Neighbours - what can I do?

Sophieleigh26 · 07/10/2022 10:28

I’m in an end terrace house in a cul de sac. There are small car parks either side of my terrace, the other houses in the road either park on the street or on their driveways.

My front door opens directly into the car park nearest to my house.
I’m H1 (house 1). Me and my partner share a car but he mostly uses it as he works full time and I stay home.

H2 (next to me) have 1 car + guests everyday

H3 (adjacent to me) have 2 cars and a campervan

H4 (next to h3) have 1 car + 1 abandoned car that has been there for 8ish years as it still has a tax disc on. Can’t be moved, registered as sorn

There is 5 spaces in the car park.
No outlined spaces to say who can park where.
AIBU to expect my partner to be able to come home from work and park in the car park where our front door is?

Do you own a space as part of your property?

Whammyyammy · 07/10/2022 10:31

YANBU for wanting to park near your house, but YABU for expecting it.

If you don't own the space outside your house, then anyone can park there.

Bemoreatticus · 07/10/2022 10:32

If the parking is not allocated to each house, I don't think you can do anything about there not being a space left. If each property gets a space then you would usually have an allocated space. It must be frustrating but sadly I don't think you can do anything about it.

BMW6 · 07/10/2022 10:32

As parking spaces are not designated it'll be a free for all so YABU.

Why not get together with all the residents and see if you can designate spaces?

GodspeedJune · 07/10/2022 10:32

If there isn’t allocated parking it’s surely first come, first served? Can see why you’re annoyed with an abandoned car being dumped there though.

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 07/10/2022 10:33

I don't thinks its unreasonable to hope for that out of common courtesy however it is only like parking on a street. It depends on how courteous you all are to each other. if you start asking people to move then it would BU

Partyatno10 · 07/10/2022 10:35

First come first served unfortunately

If the parking is public and not private, how can the neighbours delegate who parks there? Its not their land and living by it doesn't give you automatic rights to it .I could park there if I wanted.

dontputitthere · 07/10/2022 10:42

If they're not designated then yes you are being unreasonable

I guess the veiled question is whether it's fair your neighbours have blocked out one space with an immovable car and another neighbour has two cars and a campervan.

GasPanic · 07/10/2022 10:48

Unless one of the spaces is designated as owned by you, yes YABU.

It would be lovely if everybody in the world behaved in a reasonable way and only took up a reasonable amount of space. Unfortunately that isn't how the world seems to work. You'll always get someone who decides to take the piss and park their 10 cars, screwing over everyone else. Because said person takes the piss like this, they are also likely to be unreasonable in any negotiations, because they clearly don't give a damn about anyone else or else they wouldn't do what they do in the first place.

This is why houses with drives/designated parking cost more money. Because people don't want the hassle of playing musical chairs.

NKFell · 07/10/2022 10:53

Diagram? 😂

It'll be first come first served I would've thought.

girlmom21 · 07/10/2022 10:54

It's going to be closest to all the houses, surely, so yes YABU.

Sophieleigh26 · 07/10/2022 11:41

I rent my house

Yes, the house. You don't rent the road outside/car park.

girlmom21 · 07/10/2022 11:46

What does your rental agreement say about parking?

Sophieleigh26 · 07/10/2022 11:54

@Whammyyammy I was responding to comments about me owning the house

@girlmom21 nothing in the tenancy agreement but on the listing it says 2 parking spaces

OP posts:
HangOnToYourself · 07/10/2022 11:54

Unless there is a parking space included on the rental agreement then YABU and also entitled

Sophieleigh26 · 07/10/2022 11:55

The other people could park outside their house but choose not to, although they do sometimes, will post a diagram when I’m home

You should have clarified this before you signed your contract if it was on the listing but not the tenancy. You should contact the estate agent/landlord for clarification about what is included

HangOnToYourself · 07/10/2022 11:57

Sophieleigh26 · 07/10/2022 11:55

Its irrelevant really unless there is assigned parking

Sophieleigh26 · 07/10/2022 11:58

@HangOnToYourself i didn’t have a partner then and I didn’t have a car (I did have a driving licence just couldn’t afford one) so didn’t think

OP posts:
LuckyLil · 07/10/2022 11:59

Unless you have an allocated space you can't decide which part of the car park you want to park in. However, if the neighbours don't own the car park then they shouldn't have SORN vehicles there as it must be stored off road on their own property. Find out who owns the car park and tell them about the SORN car. They may not have permission to keep it there if they don't own the car park. We had a tenant take the piss like that in our residents parking and the car park belonged to the council who told them they would tow it away if they didn't remove it themselves.

Ok do you still have a copy of the listing? The estate agent/landlord are best placed to advise you, if there were spaces on the listing its possible there is something assigned in the deeds but nobody here will be able.to tell you that

donquixotedelamancha · 07/10/2022 12:01

nothing in the tenancy agreement but on the listing it says 2 parking spaces

You need to discuss this with the landlord. If she has rights over two spaces then they just need marking and to tell the neighbours not to use them.

If not then ask for a reduction as the listing was false, you never know.

Sophieleigh26 · 07/10/2022 12:02

I can’t really draw it but there are 3 parking spaces outside h4 as it’s set further back, the house to the right of it has a driveway too, not to mention there’s a whole other car park. I don’t get why all their guests have to park outside my front door yet my partner has to park in the other road because they moan if we park outside their house.

Neighbours - what can I do?
