/10/2022 17:10

I agree OP. Drives me nuts, not everyone has a sports store nearby and you pay a lot more when all you want is a basic cossie or shorts. They sell trainers all year round in supermarkets so I don't buy the seasonal argument. Swimming isn't a summer only activity.

MangosteenSoda · 08/10/2022 17:12

I just went to the 4 nearest shops. It’s not something I’d planned ahead. If a sport shop had been in the vicinity, it would have been my first port of call. I’m not too surprised about the supermarkets, but I am surprised that Matalan had none (they had adult swimwear).

Supermarkets usually have them year round in with the school stuff. They're plain black or navy but they do if there's no other choice.

MrsT84 · 08/10/2022 17:16

Well I couldn't manage to get my 7 year old a decent pair of trunks for swimming lessons in April in the sport shop or any supermarkets! They had girls costumes in Asda in the school uniform aisle but nothing for boys. Ended up getting some in TK Max. Considering swimming is mandatory from primary age it was very frustrating!

It had all gone. Obviously there are loads of disorganised parents like me looking for last minute swimwear who must have swept it all up.

Argos/Tu was my surprised discovery for swimwear

Icouldbehappy · 08/10/2022 17:23

Agreed. I was looking in M&S the other day but they said they had none.
I really want a bikini because once I have been in the gym and I’m hot, I find it difficult to get my swimsuit on.
Plus, if I have a bikini, it will make me more aware of my stomach and hopefully help me not to put back on the vast amount of weight that I’ve lost 😂

MermaidSwimming · 08/10/2022 17:24

I tried to get D's swim shorts today, including in a sports shop. None to be found, they had girls swimsuits in the sports shop but only adult men's. Ridiculous when as you say people swim year round

CheezePleeze · 08/10/2022 17:25

My local pool sells them so I would've rang ahead and asked if they had his size in stock.

You are much smarter than me. Will definitely do this the next time this inevitably happens.

We had less than a weeks notice for a black swimming costume for school swimming. Could only find them in size 6-7 or smaller...

Carpedimum · 08/10/2022 17:32

I agree @MangosteenSoda & I’ve recently noticed that they they fly off the displays at our local leisure centre, despite being vastly overpriced. Btw, I’ve seen loads of kids in the wetsuit style suits in the pool.

mrsjimhopper · 08/10/2022 17:35

I agree as an adult female looking for a swimming costume anytime other than
May - August is impossible

That’s good to hear because granny was a bit Hmm

I bet the Aldi wetsuit is cheaper than leisure centre swim shorts too.

We are going to Spain in December, so I can deploy it there too!

I'd expect a supermarket to have basic swimwear with school uniform/pe stuff.

BettyOBarley · 08/10/2022 17:42

I've struggled this year to get 8yr old DD a costume online at all, even over the summer, unless I wanted to pay £20+ for one.
The supermarket ones I ordered were all weird fitting and had to go back.

Etinoxaurus · 08/10/2022 17:46

😂 at a wetsuit
I once realised I didn’t have a swimsuit for dd6 en route and grabbed the only thing in her size in the only nearby supermarket.
Inevitably we bumped into the very nice but also poshest richest (Kensington townhouse rich) schoolmum.
I might have overexplained the lime green bikini.

Malfi · 08/10/2022 17:50

I’ve never known a supermarket sell any clothes at all, bar tights and socks, and some basic schoolwear in the late summer.

NoYouSirName · 08/10/2022 17:51

I agree OP! I forgot my cossie and didn’t want or need to spend £40 in a sports shop, just needed to cover myself up to get in the water!! It’s really silly.

Don’t be silly! Most supermarkets have a clothing section?
